That’s exactly what the Princes Islands offer, the largest and most popular of which is Büyükada. It’s a complete change of pace, giving you a peaceful escape just a ferry ride away.

Why it’s great for solo travellers: it’s very safe and easy to get around. You can explore at your own pace without feeling rushed. Plus, the ferry ride itself is a mini-cruise on the Sea of Marmara and offers nice views back towards Istanbul.

What to do:

Explore Büyükada: When you get off the ferry, you’ll notice right away that there are no cars. Horse-drawn carriages used to be the main mode of transport, but now electric vehicles are the norm here.

Take a ride around the area on a bicycle: Rent a bike near the ferry port and ride through the charming streets lined with beautiful wooden houses. It’s a fantastic way to see the island’s hidden spots and get some exercise.

Slappna av på plattan: In the warmer months, there are several small beaches where you can swim.

Take a hike to St. George’s (Aya Yorgi Church) on the highest point of the island. If you want to get a spectacular panoramic view, take a hike to the Greek Orthodox Monastery of St. George. There is a nice café there for a well-deserved rest.

Enjoy a fish sandwich: There are plenty of restaurants on the waterfront where you can enjoy fresh seafood.

How to get there:

Ferry: This is the classic and best way. Pamukkale och Hierapolis (Cotton Castle och Ancient City)

Pamukkale, which means “cotton castle” in Turkish, is famous for its stunning white travertine terraces filled with mineral-rich hot springs. Next to it lies the ancient Roman city of Hierapolis with its impressive ruins.

Why it’s great for solo travellers: It offers amazing photo opportunities and a unique natural experience. Exploring the ancient city of Hierapolis is also an immersive journey into history.

What to do:

Travertine Walk: Lace up your shoes and walk barefoot on the warm, mineral-rich terraces. The water is believed to have healing properties.

Swim in Cleopatra’s Pool: In this ancient thermal pool, surrounded by fallen Roman columns, you can enjoy a unique swimming experience (there’s an extra charge).

Explore Hierapolis: Walk through the extensive ruins of this ancient city, including a well-preserved theatre, necropolis (ancient cemetery) and Roman baths.

How to get there (and why it’s challenging for a day trip):

It’s the most financially viable option, but the drive is long. Buses from Istanbul to Denizli (the closest town to Pamukkale) run for about 10-12 hours overnight. From Denizli, it’s a short dolmus ride to Pamukkale. Doing this as a day trip means a grueling 20-24 hours on the bus, which is not practical.

Låt: The only realistic way to visit Pamukkale as a day trip from Istanbul is to fly. You would have to fly very early in the morning from Istanbul to Denizli (DNZ) and late in the evening back. From Denizli airport, you can take a shuttle or taxi (about an hour) to Pamukkale.

Cost: Air tickets can be expensive, especially if booked at the last minute. If you add airport transfers and entrance fees, the amount adds up quickly.

Time: Even with flights, you’re looking at a very long day, probably 16-18 hours door to door, with only a few hours on site.

Solo/budget tip: If Pamukkale is a must-stop, seriously consider making it an overnight stop. Stay in a guesthouse in Pamukkale village, enjoy the sunset over the travertine and explore at a more leisurely pace. This also makes it much more financially viable, as you’ll avoid expensive flights. Many travelers combine Pamukkale with Ephesus for a 2-3 day trip.

Photo av Jennifer Martin

6. It’s a vast site, so you can spend hours exploring it at your own pace and soaking up the history.

What to do:

Library of Celsus: Celsus: The iconic two-story façade is a masterpiece of Roman architecture and a must-see.

Mycket vacker theatre: A huge amphitheater with a capacity of 25,000 spectators that is still used for concerts today.

Curetes Street: the main marble street, lined with ancient columns, statues and public buildings.

Terrace Houses: these well-preserved Roman houses provide a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of wealthy Ephesians (you need to pay for a ticket, but it’s worth it).

Temple of Artemis: One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, although only a single column of it remains today.

How to get there (and why it’s tricky for a day trip):

Similar to Pamukkale, the only practical way to attempt a day trip to Ephesus is to fly from Istanbul to Izmir (ADB). From Izmir airport, you can take a train or bus to Selçuk (the town closest to Ephesus), which takes about an hour. Then a short dolmus ride will take you to the ruins.

Cost.

Time: Again a very long day, probably 16-18 hours, with limited time on site.

Tips for individuals/groups: Ephesus is best visited as part of a multi-day trip, often in combination with Pamukkale. Affordable accommodation can be found in Selçuk or Kuşadası. If you’re short on time but want convenience, consider an organized day trip from Izmir.

Can you really take a day trip to Cappadocia from Istanbul? The land of fairy chimneys, hot air balloons and cave dwellings. It’s probably high on your Turkey bucket list for good reason – it’s absolutely magical. But can you visit it as a day trip from Istanbul?

Short answer: It is, however, a rushed, exhausting and expensive experience that most budget-conscious solo travellers would want to avoid.

Here’s why:

Distance: Cappadocia is located in central Turkey, a considerable distance from Istanbul.

Travel Time: Even by air, you’re looking at about 1.5 hours in the air to Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV), plus travel time to and from the airport, and then another hour from the airport to major cities like Göreme or Uchisar.

Cost: The biggest cost is the flights. If you want to do a day trip, you need the earliest morning flight out and the latest evening flight back. You would probably also need to book a private tour or very efficient transfers to make the most of your limited time, which adds significantly to the cost.

