It sits on a terrace at 842 m, below the cliffs of the Lalla Setti plateau.

For three centuries it was a capital. The Almoravid ruler Yusuf ibn Tashfin founded the town of Tagrart here in 1082, and from the 13th to the 16th century it was the seat of the Zayyanid kingdom, which merged the older settlement of Agadir with Tagrart and built its palaces inside the Mechouar citadel. The Marinids of Morocco besieged the city and built a rival town, Mansourah, on its western edge.

The Andalusian link runs deep. Tlemcen is known as the capital of Andalusian art in Algeria, and of Arab-Andalusian music in particular, including the hawzi style. Its wedding costume, the chedda, is on UNESCO's list of intangible heritage.

Today it is a university city of around 200,000 people, more relaxed than Oran, and you will meet few foreign tourists. The old centre around the Great Mosque and Place de l'Émir Abdelkader is compact and walkable, and the cable car, waterfalls and caves are a short ride away.

Two or three nights is about right: one day for the centre, one for Mansourah, Sidi Boumediene and Lalla Setti, and a half-day for the El Ourit waterfalls and the Beni Add caves.
Getting there | Flights to Zenata airport (17 km) from Algiers and France; shared taxis from Oran (about 2 hours); night train from Algiers
Getting around | Walk the centre; cheap taxis; cable car to Lalla Setti
Transport app | Heetch has been used for taxis; otherwise hotel-called taxis
Tap water | Drink bottled water
Money | Cash in dinars; cards only in bigger hotels, at the official rate
Emergency numbers | Police 17 or 1548, fire 14, ambulance 1021
Language | Algerian Arabic and French; little English
How long to stay | Two to three nights
Best area to stay | The historic centre, near the Great Mosque
Border | The land border with Morocco is closed
Where to stay in Tlemcen
Tlemcen is small enough to walk. Founded in 1082 and decorated under Ali ibn Yusuf, it is one of the most important Almoravid buildings anywhere: the ribbed dome in front of the mihrab was finished in 1136, and the prayer hall is a forest of horseshoe arches across 13 aisles. The brick minaret was added in 1236 by Yaghmurasen, founder of the Zayyanid dynasty. Entry is free, but non-Muslims cannot go in at prayer times, so dress modestly and come between prayers.

A few minutes' walk south is El Mechouar, the walled citadel of the Zayyanid sultans. One of its palaces was excavated in 2008 and almost completely rebuilt in 2010–2011, so what you see is a reconstruction, but the courtyards, carved wood and tiles give a good idea of court life. A January 2024 visitor reports short guided visits for a tip and a small museum of traditional costume.

On the eastern edge of town, in the village of El Eubbad, the Sidi Boumediene complex is the city's most atmospheric place. It grew around the tomb of Abu Madyan, a Sufi saint from Seville, with a mosque built in 1339 and a madrasa where Ibn Khaldun is said to have taught.

To the west, the ruins of Mansourah are what remains of the town the Marinids built during their siege of Tlemcen. Its mosque was completed in 1301–1302; today only three sides of its 38 m minaret still stand, rising alone above the walls and olive trees. It is a great place at sunset.

Finally, ride the cable car from the Grand Bassin, a 14th-century reservoir, up to the Lalla Setti plateau. The ride takes about five minutes and the views over the city and the plain are the best in Tlemcen. It has some of the finest medieval Islamic monuments in Algeria, from the Almoravid Great Mosque to the Mansourah minaret and the Sidi Boumediene shrine, and very few foreign tourists.
How many days do you need in Tlemcen? | Two or three nights. That covers the centre, Sidi Boumediene, Mansourah and the cable car, plus a half-day for the El Ourit waterfalls and the Beni Add caves.
How do I get from Oran to Tlemcen? | Take a shared taxi from Oran's inter-wilaya taxi station; one traveller paid 500 dinars a seat in 2024 for a journey of about two hours. The SNTF night train from Algiers also stops in Oran on its way to Tlemcen; check times on sntf.dz.
Does Tlemcen have an airport? | Yes. Zenata – Messali El Hadj Airport is about 17 km north-west of the city, with Air Algérie flights from Algiers and flights from France and Belgium, some only in summer.
Is Tlemcen safe? | Tlemcen is calm, and it is outside the areas where the UK advises against travel. The UK still says terrorist attacks in Algeria are likely, especially in rural and mountainous areas, so check the latest advice. Carry your passport for police checkpoints.
Can I cross from Tlemcen into Morocco? | No. The land border between Algeria and Morocco is closed, and the UK says not to try to cross it. You have to fly between the two countries.
Are there hostels in Tlemcen? | Not on Hostelworld. Tlemcen has hotels, from simple places in the centre to three-star chains, which booking sites list from about £29 a night. Hostelworld's only Algerian listings are in Constantine and Ouargla.
How do I get to Lalla Setti? | Take the cable car from the Grand Bassin, which takes about five minutes and cost 50 dinars in 2024, or a taxi up the road. At the top are a park, a lake, cafés and the best views over the city.
Can non-Muslims visit the mosques in Tlemcen? | Visitors can usually enter the Great Mosque and Sidi Boumediene outside prayer times. Dress modestly, cover your shoulders and knees, and take off your shoes.
What is the best time to visit Tlemcen? | April and May, or October and November, when days are warm but not hot.
