Southeast Asia is home to some of the most beautiful, colourful and strange temples in the world. We’ve compiled a list of our favourite Asian temples, from the iconic Angkor Wat in Cambodia to the surreal and colourful Sri Mariamman in Singapore.<\/p>\n

Wat Rong Khun (Chiang Rai, Thailand)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"Asian<\/p>\n

This remarkable temple, unlike anything else you’ll see in Thailand, was created by Chalermchai Kositpipat, a well-known Buddhist and artist. Located less than three hours from Chiang Mai, the temple’s striking white colour is said to symbolise the purity of Lord Buddha.<\/p>\n

Wat Suwan Khuha (Phang-Nga, Thailand)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The cave temple of Wat Suwan Khuha is built inside a limestone mountain, and at its centre is a 50-metre high reclining Buddha. The temple is decorated with ceramic tiles and images of the Buddha, and there is a feeding ground for monkeys in front of it! Be sure to keep a tight grip on your belongings as these monkeys are very adept thieves.<\/p>\n

Bagan Temples (Bagan, Myanmar)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"Bagan<\/p>\n

The ancient city of Bagan is lined with magnificent temples that grace any trip to Southeast Asia. More than 10,000 temples, pagodas and monasteries were built here between the 11th and 13th centuries, of which more than 2,000 still survive today. You can see them from above on a hot air balloon ride, or save a few pennies and rent a bike.<\/p>\n

Sri Mariamman (Chinatown, Singapore)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"Sri<\/p>\n

You can’t miss Sri Mariamman, the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore, located in bustling Chinatown. This surreal temple looks like it was cut out of a cartoon as it is covered in colourful statues of gods, goddesses and mythical creatures. Admission is free, but if you want to take photos or videos (which you probably will), you’ll have to pay a small fee.<\/p>\n

Kek Lok Si (Penang, Malaysia)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Located on the island of Penang, Kek Lok Si is one of the largest Buddhist temple complexes in Southeast Asia and is surrounded by scenic vistas and rolling hills. The best time to visit is during Chinese New Year, when the temple is fully illuminated at night. You can drive to the top, but it’s more fun to climb the many steps as they are lined with shops and stalls.<\/p>\n

Prambanan and Borobudur (Java, Indonesia)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"Prambanan<\/p>\n

Prambanan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located in Java, about 17 km from the city centre. It is the largest Hindu temple in Southeast Asia, surrounded by a beautiful park. Head there at sunset and catch the traditional Ramayana ballet, which takes place on an open stage with the magnificent Prambanan Temple as a backdrop. A few hours to the northwest is the sacred Borabudur Temple (pictured above), which some believe is even more spectacular. It is the largest Buddhist temple in the world with 504 Buddha statues and a huge structure reaching 115 feet in height.<\/p>\n

Wat Pho, (Bangkok, Thailand)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"Wat<\/p>\n

Wat Pho is famous for its giant, 160-metre-long reclining Buddha and is located in Bangkok’s Rattanakosin district near the Grand Palace. Wat Pho is one of the largest and oldest temples in Bangkok and is home to over a thousand Buddha images. The temple is also home to the national headquarters for the preservation and teaching of traditional Thai medicine and massage, so when you’ve finished exploring the temple, why not treat yourself to a traditional massage. Top tip: be wary of people who tell you that Wat Pho (or other nearby sights) are closed during the day; these are usually scammers, so ignore them.<\/p>\n

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan (Bali, Indonesia)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is located on the shores of Lake Bratan and is built on several small islands. Once you’ve seen the temple itself, you can take a stroll through the surrounding botanical gardens.<\/p>\n

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (Chiang Mai, Thailand)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"Wat<\/p>\n

Wat Phra That is located on Doi Suthep Mountain near Chiang Mai and is often overlooked by travellers. The journey to the top takes 30 to 45 minutes by local taxi from the city centre, but is definitely worth it for the traditional dancers, elaborate ceremonies and friendly monks in apricot robes. Wat Phra That also offers one of the best panoramic views of Chiang Mai. Be sure to check out the excellent street food and shops at the foot of the temple.<\/p>\n

Cebu Taoist Temple (Cebu, Philippines)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This temple looks like it was taken out of China and planted in the Philippines. The entrance is a replica of the Great Wall of China and the temple is a centre for the worship of Taoism, a religion that follows the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu.<\/p>\n

Angkor Wat (Siem Reap, Cambodia)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"Angkor<\/p>\n

Angkor Wat, another UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest religious monument in the world, deserves a place on every visitor’s bucket list. Located less than 6 km from Siem Reap, it is one of Cambodia’s most famous attractions. Given Angkor Wat’s popularity, you have to arrive early to really appreciate its beauty and take great photos – but it really is worth it.<\/p>\n