Experience: a real trip to Cappadocia involves waking up before dawn for a hot air balloon flight (weather permitting), exploring the unique valleys, visiting the cave churches and soaking up the surreal landscapes. If you try to squeeze it all into one day, you’ll miss out on the magic, especially the sunrise balloon flights.

Strong recommendation: if Cappadocia is on your bucket list, plan at least 2-3 days for it. This will allow you to:

Experience a hot air balloon flight (often cancelled due to weather, so second chances are very important).

Explore open-air museums and ancient cave churches.

Hike through breathtaking valleys (such as the Valley of the Roses or Pigeon Valley).

Enjoy the unique cave hotels.

See the famous fairy chimneys up close.

It’s a fantastic experience, but not a true “day trip” for backpackers looking for a relaxing and affordable getaway. Save it for a dedicated part of your itinerary in Turkey!

Photo: Anna Berdnik

     Book Hostels in Istanbul

Planning an epic day trip from Istanbul

You have a few ideas in your head. Now let’s talk about how to make a day trip from Istanbul smooth and stress-free.

Transportation options

Getting around Turkey is surprisingly easy and affordable, especially if you’re comfortable using public transport.

Bus: Turkey has an extensive and efficient bus network. For longer distances, such as to Bursa, Edirne or even Denizli to Pamukkale, intercity buses are the best option. They are comfortable, often have Wi-Fi and are very reasonably priced. The main bus terminals in Istanbul include Esenler Otogar for destinations on the European side and Alibeyköy Otogar.

Ferries: ferries are a fantastic option for trips to the coast or islands such as the Princes’ Islands or Bursa. Companies like IDO and BUDO provide fast and regular services. They are sightseeing and help you avoid traffic. You can often use your Istanbulkart for local ferries.

Trains: although Turkey has an expanding high-speed rail network, it is not always the most convenient for day trips from Istanbul to popular tourist spots. Buses and ferries often provide more direct routes.

Flights: For destinations such as Pamukkale, Ephesus or Cappadocia, flights are the only viable option for a day trip, but they can become more expensive and faster. For longer trips within Turkey, flights are a great way to save time.

Organized trips: If you want convenience and don’t mind spending a little more or meeting other travelers, organized day trips can be a good option. They can handle all the details and transportation, but you’ll have less flexibility. For a better experience, look for tours that are designed for smaller groups.

Setting an adventure budget

For travelers on a budget, every penny counts. Det är inte bara en fråga om tid, det är också en fråga om pengar:

Transport: Public transport such as buses, ferries and local dolmuses are always cheaper than taxis or private transfers.

Food: Eat like the locals. Street food, local restaurants and markets provide tasty and affordable meals. Be sure to pack snacks and water from the supermarket before you go.

Admission: Don’t forget about entrance fees to museums, ancient monuments or specific attractions such as Cleopatra’s Pool in Pamukkale or the terrace houses in Ephesus. Some places offer student discounts if you have an international student card.

Ungdomar: Set a budget for souvenirs and stick to it. At the bazaars politely pluck, but know when to leave.

Photo: Ibrahim Uzun

     Book Hostels in Istanbul

What to pack (besides the essentials)

Comfortable shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking, especially around the ancient sites or on the islands.

Water bottle: Refill your water bottle whenever possible.

Snacks: Bring snacks for long journeys or while exploring.

Power bank: Keep your phone charged for maps, photos, and in case of emergencies.

Sunscreen and hat: the Turkish sun can be intense even outside of summer.

Layers: the weather can change, especially in mountainous areas or by the sea.

Swimwear: If you are going to the Princes’ Islands, Şile or the hot springs in Pamukkale.

Small backpack.

Tips for safety and solo travel

Turkey is generally safe for solo travelers, but a few sound pieces of advice can help:

Share your travel plan: let a friend or family member know your plans and when you expect to return.

Make sure you have valuable belongings: Use a money belt or secure cross-body bag. In crowded areas, be aware of your surroundings.

Learn basic Turkish phrases: “Merhaba” (hello), “Teşekkür ederim” (thank you), “Lütfen” (please), “Ne kadar?” (how much?) are very important and appreciated.

Trust your inner self: If a situation doesn’t seem right to you, it probably is. Remove yourself from it.

Stay in touch: Consider getting a local SIM card for data, especially for maps and emergencies.

Aside from day trips: what countries to visit from Istanbul?

Many people ask: “What countries can I visit from Istanbul?” Although this article focuses on day trips within Turkey, Istanbul is also a great travel hub for exploring other countries.

Thanks to its strategic location and the huge Istanbul International Airport (IST), you can easily catch flights to many destinations in Europe, Asia and Africa. So while you won’t be making day trips to another country, Istanbul serves as a fantastic base from which to embark on longer adventures to places like Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Azerbaijan and more. Just remember that you’ll need a passport, a possible visa, and a bit more time than just a day for these trips.

Are you ready for your next Turkish adventure?

Ta till you should. Istanbul is an amazing city, but Turkey offers so much more just a short drive away. From the tranquil Princes’ Islands to the historic sights of Bursa and Edirne or the unique natural wonders of Pamukkale, incredible experiences await every solo traveller and tourist.

These day trips from Istanbul are a great way to diversify your travel experience, get to know the locals and create unforgettable memories without breaking the bank.
