This is where you will find banks, cheap hotels and the TGM station at Tunis Marine.

The TGM, a light railway across the lagoon, is the key to the rest. In half an hour it takes you to Carthage, the Phoenician city destroyed by Rome and rebuilt as the capital of Roman Africa, whose ruins are scattered among the villas of a wealthy suburb. Two stops further is Sidi Bou Said, the clifftop village of white walls and blue doors, and at the end of the line is La Marsa, with a beach and some of the city's best bars and restaurants.

West of the centre, the Bardo Museum holds one of the world's finest collections of Roman mosaics.

Tunis is relaxed by North African standards. Touts in the medina are fewer and gentler than in Marrakech, French is widely spoken, and the city is easy to explore on foot and by tram. Bolt costs around 12 to 20 TND but is patchy, and bus 35 goes to Tunis Marine for about 0.5 TND.
How do I get to Carthage and Sidi Bou Said? | Take the TGM light railway from Tunis Marine, at the end of Avenue Habib Bourguiba. Get off at Carthage Hannibal for Byrsa Hill and the museum, and at Sidi Bou Said for the village. A ticket costs about 1 TND.
How many days do you need in Tunis? | Three days is ideal: one for the medina and downtown, one for Carthage and Sidi Bou Said, and one for the Bardo or a day trip to Dougga. Two days is enough for the highlights.
Is Tunis safe? | Yes, for most visitors. Watch for pickpockets in the souks and on the TGM, decline "free rooftop view" offers, and insist on the meter in taxis. Avoid demonstrations, which happen on Avenue Habib Bourguiba.
Where should I stay in Tunis? | The medina has the cheapest beds and the most atmosphere. The Ville Nouvelle is convenient for transport. Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa are calmer and by the sea, 30 minutes from the centre on the TGM.
Is the Bardo Museum open? | The Bardo reopened after its closure from 2021 and is one of the highlights of Tunis. Tickets cost around 10 to 15 TND. Check opening days before you go, as it usually closes one day a week.
How much does a day in Tunis cost? | A shoestring day with a dorm bed, street food, the TGM and one sight costs about €25 to €30. A mid-range day with restaurant meals and guesthouse rooms is closer to €55 to €60.
Can I visit the Zitouna Mosque? | Non-Muslims can usually see the courtyard from a viewing area at set times in the morning, but cannot enter the prayer hall. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered.
How do I get from Tunis to Sousse? | Trains from the main station take about two hours and cost around 10 to 12 TND. Louages from the Moncef Bey station cost about 10 to 14 TND and leave when full.
What is the best time to visit Tunis? | April to June and September to October, when it is warm but not too hot for walking. July and August are hot but good for the beach, and winter is mild but wetter.
Say yes to hostels, meet the world
Compare Tunis hostels: live prices, real reviews and free cancellation on most bookings.
