Its streets of low houses with brightly painted doors and balconies lead to a main square and a viewpoint over the green valleys. It is one of the most loved stops on the Colombian backpacker trail.\r\n\r\nThe big draw is the Cocora valley, just outside town, where the wax palm, Colombia's national tree, grows up to around 60 metres tall above misty pastures. The loop walk through the valley and cloud forest is one of the best day hikes in the country. The other is coffee: small farms near town offer tours that take you from the plant to the cup.\r\n\r\nGive Salento three days: one for Cocora, one for a coffee farm and the town, and one for Filandia or a ride out to the hot springs. Willys jeeps leave from the main square for the 30-minute ride to the start of the trail. The full loop takes around five to six hours, through cloud forest, across wobbly bridges and up to the farm of Acaime, with its hummingbirds, before coming down through the tallest palms. Several private farms along the route charge small entry fees, so carry cash. Go early for the best light and fewer people.\r\n\r\nTake a coffee farm tour. Several small farms within walking distance of town show you how coffee is grown, picked, processed and roasted, with a tasting at the end.
