And even though its popularity has grown\u00a0in leaps and bounds over the last few years, when you wander through the maze of streets in neighbourhoods like the Alfama and Gra\u00e7a, it stills feels like there is so much that is yet to be discovered. Lisbon is compact and relatively small as far as\u00a0European capitals go, but the neighbourhoods are diverse and distinct. This means where you stay can have\u00a0a huge\u00a0impact on how you experience the city. Whether you want to be steps from large boulevards lined with restaurants and boutiques or enjoy a\u00a0bica\u00a0(espresso)\u00a0every morning with the local crowd, here&#8217;s a guide to finding where to stay\u00a0in Lisbon.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/best-hostels-in-lisbon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Check out these amazing hostels in Lisbon!<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<h2>Alfama<\/h2>\n<p>Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in Western Europe, but the majority of what you&#8217;ll see was built during the eighteenth century. After most of Lisbon crumbled under the\u00a0catastrophic\u00a0earthquake on November 1,\u00a01755, the rest was either consumed by fire or swept away by the tsunami that trailed close behind. The ancient Moorish area called the Alfama that slopes up one of the seven hills of Lisbon miraculously survived.<\/p>\n<p>Get an overview of the area by hopping on the crammed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carris.pt\/pt\/electrico\/28E\/descendente\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Tram 28<\/a>\u00a0where\u00a0you&#8217;ll hurtle past sites like the\u00a0S\u00e9\u00a0Cathedral. Catch the last train at night to avoid the queues and see the city in a different light. While\u00a0there is a growing number of tourists that\u00a0are\u00a0pounding\u00a0the limestone pavements of the main streets (which are still incredibly tiny by any standards), you can still find a more authentic\u00a0Lisboa\u00a0through the alleyways and down the staircases. Pass\u00a0through streets shaded by laundry strung out to dry,\u00a0a lady selling\u00a0Ginja\u00a0(Portuguese\u00a0cherry\u00a0liqueur) from her front window, and get drawn in by the sweet, mournful sounds of\u00a0fado\u00a0drifting from a small caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Come here to wander and get lost, and while you&#8217;re walking the streets, hunt for your favourite fa\u00e7ade among the buildings covered\u00a0in colourful tiles. See the whole city spread out before you from the S\u00e3o Jorge Castle, or find your way over to\u00a0Miradoura\u00a0da\u00a0Gra\u00e7a. From here, you&#8217;ll have a view of both S\u00e3o Jorge Castle and all of downtown Lisbon.\u00a0Miradoura\u00a0da\u00a0Gra\u00e7a\u00a0is also worth a visit for its open-air caf\u00e9 where you can savour delicious food and drink with the view. Before you leave, step inside\u00a0Gra\u00e7a\u00a0Church, housing an ornate Baroque interior dating from the 13th\u00a0century. If you still have some life left in your legs, spend the extra effort to walk another\u00a0ten minutes to the top of the hill. At\u00a0Miradouro\u00a0da\u00a0Nossa\u00a0Senhora\u00a0do Monte, you&#8217;ll be one of the few enjoying the arguably best lookout in town.<\/p>\n<p>If you are looking for a nice place to eat some trendy Portuguese food, listen to good music, have a glass of wine and party a bit, head to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DAMASLISBOA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Damas<\/a>, a super fun and versatile space in the heart of Gra\u00e7a. They offer vegan and vegetarian options for food and a lot of really interesting cultural events. It was the\u00a0other neighbourhood that survived the earthquake but due to its prior reputation as a slum, the area didn&#8217;t see many visitors. Buildings are being renovated and restored, so that is rapidly changing. Walk down Beco das\u00a0Farinhas\u00a0to meet the elderly inhabitants\u00a0of\u00a0Mouraria; there is an outdoor art display by photographer\u00a0Camilla Watson\u00a0with photos of local residents.<\/p>\n<p>To see the work of more local artists,\u00a0duck\u00a0into the\u00a0Parque de\u00a0Estacionamento\u00a0do\u00a0Ch\u00e3o\u00a0do Loureiro (yes, it&#8217;s a parking garage!). Every level is painted by a different street artist, showcasing some of the best talent in Portugal.\u00a0As the most multicultural neighbourhood in Lisbon, head over to the\u00a0Martim\u00a0Moniz square with its rows of restaurant kiosks\u00a0if you&#8217;re in the mood for something other than Portuguese food.