The Indian Ocean here is warm enough to swim all year, from about 21°C in August to about 26°C in February, and that alone makes it a very different trip from Cape Town, where the Atlantic is cold.

The city's Indian community, descended largely from indentured labourers brought over from 1860 to work the sugar plantations, is one of the largest outside India. It's why Durban has bunny chow, spice markets and some of the best curry in the country. Add Zulu culture, a big surf scene and a relaxed beach routine, and the city feels nothing like Johannesburg.

Most backpackers treat Durban as a stop on the coast between the Garden Route and Mozambique or Eswatini, or as a base for the Drakensberg and the game parks of northern KwaZulu-Natal. A good plan is two or three days in the city for the beachfront, a surf lesson, a bunny chow and the markets, then day trips or a night or two further afield.

Be realistic about safety. The CBD and the streets behind the Point have a rough reputation, and the beachfront is busy and fine by day but empties out and gets risky after dark. Travellers usually stay around Florida Road in Morningside, in Glenwood or in Umhlanga, and use Uber to get to the beach. In the water, currents are strong: swim only between the flags where lifeguards are on duty.

Durban is also humid in summer, from about December to March, with heavy afternoon rain. Winter, from June to August, is dry, sunny and around 22°C, which is when the city is at its most pleasant. Walk it or hire a bike, then stop to watch the surfers at the piers.

The water is warm all year and the beach breaks are consistent, so Durban is one of the easiest places in South Africa to learn to surf. Surf schools work from North Beach and the beaches around it, and the shark nets along the main beaches are maintained by the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board. If you want to understand how they work, the Sharks Board has its base in Umhlanga.

uShaka Marine World, at the southern end of the beachfront, has a big aquarium built around a shipwreck theme and the Wet 'n Wild water park next door. The stadium is being refurbished until about 2027, so check that the activities are running before you go.

Then go inland to Indian Durban. If you're up early, a sunrise walk along the promenade is the city at its best, and the fishermen are already out on the piers.

The Durban Botanic Gardens, laid out in 1849 and often called the oldest surviving botanic garden in Africa, are a shady escape from the humidity, with a lake, an orchid house and palms. The Durban Art Gallery and the Natural Science Museum are both in the grand City Hall in the centre; go in daylight and take an Uber door to door.

Up the coast, the promenade at Umhlanga runs along the clifftop past the red-and-white lighthouse. The story usually starts in the 1860s with Indian merchants serving curry in a container you could eat, and it became the working man's lunch. Order a quarter mutton or beans, eat it with your hands, use the plug of bread from the top to mop up the gravy, and tear the sides as you go. Grated carrot, cucumber and tomato come on the side to cool things down. Don't ask for extra chilli.

Everyone has a favourite, which is part of the fun. Gounden's in Umbilo is famous for mutton bunnies, and the queue starts early. The Britannia Hotel, run by the same family since 1983, has around 14 kinds. Cane Cutters in Glenwood is a newer favourite, Patel's Vegetarian Refreshment Room in the centre has served bean bunnies since 1932, and Victory Lounge now has branches in Chatsworth and Umhlanga.

Durban curry is red, oily and hot, and it's worth eating beyond the bunny: mutton, chicken and prawn curries with roti turn up all over the city. At Victoria Street Market you can buy masala mixes to take home, some with names that warn you how hot they are.

Zulu food is the other half of the picture. Shisa nyama, where you choose meat to be grilled over coals and eat it with pap and chakalaka, is as popular here as in Gauteng, especially on weekends.

For sit-down evenings, Florida Road has the biggest choice of restaurants and bars, Glenwood has good independent cafés, and Umhlanga has seafood with sea views at higher prices.
Bunny chow | Quarter mutton is the classic order; eat it with your hands
Gounden's | Umbilo, famous for mutton bunnies; queue early
Britannia Hotel | Family-run since 1983, around 14 bunny varieties
Patel's | Bean bunnies in the city centre since 1932
Victoria Street Market | Spices and masala to take home
Etiquette | Don't ask for extra chilli
Durban's nightlife is relaxed compared with Johannesburg's. Florida Road in Morningside is the main strip, with bars, restaurants and a few clubs along one long road. It's busiest Thursday to Saturday, and you can hop between places on the road itself, then take an Uber home.

Gqom is the city's musical export: a dark, minimal, heavy style of house music that came out of Durban's townships and now gets played around the world. Amapiano is everywhere too. Look for gqom and amapiano nights rather than international chart music, and go with locals or a hostel group if you're heading to township venues.

Beach drinks are a daytime and early-evening thing. The beachfront cafés and bars are good for a cold beer after surfing, and Umhlanga's restaurants and hotel bars are where you go for a quieter evening with a sea view. Prices there are noticeably higher than in Morningside, so it's more of a one-off treat on a hostel budget.

Glenwood has a few relaxed bars and cafés with a younger, local crowd, and it makes a good alternative to Florida Road on a quieter night. Hostels are the easiest way to find out what's on: staff usually know which nights are worth going to and will help organise a group ride.

The rules are the same as anywhere in South Africa. Use Uber or Bolt between neighbourhoods, avoid the CBD and the beachfront on foot after dark, and keep valuables out of sight. Florida Road, Glenwood and Umhlanga are the usual bases.
How do I get from King Shaka airport to Durban? | The airport is about 35 km north, roughly 30 minutes by road. Uber or Bolt costs roughly R300 to R580 (€16 to €31), shared shuttles R250 to R400 per person, and metered taxis from the official rank start at about R500. Many hostels arrange transfers too.
Is it safe to swim in Durban? | Yes, if you swim on lifeguarded beaches between the red and yellow flags. Currents are strong, and the main beaches have shark nets maintained by the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board. Check lifeguard notices, as water quality has closed beaches at times.
Where should I stay in Durban? | Florida Road in Morningside is best for bars and restaurants, Umhlanga for a calm and walkable beach base, and Glenwood for cafés and a local feel. Surfers might prefer the Bluff, south of the harbour.
What is bunny chow and where should I try it? | It's half or a quarter loaf of bread hollowed out and filled with curry, eaten with your hands. Gounden's in Umbilo, the Britannia Hotel and Cane Cutters in Glenwood are popular places to try it. Order a quarter mutton or beans.
How many days do I need in Durban? | Two or three days covers the beachfront, a surf lesson, the markets and plenty of curry. Add more for the Valley of a Thousand Hills, the Drakensberg or iSimangaliso.
When is the best time to visit Durban? | June to August is dry and sunny at around 22°C, with July the sunniest month. February is the hottest, with the warmest sea, but it's humid and wet. December is the busiest and most expensive month.
Can I do the Drakensberg as a day trip from Durban? | Yes, but it's about three hours each way, so it makes a long day. One or two nights in the Berg gives you time for a proper hike.
When is the Durban July? | The Hollywoodbets Durban July takes place on the first Saturday of July at Greyville Racecourse. It's as much a fashion and party event as a horse race.
Say yes to hostels, meet the world
Compare Durban hostels — live prices, real reviews and free cancellation on most bookings.
