It sits on a long, shallow bay, where traditional dhows with patched sails anchor in the turquoise water and fishermen pull nets on the beach.\r\n\r\nThe town itself is spread out, with a market, a few shops and banks in the centre, and lodges, hostels and restaurants strung along the beach road.\r\n\r\nIts main draw is offshore. The Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, about 10 to 30 km out, protects five islands, including Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina and Bangu\u00e9. The islands have huge white dunes, coral reefs, seagrass beds and lagoons. The park is home to dolphins, turtles, rays, and one of the last populations of dugongs in the western Indian Ocean.\r\n\r\nMost visitors join a day trip by dhow or motorboat to snorkel the reefs, climb the dunes and eat a seafood lunch on the beach. Upmarket lodges on the islands are expensive, so budget travellers base themselves in Vilanculos.\r\n\r\nThe shallow bay and steady winds also make Vilanculos a good spot for kitesurfing, especially from about August to January.\r\n\r\nThree or four nights is enough for an island trip, a kitesurfing lesson and some time on the beach.","hw_hub_city_facts":"Airport transfer | Vilanculos Airport is a few kilometres away\r\nGetting around | Tuk-tuks and taxis\r\nTransport app | None\r\nCurrency | Metical; ATMs in town\r\nTap water | Drink bottled water\r\nTipping | Tip dhow crews and guides\r\nLanguage | Portuguese; English in hostels\r\nHow long to stay | Three to four nights\r\nBest area to stay | The beach road\r\nIsland trips | Check what's included","hw_hub_city_areas_title":"Where to stay in Vilanculos","hw_hub_city_areas_intro":"Stay along the beach road for hostels, lodges and sea views.
