It has been inhabited for thousands of years, and in Homer's Odyssey it is often identified as the island of the lotus-eaters. In 2023 UNESCO listed the island for its distinctive pattern of settlement: scattered farmsteads, small fortress-like mosques and villages spread across the countryside.\r\n\r\nDjerba has a mix of cultures found nowhere else in Tunisia. Berber Ibadi Muslims, Arabs and one of the oldest Jewish communities in the Arab world have lived here side by side for centuries, and the El Ghriba synagogue, said to date back more than 2,000 years, is still a place of pilgrimage.\r\n\r\nThe island's capital, Houmt Souk, is a lively market town with whitewashed lanes, covered souks, caf\u00e9s and an old Spanish-Ottoman fort by the sea. A few kilometres south, the village of Erriadh became Djerbahood in 2014, when more than a hundred street artists from around the world painted its walls.\r\n\r\nThe east coast, from Sidi Mahrez to Aghir, is the hotel zone, with long sandy beaches and big resorts. Elsewhere, the island is quiet: olive and palm groves, pottery workshops in Guellala, flamingos on the lagoons and very little traffic.\r\n\r\nThree or four nights is a good stay: a day for Houmt Souk and Djerbahood, a day for the beach, and a day trip to the mainland. The road trip takes most of a day.\r\nHow many days do you need in Djerba? | Three or four nights covers Houmt Souk, Djerbahood, El Ghriba, Guellala and the beach. Add a day for a trip to Matmata or Chenini.\r\nIs Djerba safe? | Yes, for most visitors. There was a fatal attack near the El Ghriba synagogue in 2023, and security there is now very tight. Day to day, the issues are pushy sellers and taxi overcharging. Check the latest advice before travelling near the Libyan border on the mainland.\r\nWhat is Djerbahood? | An open-air street art project in the village of Erriadh. In 2014 more than a hundred artists from over 30 countries painted its walls, and many of the murals remain. It is free to wander.\r\nCan I visit the El Ghriba synagogue? | It is usually open to visitors outside the pilgrimage, with security checks. Dress modestly and cover your head. Check locally before you go, especially around the pilgrimage in spring.\r\nHow do I get around Djerba? | Taxis are cheap and the easiest option. Djerba is flat, so bikes and scooters are great too, and many guesthouses rent them. Local buses exist but are slow.\r\nWhere should I stay in Djerba? | Houmt Souk for the souks, caf\u00e9s and transport; Erriadh for Djerbahood and a quieter village; the east coast for beach resorts.\r\nCan I visit Star Wars locations from Djerba? | Yes. Ajim, where the ferry docks, was used for Mos Eisley scenes, and day trips go to the Hotel Sidi Driss in Matmata and Ksar Ouled Soltane near Tataouine.\r\nWhen is the best time to visit Djerba? | April to June and September to October for warm, sunny weather without the summer crowds. July and August are best for the beach but hot and busy. Winter is mild and good for desert trips.\r\nIs Djerba good for beaches? | Yes. The east coast, from Sidi Mahrez to Aghir, has long stretches of fine sand, with the hotel zone behind. The sea is warmest from July to September.","hw_hub_city_cta_title":"Say yes to hostels, meet the world","hw_hub_city_cta_body":"Compare Djerba hostels: live prices, real reviews and free cancellation on most bookings.
