London is one of the most famous destinations and is on many travellers’ bucket lists, but if you’re a Harry Potter fan like me, this city has an even more magical touch. Every Potter fan<\/em> wants to visit the land of the Queen and realise their dream.<\/p>\n

When I was planning my itinerary, I made a list of Harry Potter related places that I wanted to see. However, as my travel budget is tight and I can’t go to the famous Warner Studios, I looked for places I could visit for free or for as little money as possible.<\/p>\n

The result is this list, which I am now sharing with you: 10 amazing places that will make you feel totally in the Harry Potter universe. Shall we check them out?<\/p>\n

1. The 9\u00be” platform<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Our first stop is King’s Cross station, where platform 9\u00be is located. For anyone who has ever dreamed of visiting Hogwarts, this place is at the top of the list. When you arrive at King’s Cross, you will find the platform. The station is not very big and you will be able to find it easily as it always has a long queue.<\/p>\n

There is a team that organises the queue and takes the photos. When it’s your turn, you can choose your Hogwarts house scarf (mine is Slytherin, of course!) and your wand to take a photo. The team will tell you what poses and movements you can do to make the photo look good. At the end, you can buy the photo for \u00a39 in the official shop next to the platform. Realistically, it’s not cheap, and if you don’t want to spend that much money, you can give someone your mobile phone to take your photo. The people in the queue are always helpful and almost everyone does the same, so you can have a memento of this magical moment without having to pay for it.<\/p>\n

If you don’t feel like queuing, you can also visit the station in the evening. However, the shop is then closed and there are only the signs to the platform and the luggage trolley. You can take advantage of the fact that no one is there to take photos, but the accessories such as wands, owls and scarves are only available during the day. Still, it’s a magical souvenir!<\/p>\n

2. Leadenhall Market<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

on the way to Diagon Alley? Our next stop is Leadenhall Market, a place with several shops that was used for the filming of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”. The architecture is simply breathtaking, in Victorian style. You are immersed in the art and history of the place, after all, it is one of the oldest markets in London!<\/p>\n

If you want to find the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron, you should know that the door is now painted blue and there is a visual. It’s not uncommon to see tourists trying to find the brick wall as you walk past, I’ve even tried it myself!<\/p>\n

Unfortunately I didn’t find a broom shop or an owl shop, just muggle shops<\/em> and restaurants with no butterbeer. Still, it was worth a visit and it’s quite easy to get there. You just have to get off at Leicester Square station and turn left into Charing Cross Street.<\/p>\n

3. Tower Bridge<\/h2>\n

Tower Bridge is undoubtedly one of the landmarks of London and Harry Potter. In the scene “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”, Harry flies over it as he flies over the Thames.<\/p>\n

Note that Tower Bridge and London Bridge are not the same, so don’t confuse one with the other. Tower Bridge is to the east and is much more beautiful in my opinion. By the way, a tip: the view is even more beautiful at sunset! To get there, you can get off at London Bridge or Tower Hill underground stations.<\/p>\n

4. Millennium Bridge<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Speaking of bridges, another bridge that should also be on your list is the Millennium Bridge, which appears in the first scene of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. If you’re a Potter fan<\/em>, you might remember that it was destroyed during the Death Eater attack.<\/p>\n

Seeing this bridge and remembering that scene is simply spine-chilling, so be sure to walk across it on your visit to London, enjoy the view and relive the excitement in the books and in the cinemas. The Millennium Bridge is located near Mansion House tube station (Circle and District Line).<\/p>\n

5. Westminster tube station<\/h2>\n

Westminster tube station is close to several tourist attractions such as the London Eye and Big Ben. Scenes from “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” were filmed here when Harry and Mr Weasley were on their way to the Ministry of Magic.<\/p>\n

You’re sure to pass this station because it’s so well located, and of course you’ll remember our wizard.<\/p>\n

6. Piccadilly Circus<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Piccadilly Circus is one of the busiest areas of London, constantly bustling with tourists and crowds of people. There are several shops here, as it is a large shopping centre, and the nightlife is also usually very lively.<\/p>\n

The scene in which Hermione, Ron and Harry flee from Ron’s brother’s wedding while being chased by Death Eaters is set in Piccadilly Circus. Incidentally, our wizard was almost run over by a double-decker bus in this scene, remember?<\/p>\n

A walk through Piccaddilly Circus is very exciting. The area is beautiful and very lively. Needless to say, you should definitely stop there, right? You can reach it by getting off at the tube station of the same name.<\/p>\n