\u00a0Keep your eye out for Escadinhas de S\u00e3o Cristov\u00e3o, the smallest bookstore in the world. Also visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.renovaramouraria.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Renovar a Mouraria,<\/a>\u00a0a local association that promotes multicultural events and has a cafe with cheap and delicious food.<\/p>\n<p>Mouraria and Alfama have some of the most authentic local restaurants in the city. To really live like a local you need to visit one of the\u00a0famous underground secret Chinese restaurants in the area. These are family run restaurants hidden in backstreet apartments. They are unregulated but frequently populated by locals. Just find an ajar door and press the doorbell. You will be welcomed into a cosy and simple space (often a living room) with authentic Chinese food. Don\u2019t forget to try the fried ice cream.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64594\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/30078592_1010719042409517_3021306516876558336_n.jpg\" alt=\"Where to stay in Lisbon - Mouraria\" width=\"875\" height=\"1094\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/pedropraz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">\ud83d\udcf7<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alicegreta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">@alicegreta<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Baixa<\/h2>\n<p>Baixa\u00a0is downtown Lisbon.\u00a0If being central is key to your plans, then\u00a0Baixa\u00a0is the best area to stay in Lisbon, though you will be sacrificing that local neighbourhood charm for an\u00a0area that is mostly businesses and hotels.\u00a0The Rossio Train Station, one that you&#8217;ll likely use if you&#8217;re taking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/3-must-do-lisbon-day-trips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">day trip to Sintra<\/a>, is in the middle of this neighbourhood. The area is mostly flat, so it&#8217;s easy to stroll\u00a0the wide\u00a0boulevards. Join\u00a0the\u00a0crowds\u00a0perusing the shops along\u00a0Rua\u00a0Augusta\u00a0and relax in\u00a0the impressive\u00a0squares\u00a0flanked\u00a0by\u00a0palaces and government buildings.\u00a0Take the elevator to the top of\u00a0Arco\u00a0Triunfal\u00a0da\u00a0Rua\u00a0Augusta;\u00a0you&#8217;ll get a bird&#8217;s eye view of\u00a0Rua\u00a0Agusta, Comercio Square, and the river beyond. Though most of the area is teeming with tourists,\u00a0stop by\u00a0Church of Nossa Senhora\u00a0da\u00a0Concei\u00e7\u00e3o\u00a0Velha for a few moments of calm. Only the fa\u00e7ade of this church survived the 1755 earthquake\u00a0and the rest was rebuilt\u00a0from the ruins.\u00a0For an authentic Portuguese bakery experience, head to Nova Pombalina, a delicious small cafe with natural juices, pastries and sandwiches.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64700 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/29404137_165949434122334_2191246160700637184_n.jpg\" alt=\"Where to stay in Lisbon - Baixa\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1350\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/pedropraz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">\ud83d\udcf7<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/duemme.7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">@duemme.7<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Chiado<\/h2>\n<p>If I were ranking neighbourhoods by the quality of their\u00a0past\u00e9is\u00a0de\u00a0nata, those delectable little Portuguese egg tarts, Chiado would be at the top of the list. No matter where you stay in Lisbon, make at least one\u00a0stop at\u00a0Manteigaria\u00a0to pick up a few. There&#8217;s more than just delicious sweets in this neighbourhood: try Sea Me for fresh seafood,\u00a0Taberna da\u00a0Rua\u00a0Das Flores\u00a0for its\u00a0ever-changing menu of small plates, and O\u00a0Trevo\u00a0for simple but tasty\u00a0\u20ac2\u00a0bifanas\u00a0(pork sandwiches). To see a more historic side of this neighbourhood, visit the Carmo Convent. Stepping inside is a bit surreal; you can still see the damage caused by the Great Lisbon Earthquake as the roof is still missing. Chiado restaurants can be very touristy and overpriced so look out for local, authentic places.\u00a0For some really delicious vegetarian food, don\u2019t forget to check <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jardimdascerejas.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Jardim das Cerejas<\/a>. Originally a working-class neighbourhood, Bairro Alto comes alive at night with people from all backgrounds\u00a0looking\u00a0to\u00a0bar-hop and party until the early morning hours. Keep this in mind if you&#8217;re not planning on joining the revellers as noise may be an issue.