Under the Aghlabid dynasty in the 9th century AD it became one of the key ports of Islamic North Africa, and the walls, Ribat and Great Mosque of that era still stand. The medina was listed by UNESCO in 1988.

The town has two faces. The medina, a compact old city of white houses and souks inside honey-coloured walls, sits right next to the port and the train line. North of it, along the beach, stretches the resort zone, a long line of hotels, bars and restaurants that runs all the way to the marina of Port El Kantaoui.

For independent travellers, the medina side is the more interesting place to be. You can walk from the train station to the Ribat in five minutes, the Kasbah's museum holds one of the best mosaic collections in the country, and the souks are less touristy than they first look once you get past the main gate.

Sousse is also the best base in central Tunisia. The amphitheatre at El Jem is about an hour south by train, the holy city of Kairouan an hour inland by louage, and Monastir and Mahdia are along the coast on the Métro du Sahel.

Two to three nights is right: a day for the medina and the museum, a day trip to El Jem or Kairouan, and time on the beach.
Airport transfer | Monastir airport is about 20 km away on the Métro du Sahel; Enfidha-Hammamet is about 50 km north, by taxi or shuttle
Getting around | Walk the medina; metered taxis to the beach hotels and Port El Kantaoui
Transport app | Metered yellow taxis; ride-hailing is limited
Tap water | Treated, but most visitors drink bottled
Tipping | Round up in cafés; about 10% in restaurants
Emergency numbers | Police 197, ambulance 190
Language | Tunisian Arabic and French; English in the resort zone
How long to stay | Two to three nights, more with day trips
Best area to stay | Near the medina and the train station
Dress | Cover shoulders and knees in the medina and mosque
Where to stay in Sousse
Stay in or near the medina for history, transport and cheap beds, or along the beach for the sea. Non-Muslims can usually visit the courtyard in the morning, with a small ticket and modest dress, but not the prayer hall.

Walk up through the souks to the Kasbah, at the highest corner of the medina. Its Archaeological Museum is the second-best mosaic collection in Tunisia after the Bardo, with huge Roman floors of sea creatures, gods and hunting scenes from Hadrumetum. Allow at least an hour. Louages cost about 10 to 14 TND and leave when full.
How many days do you need in Sousse? | Two or three nights covers the medina, the museum and the beach, plus a day trip to El Jem or Kairouan. Add a night or two if you want both.
Is Sousse safe? | Yes, for most visitors. Security is heavy in the resort zone since the 2015 attack at Port El Kantaoui. The main day-to-day issues are touts in the medina and taxi drivers who avoid the meter.
How do I get from Sousse to El Jem? | Take the train south towards Sfax; it takes about an hour. The amphitheatre is a short walk from El Jem station and costs 20 TND for foreign visitors.
How do I get from Sousse to Kairouan? | Louages run frequently and take about an hour. Buses also run the route. Kairouan works well as a day trip.
What is the nearest airport to Sousse? | Monastir airport is about 20 km away and has a Métro du Sahel stop. Enfidha-Hammamet airport, used by many charter flights, is about 50 km north, by taxi or shuttle.
Where should I stay in Sousse? | Near the medina and the train station, for history, cheap beds and transport. The resort zone suits beach holidays and nightlife, and Port El Kantaoui is a marina 10 km north.
Is the Sousse medina worth visiting? | Yes. It is a UNESCO site with the Ribat, the Great Mosque and the Kasbah museum, home to one of Tunisia's best mosaic collections. It is compact enough to see in a day.
When is the best time to visit Sousse? | April to June and September to October, when it is warm enough for the beach but comfortable for day trips. July and August are hot and busy, and many resort businesses close in winter.
Is Port El Kantaoui worth visiting? | It is a purpose-built marina and resort, 10 km north of Sousse, with restaurants, boat trips and the bigger clubs. It is pleasant for an evening, but the medina is more interesting for most travellers.
Say yes to hostels, meet the world
Compare Sousse hostels: live prices, real reviews and free cancellation on most bookings.
