The altitude gives it the climate it is famous for: warm days in the mid to high 20s all year, cool evenings, and rain that comes in short afternoon bursts. Thirty years ago it was one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Today it is the place most travellers name as their favourite in Colombia.\r\n\r\nThe change came through public investment in the poorest neighbourhoods: a metro, cable cars and outdoor escalators linking the hillside communities to the city, with libraries, parks and schools built at the stations. Riding the Metrocable and walking Comuna 13 with a local guide is the best way to understand it, and the city's museums tell the harder parts of the story honestly.\r\n\r\nGive Medell\u00edn four or five days.