\u00a0Most fa\u00e7ades that weren&#8217;t already covered in\u00a0azulejos\u00a0have received a colourful street art\u00a0makeover.\u00a0Bairro Alto is a place to drink on the streets and meet new people. You can get a pint in most places for less than 1,50 and you just spend your night drinking outside. If you&#8217;re looking for an authentic place to listen to\u00a0fado, make a reservation at\u00a0Tasca do Chico at seats fill fast at this small bar with live\u00a0fado\u00a0singers.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a more cultural experience, check <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/49-ZDB-112628415492331\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Galeria Z\u00e9 dos Boi<\/a>s (ZDB), an art centre created as a non-profit organisation. People flock to Cais do Sodr\u00e9 during the day for the\u00a0Time Out Market Lisbon, a fish market remade into a\u00a0food hall with outposts from some of Portugal&#8217;s most prominent chefs and\u00a0restaurateurs.\u00a0Head down the famous &#8220;Pink Street&#8221; to check out the most popular bars and clubs.<\/p>\n<p>Cais do Sodr\u00e9\u00a0has become such a hotspot that it is\u00a0edging out Bairro Alto as the neighbourhood with the best nightlife in Lisbon. You can&#8217;t leave Lisbon without eating sardines, so try some of Portugal&#8217;s famed canned fish at\u00a0Sol e\u00a0Pesca,\u00a0a bar\u00a0housed in an old fishing shop.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for something more chill, visit Arco Da Velha, a cafe and restaurant decorated like your grandma&#8217;s house. This small residential neighbourhood oozes with\u00a0charm and\u00a0its streets are lined with fabulous shops and boutiques.\u00a0If you&#8217;re looking for unique Portuguese finds, peruse the goods at places like Entre\u00a0Tanto\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a021 PR Concept Store.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Embaixada\u00a0is one of the most\u00a0stunning\u00a0buildings\u00a0in Lisbon;\u00a0this Neo-Moorish palace from the 1800s now\u00a0functions as a two-story\u00a0fashion bazaar with a caf\u00e9 in the interior courtyard.\u00a0You&#8217;ll find plenty of delicious, although more expensive, eats around the neighbourhood, like peri\u00a0peri\u00a0chicken at\u00a0Frangasqueira\u00a0Nacional, fresh and basic fish dishes at\u00a0Churrasqueira\u00a0da Paz, or\u00a0pregos\u00a0on\u00a0bolo do\u00a0caco\u00a0(steak sandwich on flatbread)\u00a0at\u00a0O Prego da\u00a0Peixara.<\/p>\n<p>Gelateria\u00a0Nannarella\u00a0piles\u00a0cones high with scoops of\u00a0authentic\u00a0Italian gelato and Bettina &amp;\u00a0Niccol\u00f2\u00a0Corallo Chocolate &amp; Caf\u00e9 make three-ingredient chocolate sorbet with the chocolate from its\u00a0plantation in S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9. Many families call this neighbourhood\u00a0home\u00a0and the streets are always busy with shoppers, dog walkers and people\u00a0out for a daily stroll.\u00a0Swing by the Campo de\u00a0Ourique\u00a0Market,\u00a0a smaller version of the Time Out Market in\u00a0Cais do Sodr\u00e9, for fruits and vegetables or even dinner from one of the food stalls.<\/p>\n<p>Get your fill of Portuguese sweets at\u00a0Panifica\u00e7\u00e3o\u00a0Mec\u00e2nica\u00a0or\u00a0pick up some P\u00e3o\u00a0de Deus\u00a0from one of the many traditional bakeries in the area. At the edge of the neighbourhood you&#8217;ll find\u00a0Tapada\u00a0das\u00a0Necessidades, a large garden area that feels a\u00a0bit forgotten\u00a0with its empty fountains\u00a0and a glass-domed greenhouse sitting\u00a0bare. With\u00a0peacocks\u00a0strolling the grounds and space to stretch out on one of the few grassy fields\u00a0in the city, it\u00a0still feels like a little slice of peaceful paradise.<\/p>\n<h2>Intendente<\/h2>\n<p>Intendente is one of Lisbon\u2019s trendiest areas where you can find a lot of interesting people, good food and cultural events. Zona Franca and RDA associations are amazing places to hang out, meet locals and try incredible vegetarian food. You can become a member by making a donation to help them run their activities.<\/p>\n<p>Crew Hassam is an extremely versatile place where you can dance all night long, browse their vinyl collection, eat pizza and pancakes and just relax in one of their many comfy areas. There is always something interesting happening at Casa Independente, a creative space located in\u00a0 a beautiful mansion just in front of Largo do Intendente.
