Bergamo is a city in the Northern part of Italy, very close to Milan. It’s divided into two parts, the Bergamo Alta (the Upper City) and Bergamo Bassa (the Lower City), each with its own personality. So whether you’re looking for great architecture and medieval art, or you’re more into shopping and music, you shouldn’t miss Bergamo off your list!
The best hostels in Bergamo are very close to the city centre and they offer everything you may need, from free breakfast to fast wi-fi. Relax on the sofas of a hostel in Bergamo or enjoy your meals with a great view. Enjoy the events organised by the hostels and meet many travellers just like you!
Città Alta is the old and touristic part of Bergamo. It’s surrounded by walls built during medieval times and it’s filled with squares with incredible monuments. Visit the Piazza Vecchia, with the Campanone and the Palace of the Ragione or the Duomo square, where there is the Cathedral with the Crucifix Chapel.
Bergamo Bassa is the modern and commercial part of the city, but you can still pay a visit to the Church of Saint Bartholomew and Stephen. If you want to shop you can walk through the Sentierone and end up at the Donizetti theatre. Then, freshen up with a scoop of stracciatella gelato, a very popular Italian flavour that was invented here! In between the two cities, you’ll find Borgo Pignolo and the Games, which is the gallery of contemporary and modern art.
Bergamo is full of events and there’s always something to do. For the film freaks, check out the two film festivals it hosts: Bergamo Film Meeting and the Cortopotere Short Film Festival. Don’t miss out on the Soap Box Rally, where homemade quirky vehicles compete through the streets of Bergamo, or BergamoScienza if you’re into science fairs.
If it’s night time and you’ve got your dancing shoes on, head towards Piazza Pontida for an aperitivo and then move to Borgo Santa Caterina for music, bars, and clubs. Bergamo has its own airport: the airport of Bergamo-Orio al Serio, that is only 5 km from the centre. It’s also equipped with a train station where you can easily reach Turin and Milan. You can walk around the city or use the different bus lines. To get from Bergamo Bassa to Bergamo Alta, you can use the funicular or climb the picturesque stairs called scorlazzini.
