And as we all know, where there are students, there are bargains!<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re Seb and Liam, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/meet-the-hostelworld-student-explorers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Hostelworld Student Explorers<\/a> from the University of Nottingham. We\u2019re going to explain exactly why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/findabed.php\/ChosenCity.Nottingham\/ChosenCountry.England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Nottingham<\/a> is an amazing place, not only for students but also for travellers. We\u2019ve been studying here for over five years now, so there\u2019s not much we don\u2019t know about the best things to do, places to eat and nights out in Nottingham that won\u2019t break the bank.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-123667 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Nottingham-on-a-budget.jpg\" alt=\"nottingham on a budget, nottingham town hall with people playing in the water\" width=\"875\" height=\"471\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\ud83d\udcf7\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/users\/kirstiecoolin-3453651\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">@kirstiecoolin<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Free things to do in Nottingham <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are so many amazing places to visit in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/findabed.php\/ChosenCity.Nottingham\/ChosenCountry.England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Nottingham<\/a> on a budget and loads of free things to do too\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Firstly, Nottingham is famous for Robin Hood \u2013 the folklore legend who stole from the rich to give to the poor. We\u2019ve got a historic castle that\u2019s home to a free Robin Hood Museum, plus you can take an award-winning cave tour underneath the castle. It\u2019ll teach you about Nottingham\u2019s fascinating history, taking you down through passageways and tunnels beneath the city.<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re visiting the city in October, one of the best free things to do is to visit Goose Fair. It only happens for one week every year, during which time thousands of visitors flock to this mad funfair to ride the rollercoasters, enjoy the buzzing atmosphere and sample a Nottingham tradition \u2013 mushy peas with mint sauce.<\/li>\n<li>Nottingham is home to hundreds of acres of natural parkland. Firstly, there\u2019s Wollaton Park, a place famous for appearing in one of the Batman movies. There\u2019s loads of green space to escape the city, attracting dog walkers and picnic goers who want to enjoy the scenery and catch a glimpse of one of the hundreds of adorable deer that roam freely in the park. Wollaton Hall offers a free natural history museum which is a must-visit for any<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/backpacking-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\"> backpacker<\/a> who\u2019s saving those pennies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-123666 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Nottingham-on-a-budget-@soberanes.jpg\" alt=\"nottingham on a budget, deer eating grass in Wollaton park\" width=\"875\" height=\"581\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\ud83d\udcf7\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@soberanes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">@soberanes<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nottingham is also home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/attenboroughnaturereserve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Attenborough Nature Centre<\/a>, which is home to hundreds of species of native wildlife so you\u2019d better bring your camera. Hundreds of acres provide the perfect setting for a hike, as you scope out all sorts of native flora and fauna.<\/li>\n<li>The University of Nottingham campus has a beautiful boating lake, where for the small cost of just \u00a35 you can hire a rowing boat and explore with some friends. The views are amazing \u2013 this is one of our favourite things to do in Nottingham on a budget and isn\u2019t to be missed! Afterwards, grab an ice-cream and play outdoor crazy golf at the new course overlooking the lake. It\u2019s only \u00a34 and is great fun! Especially when the weather is on point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Best cheap restaurants in Nottingham <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are loads of places to eat in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/findabed.php\/ChosenCity.Nottingham\/ChosenCountry.England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Nottingham<\/a> on a budget, with plenty of cheap deals helping out us students, and are perfect for backpackers too!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A firm Nottingham favourite is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bunkwings.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Bunk<\/a>, with five locations around the city. It\u2019s famous for its mega range of chicken wings and cocktails. Happy hour is every day outside the hours of 7-10pm, during which time cocktails are \u00a34.50 and all chicken wings are half price. You won\u2019t find a much better deal than that!