Mengo was the seat of the Kabaka, the king of Buganda, and his palace and parliament face each other along a royal mile. Namirembe and Rubaga are crowned by the Anglican and Catholic cathedrals, Old Kampala by the vast national mosque, and Nakasero and Kololo by government buildings, embassies and leafy streets.\r\n\r\nDown in the valleys, the city is a crush of traffic, markets and taxi parks, where thousands of white matatus and motorbike taxis jostle for space. It is chaotic and noisy, but also good-humoured, and Ugandans are quick to help a lost visitor.\r\n\r\nKampala is the cultural centre of the Baganda, Uganda's largest ethnic group, and the best sights are tied to their kingdom: the Kasubi Tombs, where four Kabakas are buried in a huge thatched hut listed by UNESCO, and the Lubiri palace in Mengo. The Namugongo shrine, east of the city, honours the Uganda Martyrs and draws huge pilgrimages every June.\r\n\r\nMost travellers stay in Kololo, Kabalagala or nearby, where hostels, restaurants and bars are concentrated, and use Uber, Bolt or a careful boda boda to get around.\r\n\r\nTwo or three nights is enough to see the sights, eat well and enjoy the nightlife, which is some of the best in East Africa. The great thatched tomb, Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, burned down in 2010 and has been rebuilt using traditional methods. Guides explain the customs of the royal court and the women who still tend the site.\r\n\r\nIn Mengo, the Kabaka's Palace (Lubiri) costs about 35,000 UGX and includes a dark history: the underground cells used as torture chambers under Idi Amin. Fixed-price airport taxis cost about 150,000 to 250,000 UGX. Many hostels arrange pick-ups.\r\nHow many days do you need in Kampala? | Two or three nights covers the national mosque, the Kasubi Tombs, the Kabaka's palace, the markets and a night out. Most people then head to Jinja or west to the parks.\r\nIs Kampala safe? | Mostly, with care. Muggings and bag snatches happen, including on boda bodas. Don't walk after dark, carry little cash, use Uber or Bolt at night and avoid demonstrations. The UK warns that terrorist attacks are very likely in Uganda, so avoid large crowds.\r\nAre boda bodas safe in Kampala? | They are the fastest way through traffic but carry real risks of crashes and robbery. If you use one, book through SafeBoda, wear a helmet and don't ride at night. Uber and Bolt cars are safer.\r\nWhere should I stay in Kampala? | Kololo is central, calm and close to restaurants. Kabalagala and Kansanga are best for nightlife. Namirembe and Mengo are near the historic sights.\r\nHow much does the Gaddafi Mosque cost? | About 25,000 UGX for non-Muslim visitors, including a guided tour and the climb up the minaret. Women are lent a headscarf and wrap.\r\nWhat should I eat in Kampala? | Start with a rolex, the chapati and omelette roll sold on every corner. Then try luwombo, matooke with groundnut sauce, muchomo grilled meat and tilapia at Ggaba on Lake Victoria.\r\nHow do I get from Kampala to Jinja? | Buses and matatus take about two to three hours, depending on traffic. Many Jinja rafting companies also offer free pick-ups from Kampala hostels on rafting days.\r\nWhen is the best time to visit Kampala? | June to August and December to February are the driest months. It rains most from March to May and in October and November, but Kampala is warm all year.","hw_hub_city_cta_title":"Say yes to hostels, meet the world","hw_hub_city_cta_body":"Compare Kampala hostels: live prices, real reviews and free cancellation on most bookings.
