We know you\u2019ve probably been spoiled by having some of the most incredible cuisine the world has to offer, and we know that British food isn\u2019t usually very high on people\u2019s bucket lists of tastiness. But let me assure you: it\u2019s actually quite yummy, quite yummy indeed. Food is an essential part of travel, and to really understand a culture here you\u2019ve got to taste the local flavour! In honour of this week\u2019s World Food Day, here\u2019s a map of some of the best, courtesy of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralillustration.com\/illustrators\/edward-mcgowan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\"><em>Edward McGowan<\/em><\/a><em> for\u00a0<\/em><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eatinglondontours.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Eating London<\/a>:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/british-foods.jpg\" class=\"post links\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7093 size-full post links\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/british-foods.jpg\" alt=\"british foods\" width=\"535\" height=\"674\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. \u00a0Fish &amp; Chips<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the most famous example. If you\u2019re thinking I\u2019m talking about any old fried fish and French fries, you are dead wrong! Authentic Atlantic cod or haddock, thick, on-the-spot friend chunks of potatoey goodness, all wrapped up in paper and smothered with salt and malt vinegar.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/fish-and-chips.jpg\" class=\"post links\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7094 size-full post links\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/fish-and-chips.jpg\" alt=\"fish and chips\" width=\"535\" height=\"535\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. \u00a0Full English Breakfast<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You haven\u2019t lived until you\u2019ve had a proper full English breakfast. When visiting England, put away those boring old flakes and lacklustre orange juice, and order yourself a steaming plate of sausage, eggs, bacon, toast, mushrooms, tomatoes, beans and hash browns. A particular favourite of mine is offered at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.speedyscafe.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Speedy\u2019s Caf\u00e9<\/a> in London, right next door to the property that is used as Sherlock\u2019s Baker Street residence in the BBC show of the same name. What are you waiting for?!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/breakfast.jpg\" class=\"post links\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7096 size-full post links\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/breakfast.jpg\" alt=\"breakfast\" width=\"535\" height=\"535\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. \u00a0Pork Pie<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Oh the traditional pork pie. Its name means (in cockney rhyming slang) being less than truthful, but I ain\u2019t lying when I say that they are delicious! Made with cured pork and scrumptious pastry, this snack is perfect for busy travellers on the go, and are often sold hot at train stations and pubs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/pork-pie.jpg\" class=\"post links\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7098 size-full post links\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/pork-pie.jpg\" alt=\"pork pie\" width=\"535\" height=\"535\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. \u00a0Bara Brith (Welsh Tea bread)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Bara Brith is another baked wonder. It\u2019s sort of like a cake loaf with brown sugar, mixed dried fruit and tea flavouring. Welsh tea bread is definitely a must-try if you\u2019re venturing over to beautiful Wales in the western United Kingdom. I hope you will enjoy it as much as we do. A good tip is to wrap the Bara Brith in tin foil and keep it in an airtight container. That might seem simple but it will keep for quite a number of days during your Welsh journey.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/welsh-tea-bread.jpg\" class=\"post links\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7099 size-full post links\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/welsh-tea-bread.jpg\" alt=\"welsh tea bread\" width=\"535\" height=\"535\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. \u00a0Whisky<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While you\u2019re here, head up north to Scotland to sample some world famous scotch whisky. There are distilleries all over the region and many offer tours and samples of their fine scotch. Of course be sure to drink responsibly!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/whisky.jpg\" class=\"post links\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7101 size-full post links\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/whisky.jpg\" alt=\"whisky\" width=\"535\" height=\"535\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>6. \u00a0Tea<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Okay, you knew this one was going to sneak into this blog post somehow right? But honestly it\u2019s for good reason. We are famous for our tea. We know tea. We love tea. We make some of the best tea in the universe, and you would be just bonkers not to try some while you\u2019re here. Hot tip: grab a crumpet too (I know it\u2019s a clich\u00e9 but just trust me on this one).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/tea.jpg\" class=\"post links\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7102 size-full post links\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/tea.jpg\" alt=\"tea\" width=\"535\" height=\"535\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>7. \u00a0Cider<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Especially popular in the West Country, British cider is glorious. That might sound hyperbolic but remember, we\u2019re talking about Britain. Australia has sharks. India is full of amazing spices. Britain has apples and rain clouds. Definitely worth trying on a visit to picturesque Cornwall or Devon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/cider.jpg\" class=\"post links\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7104 size-full post links\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/cider.jpg\" alt=\"cider\" width=\"535\" height=\"535\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>8. \u00a0<\/strong><strong>Salt Beef Bagel<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We recently featured one of our favourite off the beaten track places in all of London, the <a href=\"\/blog\/londons-hidden-gems-the-city-through-the-eyes-of-a-local\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"post links\">Beigel Bake<\/a> on Brick Lane &#8211; an attraction of its own. Their signature delight is the mouth-watering salt beef bagel. More beef than your bagel can hold, and softer, warmer bread than you\u2019ve probably ever had in your life. This one is no joke. Get one!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/bagel.jpg\" class=\"post links\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7105 size-full post links\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/bagel.jpg\" alt=\"bagel\" width=\"535\" height=\"535\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>9. \u00a0<\/strong><strong>Haggis<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is the big one. Haggis is probably responsible for 90% (total guesstimate) of the crazy rumours about British cuisine, but it\u2019s actually anticlimactically tame and tasty. Sure you might have to get over how it\u2019s cooked but inside it\u2019s all diced meat, onion, and a few other little ingredients. Haggis is definitely a must while travelling up north in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/haggis.jpg\" class=\"post links\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7106 size-full post links\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostelworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/haggis.jpg\" alt=\"haggis\" width=\"535\" height=\"535\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>10. \u00a0<\/strong><strong>Beer<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The common denominator. Everyone is always looking for a good beer right? Especially after a long day spent seeing all the attractions London and the UK have to offer. Every country seems to have its own speciality and Britain is no exception.
