We get asked all the time for recommendations and tips for different places around the world. Hong Kong is one of the greatest cities on earth and full of wonderful surprises. Apart from things like visiting Ocean Park, shopping in Tsim Sha Tsui, or eating in the Jumbo restaurant, what else is there to do you ask?! Well our resident Hong Kong<\/a> expert Ashley\u00a0<\/a>has put together a list of\u00a010 things the locals love doing…<\/p>\n

1. Visit the artistic ‘West Kowloon Cultural District’<\/h2>\n

This brand new cultural quarter is the latest hot\u00a0spot for locals. Not only are\u00a0there large green spaces for picnics, but you can immerse yourself in the cultural comings and goings of the city with incredible events going on every month. “Freespace Happening” is a great example, with\u00a0live music performances, DIY workshops, dance showcases, craft\u00a0markets, etc. There’s a ton to do for people with all sorts\u00a0of interests, so\u00a0you’ll surely find something you love!
\nOn top of all that, make sure to enjoy the beautiful harbour view taking a stroll\u00a0along the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade!

2. Shop at the trendy ‘Causeway Bay’<\/h2>\n

I know, I know, malls and shopping aren’t exactly top of most backpackers’ to-do list, but when in Rome… (or Hong Kong). Forget about Tsim Sha Tsui – this is the best area for shopping. There\u2019s a great\u00a0mix of malls and local shops, and if you\u2019re looking for independent stores, Island Beverley Shopping Centre, East Point Centre or World Trade Centre are where it’s at. For\u00a0brand names, check out SOGO and Times Square.\u00a0Also, definitely check out\u00a0the newest\u00a0mall: Hysan Place! You’ll find\u00a0popular international fashion brands, the Eslite Bookstore, and scrumptious food.<\/p>\n

3. Have lunch in ‘Cha Chaan Teng’<\/h2>\n

\u2018Cha Chaan Teng\u2019 (meaning tea restaurants) are the Hong Kong-style food joints\u00a0that serve yummy\u00a0eats\u00a0such as pineapple buns, egg tarts, instant noodles in tomato soup, HK-style French toast, and milk teas.\u00a0Most of the tourists will go for Tsui Wah Restaurant, but if you’re looking for something more authentic, places like\u00a0Capital Cafe, Australia Dairy Company and Kam Kee Cafe are the better!<\/p>\n

4. Meet the creatives at ‘PMQ’<\/h2>\n

PMQ\u00a0is like a co-working gathering space for designers, artists and creatives. There are many concept stores selling fashion items and unique artsy\u00a0products.\u00a0You\u2019ll find lots of cool-looking\u00a0cafes and restaurants inside and\u00a0around the area, so you can have a cup of coffee and chill\u00a0for the afternoon.\u00a0There’s always something going on, such as the amazing food celebrations, wine tasting festivals or night markets. 5. Enjoy the iconic view of the Victoria Harbour<\/h2>\n

Although it is a very famous tourist spot, it’s popular\u00a0for a reason! Even locals go there sometimes, just to walk down the promenade and enjoy the view.\u00a0On the way, you’ll be able to walk by the Clock Tower, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Avenue of Stars, etc.
\nTop Tip: The view is even better if you go at night, plus there is\u00a0a laser light & music show – \u2018A Symphony of Lights\u2019 every day at 8pm. The show lasts for 15 mins, so it’s\u00a0nice to have a little walk by the harbour afterwards!

6. Discover the historic ‘Sheung Wan’<\/h2>\n

Apart from PMQ, there\u2019s a lot more to explore in Sheung Wan. The interesting district combines\u00a0old British-styled buildings with\u00a0traditional Chinese temples and stores along the streets. Walk around and discover the historical vibes!

\nPottinger Street is a fascinating spot! The unique looking steps with the red brick seats at the side form a picturesque street scene.

\nThe Lascar Row \u2013 a street selling Chinese antiques

\nLan Fong Yuen \u2013 one of the oldest eating spot in the area, serving HK style street snacks.
\nAt the same time there are a bunch of modern cafes, dessert places, bars & restaurants. You can def\u00a0spend the whole day here if you like!

7. Relaxing day at Stanley<\/h2>\n

Stanley is a perfect weekend hangout. It’s family friendly and\u00a0not far from the city centre.\u00a0On one side, you’ll find the busy Stanley Plaza, Murray House and a\u00a0beautiful pier! On the other side, you\u2019ll reach the main street, which is home to all the restaurants.

8. Fill your tum\u00a0in Mongkok<\/h2>\n

You can\u2019t get any more \u2018HK\u2019 than Mongkok! It’s not only the most crowded area in the city, it is actually the most densely populated district\u00a0in the world!\u00a0There are lots of people, and\u00a0LOADS\u00a0of tasty street food choices! Walk along the Sai Yeung Choi Street and you\u2019ll find a bunch\u00a0of food stalls selling fish balls, egg puffs, bubble tea, etc.\u00a0Don\u2019t miss out on Dundas Street, as there are lots of delicious and authentic street food options at very affordable prices.

\nThis\u00a0area is the ‘centre’ of Hong Kong meaning you can get to anywhere easily from here. Here’s the epicentre of all the Hong Kong bars and clubs, so get ready to party your nights away! Don\u2019t miss the famous clubs such as Volar, Play Club or Magnum.

10. See the HK skyline at the Peak<\/h2>\n

Lastly, you cannot leave the city without viewing the famous skyline.\u00a0During the day, you can walk along the hiking trail around the mountain, as it only takes about 1.5 hrs.\u00a0When\u00a0nighttime rolls around, head\u00a0up to the Peak Tower and end the day with the perfect view.
