We asked free-<a href=\"http:\/\/www.luisalkmim.com\/\" class=\"post links\">runner Luis Alkmim<\/a>, the superhero behind our hair-raising Lisbon video, to share some of his secrets on how to get a unique perspective on Lisbon\u2026<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpbf-responsive-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Parkour in Portugal with Luis Alkmim | Hostelworld\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y2ExT1pZE9Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h2><strong> Find a local parkour buddy<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/r7Njp8h.jpg\" alt=\"Parkour buddy Lisbon\" width=\"1400\" height=\"933\" \/><br \/>\nThis really is the best way to get off the beaten track and find the coolest parkour spots in a new city. To connect with Lisbon\u2019s thriving parkour community, join the Facebook group &#8220;Quem vai treinar Parkour?&#8221; and you\u2019ll find people down for some street time almost any day of the week. Most people speak English well, and because the community is so active, the locals are used to seeing people playing super heroes on the streets.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h2><strong> Take your sightseeing to the next level<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/IPEvY7m.jpg\" alt=\"Lisbon sightseeing parkour\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1050\" \/><br \/>\nVisiting one of Lisbon\u2019s many viewing points, or \u201cmiradouros\u201d, is guaranteed to make you fall in love with the city. But sometimes you can get an even better view by getting away from the crowds. The <em>Miradouro de Santa Luzia<\/em>, for instance, has two \u201cofficial\u201d viewing areas. But you can easily &#8220;wall run&#8221; to find higher, more unique views over the city. Just don\u2019t go trying out any crazy new moves up there \u2013 save those for the square nearby, where there are challenges for all abilities, and grass in case you need a soft landing.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h2><strong> Make the most of Lisbon\u2019s architectural diversity<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/JeUT8i2.jpg\" alt=\"Lisbon parkour belem tower\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1050\" \/><br \/>\nWhat makes Lisbon so great for free runners is the huge range of architecture and parkour challenges: while areas such as <em>Alfama, Baixa <\/em>and<em> Chiado <\/em>look like you are inside a colourful history book, you\u2019ll find skyscrapers and modern architecture on the other side of the city, particularly around <em>Parque das Na\u00e7\u00f5es<\/em>. This park is actually one of my favourite places to free run \u2013 it includes an awesome open-air skate park under the Vasco da Gama Bridge, and features walls and jumps of every kind.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h2><strong> The suburbs are a free-runner\u2019s dream <\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/FMlnM3E.jpg\" alt=\"Lisbon Parkour\" width=\"1400\" height=\"931\" \/><br \/>\nIf you\u2019re a shy beginner, why not head to the outskirts where there\u2019s fewer people and more room to experiment? Take a bus, tram or train from the centre to <em>Alg\u00e9s<\/em>, which is arguably the best neighbourhood in the world for parkour. The main spots here are <em>Kaos<\/em> with its grey walls and urban energy, <em>Horta<\/em> which looks like a maze of jump possibilities and the <em>Cubes<\/em> that are a dream come true for parkour athletes. Make sure you visit the nearby B\u00e9lem Tower (pictured) which is no hidden gem, but makes for an amazing backdrop.<br \/>\nOther good places to get the metro to from the city centre include <em>Telheiras, Pontinha, Alto dos Moinhos<\/em> and <em>Cidade Universit\u00e1ria<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<h2><strong> Stay cool!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/bb6o6tS.jpg\" alt=\"Lisbon parkour moves\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1400\" \/><br \/>\nIf you\u2019re in Lisbon at the height of summer, it\u2019ll be too hot to do much parkour in the city centre. If you want to stay local, take a walk along the river from Terreiro do Pa\u00e7o to Cais do Sodr\u00e9. You\u2019ll find sandy riverside spots perfect for practising your moves safely, grassy banks on different levels, big rocks, and plenty of jumpable walls that are great for practising the classic \u201ccat pass\u201d move. You can work up a sweat, then jump straight into the river to cool down.<br \/>\nIf you have a bit more time on your hands, why not get out of the city and head to the beach? You can catch the train from Cais do Sodr\u00e9 \u2013 one of my favourite routes is to get off at Santo Amaro de Oeiras and jump\/run your way along the coast to Carcavelos. Getting the train to Estoril is also a great option \u2013 the coastal route to Cascais features parkour-friendly obstacles from the moment you get off the train. And if you like to hike up mountains, swing through forests, flow like water onto rocks, and explore mysterious castles, then Sintra might become your favourite place in the world.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>\n<h2><strong> Beware the siren call of Lisbon\u2019s rooftops<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/CfeE59W.jpg\" alt=\"Lisbon rooftops parkour\" width=\"1400\" height=\"993\" \/><br \/>\nWith so many accessible, closely-spaced buildings \u2013 Lisbon\u2019s rooftops look like a free-runner\u2019s paradise. Although you may be tempted to dive straight into this orange heaven, extreme caution is needed: most Portuguese rooftops are very fragile! Each one of these handmade tiles are ceramic and will not support your body weight.<br \/>\nIt is still possible to explore Lisbon\u2019s alluring rooftops, but you\u2019ll need to be careful, and make use of local knowledge: get in contact with a local parkour buddy (see tip #1) who will be able to guide you to the safe rooftop adventures the city has to offer.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>\n<h2><strong>Don\u2019t let Lisbon rain on your parkour parade<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/DvYWPtg.jpg\" alt=\"Spot real parkour Lisbon\" width=\"1400\" height=\"920\" \/><br \/>\nIf you&#8217;re unlucky enough to catch Lisbon on a rainy day, head to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SPOTREAL\" class=\"post links\"> Spot Real<\/a>, a recently opened Parkour Academy a few kilometres from the city centre. Alternatively there are some free indoor spots that are worth exploring in Miraflores, Avenida da Liberdade and Olaias.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<em>Ready to start your own Lisbon adventure?
