And we invited Manuela, a resident of the Marvellous City and author of the blog When in Rio, to write this practical guide that will explain how to travel cheaply to Rio de Janeiro.

Here you’ll learn how to get around the surreal prices and enjoy Rio’s natural beauty, all for free. What’s more, we’ve also got some great options for cheap or even free nightlife! Come and see:

Cheap Accommodation in Rio

First piece of advice for travelling cheaply in Rio, but also in any other destination: stay in hostels. <3

And did you know that in Rio there are good hostels and hostels with rates of up to R$50, in the middle of summer and at the weekend? Yes, check out the selection I’ve made for you. And don’t get me wrong. All of them have a rating higher than 8 here on Hostelworld.

By the way, did you know that in Hostelworld’s search engine you can put in the maximum price? I always do it like this: I put in the highest price I’m willing to pay and then the ‘rating’ filter with the minimum score I consider acceptable. Here’s a tip for your next trips!

El Misti, Botafogo (8.1)

From R$32

Pura Vida Hostel, Copacabana (8.2)

From R$45

Da Lapa, Lapa (9.2)

From R$53

Books Hostel, Lapa (8.7)

From R$50

📷 Carol Guido

Transport in Rio de Janeiro

The metro is the best way to get around Rio, especially if you come during Carnival, when it runs 24 hours a day and the city’s traffic comes to a standstill with millions of blocos parading.

On the first day, buy a prepaid card and put some money on it. This will save you a lot of time queuing. Even if it runs out early, you can top it up at cash machines in the stations. Oh, and you don’t pay anything extra for the card and there’s no bureaucracy!

To go out at night, the ideal option is to take public transport and return by taxi/Uber/Cabify. A good tip is to download the Vah app: it compares the price of the ride on all the available apps: taxis (the 99 Taxis and Easy Taxis apps often have a 30 per cent discount), Uber and Cabify. If you’re new to Cabify, use my code WHENINRIO to get 50% off your first 3 rides (up to R$20 off per ride).

By the way, depending on the route and the number of people, it’s even worth taking it on the outward journey too, as bus and metro fares here in Rio are already in the R$4 range 🙁

Food: Eating cheaply in Rio

📷 Lovely for Living

Going out to eat is tempting, I know, but how about buying a few things at the market and cooking at the Hostel? You might even end up having a collective dinner with new friends! When you can’t do that, I suggest you always look for restaurants that have a PF (prato feito) option or an executive dish, as it’s called in some places, as well as restaurants a kilo. For reference, in the Zona Sul I consider restaurants in the 30 reais/kg range to be cheap, in the R$40 range to be good value, and above that they are expensive.

If you’re on a budget, set aside a day to have a gala meal. I usually do this on the last few days of my trip, because it gives me a better idea of how much money I have available. See how you can also be happy by saving money? Just organise it properly, lol.

Lighthouse at will

📷 Carol Guido

Another good way to travel cheaply in Rio de Janeiro is to take things to drink in Styrofoam to the beach, to the bloco or even to the nightclub. This is normal here in Rio. One good thing about here is that, as a rule, we don’t worry too much about these things, you know? In Rio everything is very spontaneous, everyone is a bit hard up because of the crisis, so just go for it. Nobody’s judging you. 🙂

Free things to do in Rio de Janeiro:

Dona Marta viewpoint, Santa Teresa

📷 Victor Fernandes

If you’re not one of those people who makes a point of going to the traditional tourist spots to tick them off your list, there’s a place in Santa Teresa, near the entrance to Christ the Redeemer, called Mirante Dona Marta. From there, you’ll have two of Rio’s most impressive views in one place: Sugarloaf Mountain on one side and Christ on the other. It’s free and much less chaotic when crowded. Look at the view:
The downside (there always is) is that you can’t get there by public transport. I mean, you can, but it’s a bit complicated. But since you’ll be saving a lot of money on the tickets, you can split a taxi/Uber/Cabify, right?

Ah, important information: the sun sets on the other side, so the most incredible view is at sunrise. If you go at that time, always go in a group. But if you can’t, don’t miss out: the place is beautiful at any time of day!

Largo dos Guimarães, Santa Teresa

Take advantage of the fact that you’re already in Santa – the nickname for the intimate – and explore Rio’s most charming neighbourhood. Normally I’d tell you to take the cable car, but what used to be free now costs R$20! I think it’s very expensive, but I’ve ridden it a thousand times. So if you’re keen, go – it’s pretty cool. If you don’t, watching it pass by unannounced as you walk around the neighbourhood is also a good experience.

In Largo dos Guimarães, there are several craft shops, beautiful houses and a touch of old Rio. But my favourite place in the neighbourhood is Parque das Ruínas, which functions as a cultural centre. Sometimes there are food and music events, but the view of Sugar Loaf Mountain and this exotic building alone are worth the visit.

Cláudio Coutinho Trail, Urca

One way to cheapen your trip to Sugarloaf Mountain and still enjoy a fitness programme is to hike the Cláudio Coutinho trail, which starts in Urca.

It’s very light, takes around 30 minutes and I’ve seen both children and older people doing it. It’s very easy, especially if you take your time and walk calmly.

