The town takes its name from Fort Gerry, a British fort built in the 1890s, and is the capital of the Tooro Kingdom, whose palace sits on a hill above the centre.\r\n\r\nThe town itself is small, tidy and easy-going, with a main street of shops and caf\u00e9s, a busy market and a few colonial buildings. Most visitors use it as a base for what lies around it.\r\n\r\nTo the south, the volcanic landscape is pocked with crater lakes, deep blue or green and ringed with forest and banana plantations. Walking or cycling between them, past villages and tea fields, is one of the best things to do in Uganda, and lodges on the crater rims make lovely places to stay.\r\n\r\nSouth-east of town, Kibale National Park has the highest density of primates in Africa, and its chimpanzee tracking is the best in East Africa. Next to it, the community-run Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is a swamp walk full of monkeys and birds.\r\n\r\nBeyond, the Rwenzori Mountains, the legendary \"Mountains of the Moon\", rise to 5,109 m on the border with DRC, and Queen Elizabeth National Park is a couple of hours to the south.\r\n\r\nThree nights is the minimum: a day for Kibale and Bigodi, a day for the crater lakes, and time for the town, the caves and the palace.","hw_hub_city_facts":"Getting there | Link Bus from Kampala, 40,000 UGX, about 5\u20136 hours via Mubende\r\nGetting around | Walk in town; boda bodas, taxis or bikes for the lakes; matatus to Kibale\r\nTransport app | No reliable ride-hailing; arrange drivers through your lodge\r\nTap water | Not safe; drink bottled water\r\nTipping | Tip Kibale rangers and Bigodi guides\r\nEmergency numbers | 999, or 112 from mobiles\r\nLanguage | English and Rutooro\r\nHow long to stay | Three nights or more\r\nBest area to stay | Town for budget, crater lakes for scenery\r\nCash | ATMs in town only; carry cash to the lakes and parks","hw_hub_city_areas_title":"Where to stay in Fort Portal","hw_hub_city_areas_intro":"Stay in town for cheap rooms and transport, in Boma for quieter lodges, or out on the crater lakes and near Kibale for the scenery. The longer chimp habituation experience lets you spend most of a day with a group.