7. Trafalgar Square<\/h2>\n

Trafalgar Square is a very special place, as it hosted the premiere party<\/em> for the final film in the saga on 7 July 2011 (a date that will always be important). A stage was set up for the actors to perform in front of the eagerly awaiting crowd.<\/p>\n

After leaving the square, the actors and J.K. Rowling made their way to Leicester Square where the film was screened. Trafalgar Square also features in the scene with the Death Eaters in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which I quoted<\/em>in the Millennium Bridge<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The square is amazing and full of life. Day or night, it’s always full of people admiring it. It’s only 400 metres from Picaddilly Circus, so you can reach it on foot. However, if you prefer to take the tube, you should get off at Charing Cross station, which is also close to Diagon Alley.<\/p>\n

8. Gringotts Bank<\/h2>\n

do you remember Gringotts Bank? The bank used in the wizarding world and run by goblins is located near Diagon Alley. In the first and last films of the saga, we can see its gold coins and vaults in detail.<\/p>\n

The building that served as inspiration for the fa\u00e7ade of Gringotts Bank is actually part of the South African embassy. The details and architecture of the building were used by the film’s designers as a sketch for the Bank of the Wizarding World.<\/p>\n

You can see the building if you go to Leadenhall Market, as it is very close by. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to enter it, but it costs you nothing to look at the fa\u00e7ade, which is really beautiful – take a look and take a photo!<\/p>\n

9. St Pancras Renaissance Hotel<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Close to King’s Cross is London’s most famous hotel, the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel. The fa\u00e7ade of the building was used in the film “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” as the entrance to King’s Cross station in the scene where Ron and Harry park the flying car.<\/p>\n

The hotel with its beautiful architecture was opened in 1873, but was renovated again in 2011. As well as Harry Potter, this location was also used for the Netflix series The Crown<\/em> and for the films Bridget Jones’s Diary<\/em> and Batman Begins<\/em>. And if you’re over 25, you may remember the Spice Girls’ video ‘Wannabe’, which was also filmed at the hotel. When you leave King’s Cross station, don’t forget to stop outside the hotel.<\/p>\n

10. Grimmauld Place<\/h2>\n

The house where Sirius Blake grew up and which served as the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix when he went to Azkaban is also close to King Cross station. Number 12 is not visible to Muggles<\/em>. The address to look for on the map is 23-29 Claremont Square in Islington.<\/p>\n

The houses in this neighbourhood are all Georgian in style and really resemble the universe Rowling created. Not only does it feel like you’re immersed in the world of HP, but you can also see these small houses and walk around the neighbourhood to experience London life away from the big tourist attractions. To get to Claremont Square, you can get off at Angel (Zone 1) or King’s Cross (Zone 1) tube stations.<\/p>\n

Further tips<\/h2>\n

In London there is a “Harry Potter Free Tour”, a walking tour that you can take with a guide. As the name suggests, you don’t have to pay anything, just make a reservation on the website. At the end of the tour you can make a voluntary contribution – but always appreciate the work of the guides!<\/p>\n

The guide speaks English and visits several of the places I’ve mentioned here. This is a good option if you want a guided tour to learn about Harry Potter and meet other wizarding fans like us.<\/p>\n

Best time to visit London<\/h2>\n

London is a very touristy city all year round, so it doesn’t matter what month you choose to visit, it will always be packed. The best time to visit London is in the spring, between March and June, as it’s not as cold and admission prices are still a little cheaper.<\/p>\n

Where to stay in London<\/h2>\n

Palmers Lodge <\/em><\/p>\n

You can immerse yourself even more in the magic of Harry Potter by staying in a Victorian-style lodge. Palmers Lodge<\/a> is unofficially known as the “lovely old mansion”, but rest assured that the facilities are in very good condition. The entire building is rustic in style, has a cosy atmosphere and is only 200 metres from Finchley Road tube station, from where you can easily reach the London Eye (20 minutes) or Buckingham Palace (10 minutes).<\/p>\n

TheAstorHyde Park<\/a> is also Victorian in style and combines traditional d\u00e9cor with modern facilities. The hostel is very welcoming and has a great location close to Hyde Park and the Natural History Museum. The location is also very good. You can walk to many places, there are several bus stops nearby and Gloucester Road tube station is only 10 minutes away. There are also several bars that you can use.<\/p>\n