Along the trail, you arrive at Morro da Urca, which is the name of the lowest hill on Sugar Loaf Mountain. From there, you have a few options:

Take the cable car to the second hill at half price (R$20, half price)

Enjoy the view from there and hike down (until 7pm, after that access is closed)

Enjoy the view from there and take the cable car down for just R$10 (half price)

Pedra Bonita Trail, São Conrado

Rio has several trails with incredible views, but the one I always recommend is the Pedra Bonita trail, which starts in the São Conrado neighbourhood. It’s light and quick (30 to 40 minutes) and has marvellous views. For the more adventurous, you can go at dawn and watch the sunrise from the top. But always go in a group and check your torch beforehand!

Beaches in Rio… and more beaches

📷 Carol Guido

I know you don’t need me to tell you this, but Rio has several marvellous beaches. On the most famous beach in the world, Copacabana, I prefer the left-hand corner, which has become another neighbourhood: Leme. It’s a bit emptier and less touristy. There’s also the Fishermen’s Path, better known as ‘Mureta do Leme’, which is great for enjoying a late afternoon with music from the kiosks and a cold beer.

Ipanema is also a must, especially for the sunset. In summer, it sets right over the water and is probably one of the most beautiful in the world. Many people watch it from the top of Pedra do Arpoador, but I particularly like being on the sand and getting into the water just as the show begins. It’s thrilling!

For the more adventurous, Rio also has empty beaches, but they are a little further away from those in the South Zone. There are several: Praia da Barra, Recreio, Reserva, among others. For surfing, Prainha and Macumba are the most popular for their constant waves. Grumari and Joatinga are also popular, but it can be difficult to get a spot at the weekend. Of all these, Barra is the most accessible by public transport, especially now that it has a metro (line 4 – Jardim Oceânico station).

Cycling around Lagoa

Another trip I love to take is to get on a bike and ride around the Lagoa. The cheapest way to do this is to use the Itaú bicycles. The daily pass costs R$5.00 and you can use it all day, for journeys of up to 60 minutes with a 15-minute break between each one. On their website everything is well explained, with frequently asked questions and everything you need to know.

Parque Lage

📷 Victor Fernandes

Another delightful programme to do on a cheap trip to Rio that can be done on the same day as the Lagoa tour is Parque Lage, in the Jardim Botânico neighbourhood. Unlike the official Botanical Garden, which costs R$15 to enter, Parque Lage is free.

The building is outrageously beautiful and from there you have an incredible view of Christ, which you’ve probably seen on Instagram, lol.

It’s home to the Cafe du Lage, which is famous for its breakfast. But my tip for backpackers is to go to the market, take a towel and have a nice picnic in the park’s gardens. Another good tip is to go in the morning, at least in summer, to enjoy the park at slightly cooler temperatures 😉

Mureta da Urca

Another classic programme in Rio that’s also free! The post-beach evening in Urca is a perfect transition from day to night, with a cold beer and a relaxed atmosphere. Bar Urca(Rua Cândido Gaffrée, 205) is the most traditional and has some delicious snacks. But… it’s expensive.

While we’re on the subject of travelling cheaply to Rio de Janeiro, let’s get to the facts: the Urca wall is huge. The Urca Bar section is the most crowded and there’s often not even a seat. But that’s the high society part, so to speak. The humblest part has been affectionately nicknamed “Pobreta” da Urca by the locals, hahaha. The best part has a view of Christ and is opposite the police station and the Urca Grill(Rua Marechal Cantuária, 10), where you can buy beer at a fair price.

Free nightlife

📷 Victor Fernandes

It’s time to talk about my speciality, hahaha. In Rio there are lots of things to do for free or at least for cheap, and usually in open places. I love it <3

Lapa

Places to travel in Rio? Ah, Lapa. A classic of Rio nightlife: love it or hate it, the fact is that it’s one of the most democratic places in the city. There are people from all tribes, all of them. There’s samba, rock, funk and MPB. There are pubs, tidy bars and expensive restaurants. I admit I haven’t been there much, but I particularly like to stay on the Arcos side (for those coming from the South Zone), as I find the atmosphere more pleasant.

A must is Bar da Cachaça (on the corner of Gomes Freire and Mem de Sá), which has an incredible variety of cachaças in a very relaxed atmosphere. And to eat for very little money, how about a salty snack for 1 real(Rua do Lavradio, 172)? I swear it’s delicious, hahaha, I’ve eaten it several times!

I don’t have enough space here to give you all the tips on Lapa, so if you want to avoid the pitfalls, take a look at this blog post.

Pedra do Sal

Pedra do Sal is where samba was born, so it’s only natural that it’s home to some of the best samba in the city. The atmosphere is very relaxed: street vendors selling beer, the samba in the middle and people lounging on the surrounding slopes and stairs.

A good tip is to go early and explore the surrounding area too. You can do everything on foot: the Museum of Tomorrow, the Rio Art Museum (it has an incredible terrace), Kobra’s street art mural on the Olympic Boulevard and even the bucolic Morro da Conceição, which is just above Pedra do Sal. There’s a complete and detailed itinerary of the region in this post here.

When? Samba every Monday and Friday from 6pm. There’s also jazz on Tuesdays from 7pm (programme subject to change)

Tiradentes Square

Another place that always has good music and young people gathered is just outside Praça Tiradentes, also called Beco das Artes.

Bar do Nanam, in Rua Imperatriz Leopoldina, has an eclectic programme, with Latin music on Tuesdays, Jazz on Wednesdays and Saturdays, forró on Thursdays and varied options on other days. Of course, the programme can be changed at any time by the bar, but you can trust that it’s always good music!

More options in Rio?

📷 Carol Guido

These are the places that always have free options, but to find out what’s going on every weekend, I post the diary on my blog When in Rio every Thursday.
