In a few weeks you can track mountain gorillas in Bwindi, walk with chimpanzees in Kibale, raft the Nile at Jinja, see tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park and paddle a dugout canoe on Lake Bunyonyi.\r\n\r\nUganda is less polished than Kenya or Tanzania, and that is a big part of its appeal. Parks are quieter, prices are lower and Ugandans are famously friendly. English is an official language and widely spoken, which makes things easier.\r\n\r\nThe flip side is logistics. Roads are slow, public transport is basic, and many travellers hire a car and driver for at least part of the trip. Gorilla and chimp permits are the biggest single cost and sell out in peak season, so book them first and build the route around them.\r\n\r\nKampala, the capital, is a chaotic, likeable city of hills, markets and nightlife, and most trips start nearby at Entebbe airport on Lake Victoria. Buy tickets the day before for early departures.\r\n\r\nMatatus, shared minibuses, leave from Kampala's Old and New Taxi Parks and run everywhere, leaving when full. They are cheap but cramped, and governments advise avoiding them where possible because of poor driving and maintenance.\r\n\r\nBoda bodas, motorbike taxis, are the fastest way around Kampala's traffic, but they are dangerous. The UK reports foreign visitors being mugged on bodas, and accidents are common. If you use one, choose an app-based service such as SafeBoda and wear a helmet. Uber and Bolt cars are a safer option in Kampala.\r\n\r\nFor the national parks, most travellers hire a car with a driver or join a tour, because public transport doesn't reach the parks themselves. Full-day rafting on the Nile costs about US$120 to US$150 including lunch. With one week, pick either the west (chimps and gorillas) or Jinja and Murchison.\r\nWhat is the best time to visit Uganda? | June to September and December to February, the drier seasons, are best for gorilla trekking and safaris. March to May and October to November are rainier, but parks are quieter and some permits are cheaper.\r\nIs Uganda safe for LGBT+ travellers? | It carries serious risk. The Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 imposes life imprisonment for same-sex activity and the death penalty for some \"aggravated\" offences, and LGBT+ people, or those seen as LGBT+, face harassment, blackmail and violence. Many LGBT+ travellers choose not to visit; those who do should be extremely discreet.\r\nHow much does a trip to Uganda cost per day? | Day to day, backpackers spend about \u20ac30 to \u20ac45, covering a dorm or simple room, local food and buses. Permits and activities are the big extras: US$800 for gorillas, US$250 for chimps and around US$120 to US$150 for a day's rafting.\r\nCan I combine Uganda with Rwanda and Kenya? | Yes. The East Africa Tourist Visa (US$100) allows multiple entries to Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya over 90 days. Lake Bunyonyi and Kabale are close to the Rwandan border at Katuna, and buses run from Kampala to Kigali and Nairobi.\r\nShould I use boda bodas in Uganda? | Only if you have to. They are fast but accidents are common, and the UK reports foreign visitors being mugged on them. If you do, use an app such as SafeBoda, wear a helmet and avoid them at night. Uber and Bolt cars are safer in Kampala.\r\nDo I need malaria tablets for Uganda? | Malaria is present throughout Uganda, so most travellers are advised to take antimalarials and use repellent and nets. See a travel clinic at least eight weeks before you go, and ask about the yellow fever vaccine at the same time.","hw_hub_country_cta_title":"Say yes to hostels, meet the world","hw_hub_country_cta_body":"Compare Uganda hostels: live prices, real reviews and free cancellation on most bookings.