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-123669 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Nottingham-on-a-budget-@annabelusher-691x875.jpg\" alt=\"nottingham on a budget, chips and fried chicken \" width=\"691\" height=\"875\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\ud83d\udcf7<em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/annabelusher\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">@annabelusher<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ozsportsbar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Oz Bar<\/a> is a perfect place to save some pennies (but not calories). Students are entitled to 50% off their food bill at any time \u2013 yes you did read that right \u2013 so if you don\u2019t have a student card you better start making some friends pronto! The food is based around an Australian theme, with large burgers, fries, chicken wings etc. On Fridays everyone gets 50% off drinks. You can get a pint for under \u00a32 &#8211; the cheapest in Nottingham!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FaradaysNottingham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Faradays<\/a> in the Hockley neighbourhood is another great spot for a budget-friendly munch. For just \u00a38 they offer a pizza and drink deal with home-made, stone baked, delicious pizzas. Hockley is home to many independent restaurants and places to eat, ranging from high price Michelin star restaurants through to low budget.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mowglistreetfood.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Mowgli<\/a> is another banging place to eat in Hockley. It&#8217;s Indian street food that&#8217;s not only affordable, but delicious. The restaurant is just as Instagrammable as the food itself, as the seats are literally swings!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-123672 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Nottingham-on-a-budget-@hopewarrenx-664x875.jpg\" alt=\"nottingham on a budget, plates of food with wraps and potatoes \" width=\"664\" height=\"875\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\ud83d\udcf7\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hopewarrenx\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">@hopewarrenx<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Nottingham nightlife<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Nottingham is famous for its nightlife. There\u2019s a night out tailored for everyone \u2013 whether your jam is reggae, house or drum and bass.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The most popular night of the week is at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rock-city.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Rock City<\/a> on a Wednesday. The night plays chart music but is a sell out every week \u2013 definitely worth a visit when you\u2019re in the city. The venue also hosts concerts and gigs, so it&#8217;s worth having a look on their website if you\u2019re in Nottingham and fancy something a bit different.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-123712 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Nottingham-on-a-budget-2.jpg\" alt=\"nottingham on a budget, crowd of people at rock city nottingham with confetti\" width=\"875\" height=\"583\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\ud83d\udcf7\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rockcitynottingham\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">@rockcitynottingham<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iloveocean.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Ocean<\/a> is technically a student-only club, but as long as you\u2019re friendly on the door they normally let non-students in. Its music is primarily cheese (we all love it from time to time) and it\u2019s famous for Baywatch \u2013 at 1am every night that the club is open, the theme tune from Baywatch plays and everyone swings their tops above their heads. A mad tradition that all the students love!<\/li>\n<li>Alongside the many clubs in Nottingham, there are hundreds of bars and pubs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greeneking-pubs.co.uk\/pubs\/nottinghamshire\/ye-olde-trip-to-jerusalem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Ye Old Trip to Jerusalem<\/a> is the UK\u2019s oldest pub dating back to 1189AD. It\u2019s situated in the cliffs next to the castle and is a great place to go for a traditional pint. They offer cheap drinks and food which you can enjoy in a historic setting.<\/li>\n<li>Bar crawls are typically started in Hockley, with so many bars in close proximity. Baa Bar is a classic destination &#8211; with its scientific cocktails and array of flavoured shots, it\u2019s easy for things to get messy fast! Entry is free and there\u2019s a large dancefloor for boogying on a budget.<\/li>\n<li>Many bars in Nottingham have amazing happy hours where you can get 2 for 1 cocktails before 10pm, including <a href=\"http:\/\/thehockleyartsclub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Hockley Arts Club<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slugandlettuce.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Slug and Lettuce<\/a> and Coco Tang. Coco Tang is a popular choice, an underground cocktail bar with a Hong Kong theme and neon lights galore.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Where to stay in Nottingham<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With an incredibly efficient public transport system, the whole of Nottingham is so well connected that you\u2019ll never be too far out wherever you stay. The majority of students live in Lenton, an area between the city centre and The University of Nottingham, so expect low prices and plenty of bargains to be found around here. The city centre is home to most students studying at Nottingham Trent University, plus lots of young professionals.
