Get to grips with nature or a taste of the party life in Cabo San Lucas, on Mexico's Baja Peninsula. This small town is famous for its pure white beaches, sea cliffs and a buzzing hotel strip. Head into the countryside to see cacti and caracara birds or stay in the heart of the action and try your hand at water sports and tequila tasting. With turquoise waters all around you and the downtown bars moments away, you can have the best of both worlds in Cabo.
Mix with other travellers at a Cabo San Lucas hostel that hosts regular event nights. Some have common areas with barbecues so you can cook up dinner together. Get a flavour for the party town's past at a former brothel turned hostel or listen to live music at a place with an on-site bar or a DJ set up by the pool. You'll find Cabo hostels with free breakfasts, while most also have free Wi-Fi. In Cabo for the nature? Stay in a hostel that doubles up as a diving centre.
Downtown Cabo San Lucas overlooks Medano Beach. Here you'll find the heart of the town's nightlife with plenty of bars along the hotel strip. The area around the marina is a little more peaceful; watch the boats bobbing on the waters and the local fishermen bringing in their catches. Outside of town (about 45 minutes by car) is Todos Santos, known for its colonial-era houses and authentic craft shops.
Cabo San Lucas has a few beaches to choose from. For swimming head to Playa del Amor for a dip in the Sea of Cortez and for surfing stay local at Medano Beach. You can also go whale watching with a tour to see the famous humpbacks in the area. To catch a sunset over the sea while you're in town, hike up Mount Solmar for the best views. San José del Cabo is Cabo San Lucas' calmer sister town to the northeast. Brimming with artists and galleries, it offers a peaceful change of pace.
Los Cabos International Airport is easy to reach by taxi, shuttle or the local SuburCabo bus, which takes around 45 minutes. The Terminal de Autobuses Águila is 10 minutes outside of town for bus connections to other cities in Mexico. To get around town, hop on the bus or take a cab.
