The city itself is workaday \u2014 Soviet apartment blocks, a decent market, a river through the middle \u2014 but what surrounds it is some of the best sightseeing in Georgia.\r\n\r\nGelati monastery, founded in 1106 by King David the Builder, is UNESCO-listed and holds mosaics and frescoes spanning several centuries. Bagrati cathedral sits on the hill above the city.\r\n\r\nPrometheus Cave and Sataplia have karst formations and, at Sataplia, preserved dinosaur footprints. Martvili and Okatse canyons are an hour or so away, with walkways bolted to the rock above the water.\r\n\r\nIt is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe and one of the cheapest.
