Pisa, beautiful Pisa, rich in culture and monuments. Everyone knows it and everyone has dreamed of going there at least once. For all of you who have already been there, you surely have somewhere a photo in which you (and at least 50 other tourists in the background…) are with your arms holding up the world-famous Leaning Tower. So get lost in the wonders this city has to offer, and if you want to discover something more, have a look at the 10 curiosities about Pisa that we have collected here for you!<\/p>\n

1. Why is Pisa called Novella Tebe?<\/h2>\n

You may not know it, but Pisa owes this nickname to Dante and his Divine Comedy (33rd canto of the Inferno). You might be wondering why Pisa should be compared to Thebes? Well, what made them similar were the struggles that in both cases involved the two cities internally: Pisa would in fact have repeated the mistakes of Thebes (the fratricidal struggles of Eteocles and Polynices for control of the city) with its internal struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines (one of the protagonists was Count Ugolino, remember him?).<\/p>\n

During your stay in Pisa, don’t forget to pay a visit to the Torre della Muda (also known as the ‘Tower of Hunger’), where the count was locked up with his children and grandchildren to starve to death. Today, the tower is incorporated into the Palazzo dell’Orologio in the Piazza dei Cavalieri in the city centre.<\/p>\n

2. Why is the Tower of Pisa leaning and not falling?<\/h2>\n

\"10<\/p>\n

We already know that as soon as you arrive in front of the Tower, you will all pose for the famous photo where you pretend to hold it upright (we admit, we did it too…)! But we want to explain why this is so!<\/p>\n

The tower (or rather, the bell tower of the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta) was designed to be straight, but already during construction the third floor began to tilt due to the soft clay soil. The idea was then to build the other floors in the opposite direction to try to straighten it. The slope has continued to vary, increasing or decreasing depending on the interventions made to try to stabilise it, although it does not fall thanks to its centre of gravity always being within the base. Today it stands with a slope of about 4 degrees, and certainly no one could have said that a construction error would have made this beautiful city even more famous!<\/p>\n

The Tower can be visited, for a fee (it is a bit expensive!), and we advise you to book to avoid the queue!<\/p>\n

3. Why is the University of Pisa called Normale?<\/h2>\n

The Scuola Normale Superiore was founded in Pisa in 1810 by Napoleonic decree, on the model of the \u00c9cole Normale Sup\u00e9rieure in Paris. The objective of this university is to train future teachers: the adjective ‘normal’ in fact refers to the primary didactic function, namely that of transmitting ‘norms’, while ‘superior’ is linked to preparation for secondary teaching.<\/p>\n

Where? The university is located a short distance from the Muda Tower, in the Piazza dei Cavalieri.<\/p>\n

4. Why is Piazza dei Miracoli called Piazza dei Miracoli?<\/h2>\n

\"10<\/p>\n

Probably the first stop for anyone who decides to visit Pisa, this beautiful square with its famous monuments (the Duomo, the Baptistery, the Campo Santo and, of course, the Tower of Pisa) has even been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One more reason not to miss it! Moreover, everyone knows that it is called Piazza ‘dei Miracoli’ (Square of Miracles), but perhaps the reason is not so well known: the name is due to Gabriele D’Annunzio, who called the four monuments ‘miracles’ in one of his novels.<\/p>\n

5. What else to visit?<\/h2>\n

Pisa’s lungarnos are spectacular, to say the least, and probably the most atmospheric area of the city, both during the day and at night, especially when lit up at sunset. It is certainly a favourite spot for young Pisans in the evenings, but also very popular with tourists!<\/p>\n

6. Where to eat in Pisa?<\/h2>\n

We recommend the fantastic ice cream parlours or a dessert in one of the famous Pisan pastry shops along the banks of the Arno, such as La Bottega del Gelato (Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi 11).<\/p>\n

If, on the other hand, you are looking for a good, but inexpensive restaurant, we suggest I Porci Comodi (Via L’Arancio, 4), a few minutes from the banks of the Lungarno and usually open from 11am to 5pm.<\/p>\n

7. Where do young people go in the evening?<\/h2>\n

Young people in Pisa love the Lungarni in the evening! They meet there both in winter and summer along with the many tourists who flock to the city, and you can often hear live music there too.<\/p>\n

Another favourite destination is Piazza delle Vettovaglie, a characteristic little square full of places ideal for aperitifs in company. Here you are sure to find the place for you! Among the many, Cecco Rivolta offers excellent wines.<\/p>\n

And last but not least Piazza Garibaldi: the true meeting point for all the youngsters of Pisa, who start their evenings in this square.<\/p>\n

8. What are the highlights?<\/h2>\n

There are two most peculiar and curious things we have seen in this city:<\/p>\n

Sottobosco Libri & Caf\u00e8 is a very special place: a bit of a bookshop, a bit of a literary caf\u00e9, a bit of a jazz club and of course a bit of a restaurant, it is located in the historical centre of Pisa, in Piazza San Paolo all’Orto 3 in San Francesco. The place, also much loved by locals, is very creatively furnished and even has a piano for those brave enough to play in public!<\/p>\n

You might not have expected it, but in Pisa there is a beautiful mural by Keith Haring! Entitled ‘Tuttomondo’, it is painted on the back fa\u00e7ade of the convent of the ‘Servi di Maria’ friars in the church of S. Antonio and has world peace as its theme.<\/p>\n

9. Where to sleep in Pisa?<\/h2>\n

There are many places to sleep in Pisa!<\/p>\n

If you want to spend little money, we recommend Hostel Easy Pisa<\/a>. It’s in a great location, less than 5 minutes from the airport, just over 10 from the centre of Pisa and 25 from the Tower. This hostel offers breakfast and free WiFi. Ideal if you want to save money and explore the city!<\/p>\n

10. Why visit Pisa then?<\/h2>\n

Because this is truly a beautiful city! Rich in art and culture, so many important figures in literature have spoken of it, including Dante, D’Annunzio and Leopardi (a plaque on the Lungarno bears his thoughts on the city), and its monuments are known all over the world. But more simply, Pisa will provide you with a wonderful stay and entertaining evenings among many other tourists and young Pisans!<\/p>\n
