Europe is so much more than just ancient history, kings and queens, castles and churches. Europe is also home to some of the tastiest and most interesting food in the world \u2013 but what should you eat and where? What are some examples of traditional European food? Let us show you the way\u2026<\/p>\n

1. Palacinky in Czech Republic\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Czech Republic is probably most famous for its great variety of pilsner beers, but the country also serves up some tasty\u00a0Czech foods<\/a>\u00a0to soak up all that alcohol. One of the must-eat dishes in Prague are palacinky pancakes. These crepe-like desserts are filled with fruit jam and served rolled up. Try them and other Czech food specialties on a\u00a0Prague food tour<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2. Currywurst in Germany<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In Germany it\u2019s all about the wurst! There are hundreds of varieties of sausage in Germany but one of the most popular fast food versions (imbiss<\/em>) is currywurst. You can get currywurst either with or without the skin of the sausage (order\u00a0mit darm<\/em>\u00a0for with,\u00a0ohne darm<\/em>\u00a0for without), but either way\u00a0the\u00a0sausage comes cut up and is served with ketchup and curry powder sprinkled on top. You can choose\u00a0different levels of spice and it\u2019s best when eaten with\u00a0pommes<\/em>\u00a0(fries) and a cola.<\/p>\n

3. Breakfast in England\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Don\u2019t think that the Full English with eggs, ham, beans, fried tomatoes and black pudding is all that the English breakfast has to offer. 4. Pizza in Italy\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There are few countries as well-known\u00a0for great\u00a0cuisine as Italy. And while there\u2019s more to Italian food than just pizza and pasta, you\u2019ve still got to try the original. It seems most cities in Italy are competing for the best pizza, but really, you\u2019ve got to\u00a0try it in Naples<\/a>\u00a0if you can. Oh, and while you\u2019re in Italy \u2014 might as well get your fill of gelato, too!<\/p>\n

5. Herring in Netherlands\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Continuing the list of traditional European food, in the Netherlands, it\u2019s all about the herring. As a seafaring country, fish has always been a part of the national diet. With the unique\u00a0Dutch herring preservation process<\/a>, the small silvery fish has become a symbol of Dutch food. It\u2019s best to eat during the first catch of the season, but almost all food markets in Amsterdam and elsewhere sell the fish as a healthy snack.<\/p>\n

6. Goulash in Hungary<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The hearty Hungarians have been eating goulash for centuries. It\u2019s usually a thick stew (or sometimes a soup) with meat and vegetables,\u00a0seasoned with paprika. It\u2019s best served in a bread bowl and with a beer.<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0<\/strong>\u0160truklji<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in Slovenia<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Slovenia might\u00a0not first come to mind as a culinary destination, but the country\u2019s unique placement in central Europe means Slovenian cuisine has taken the best of its neighbouring countries\u2019 cuisines. Located between the Mediterranean, the Alps and ancient Roman sites, you\u2019ll find amazing prosciutto, fine cheeses and hearty meat dishes in Slovenia.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s not all savory, the sweets are good too. And the best of the best is a crepe-like dish called \u0160truklji. These cottage cheese pancakes are made with tarragon (usually reserved for savory dishes) and they\u2019re unique to Ljubljana (the capital). 8. Cr\u00e8me Catalan in Catalonia, Spain\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In accordance with tradition, cr\u00e8me brulee may be very French, but the best custard dish (with burnt caramel) comes from Spain\u2019s northern state of Catalonia. The two countries dispute which came first, but Cr\u00e8me Catalan is cooked on the stove rather than the oven. Just about any trendy restaurant in Barcelona will serve the dish.<\/p>\n

9. Crepes in France\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Besides baguettes, there\u2019s nothing more French\u00a0than a crepe\u2014savoury or sweet. The best crepes are the simplest ones and can be found throughout France \u2014 we like the ones with Nutella on the inside!<\/p>\n

10. Beer in Belgium\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Okay, so beer isn\u2019t a food. But if you\u2019ve been to Belgium, you\u2019ll know that beer is practically a meal here. In a country with over 150 different breweries, Belgium is spoiled for choice in types of beer. 11. Haggis in Scotland\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Sheep\u2019s stomach stuffed with oats and other spices? Don\u2019t let the description scare you \u2014you just might be surprised how tasty it actually is! In Edinburgh, you can even get haggis burgers! And if you don\u2019t care for stuffed sheep stomach, there\u2019s always\u00a0deep-fried EVERYTHING<\/a>\u00a0in Scotland.<\/p>\n

12. Stew in Ireland<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Maybe it\u2019s the famously blustery Irish weather, but there\u2019s little better than a good Irish stew on a wet day in Ireland. (And really \u2013 most days are wet!) Traditionally made from lamb, this stew is best when it comes with a Guinness.<\/p>\n

13. Pierogi in Poland<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It seems every culture in the world has some sort of dumplings dish and in Poland, it\u2019s called a pierogi. They come in hundreds of varieties, but most traditionally they\u2019re baked or fired in butter with onions \u2014 and almost always served with sauerkraut! They can be vegetarian (in Poland, that means potatoes) or with ground meat. Entire restaurants are dedicated to pierogi!<\/p>\n

14. Banitsa in Bulgaria\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The\u00a0best of Bulgarian food<\/a>\u00a0lies in its Banitsa (\u0411\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430), a mixture of eggs, Bulgarian feta cheese and filo pastry baked in an\u00a0oven. Served as a breakfast food, it can be eaten hot or cold, but it\u2019s delicious at any time of day. Banitsa with spinach (spanachena banitsa), milk (mlechna banitsa) or pumpkin (tikvenik\/\u0422\u0438\u043a\u0432\u0435\u043d\u0438\u043a) are all excellent choices, and there are\u00a0plenty of special bakeries just for banitsa throughout Bulgaria.<\/p>\n
