Everything sits along one main street, Avenida San Martín, and the best trails in Argentine Patagonia start on its edges: Laguna de los Tres under Fitz Roy, Laguna Torre under Cerro Torre, and shorter walks to viewpoints over the valley. No car, no tour and no guide needed.

The village sits at the edge of Los Glaciares National Park, and since 2024 the trails have needed a park ticket for foreign visitors, bought online from Parques Nacionales and checked at the trail entrances. It is the main cost of hiking here. In return you get well-marked paths, campsites inside the park (booked ahead, with a fee), and some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in South America.

Plan on three or four days at least, because the weather decides everything. Laguna Torre is gentler, around 18km return, and ends at a lake with icebergs drifting under Cerro Torre.

For shorter days, Mirador de los Cóndores is a short climb with a view over the whole village, and Loma del Pliegue Tumbado is a long day out to a ridge with both Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre in one view. It was ARS 50,000 from June 2026, and prices change often.
Do I need a guide to hike in El Chaltén? | No. The main trails are well marked and start from the village, so most people hike independently. Guides are useful for glacier trekking, climbing and the more technical routes.
How long is the hike to Laguna de los Tres? | About 24km return and around eight hours. Most of it is moderate, but the final hour climbs steeply up loose rock. Start early, and turn back if the wind picks up.
How many days do you need in El Chaltén? | Three or four, plus a spare day for weather. Fitz Roy is often in cloud, and having a buffer is how you get a clear morning.
When is the best time to visit El Chaltén? | November to March, when the trails, buses and hostels are all running. November and March are quieter.
