About Honolulu

Honolulu is the capital city of Hawaii, and is located on the Island of O’ahu, the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands. It has a population of nearly one million people (2015), which is astounding considering it’s in the middle of the Pacific Ocean! Honolulu is largely associated with Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head (Named Lē’ahi by the Hawaiian people), a dormant volcanic cone that is a remnant of the Honolulu Volcanic Series.

The hostels in Honolulu are largely in Waikiki and offer great access to the world-famous Waikiki Beach, countless shops and restaurants, and legendary nightlife. They’re also perfectly located to enjoy Kapi’olani Regional Park and Diamond Head State Monument. Each hostel has different offerings such as free beach and snorkel equipment, excursions, and surf rentals; you just need to choose the one that’s right for you! You’ll be near the beach and in a vibrant area no matter what.

Since the hostels are so close to the beaches, it only makes sense that you would spend your days soaking up the sun, sipping cool beverages, and enjoying a good book. Taking a break from the sand and enjoying a picnic in one of Honolulu’s grassy parks is another great way to enjoy the amazing weather.

When the call to adventure comes (and don’t worry, it will come) there are countless other ways to experience Honolulu in all its splendour. Snorkelling gives you access to an entirely new world of sea creatures and vegetation or grab a surfboard and ride the waves to freedom. Honolulu is also riddled with hikes, waterfalls, and nature trails that are an ideal way to experience the unique volcanic landscape; it will feel like you’re in Jurassic park!

Getting around Honolulu and the rest of O’ahu is made easy by a service called TheBus. There are buses all around the island so it’s easy to get where you want to go! There are also rail transit options through Honolulu. If you don’t want to deal with transit timetables you’ll have to rent a car, but that shouldn’t sting as badly because of the money you save from the hostels! The ultimate cruising freedom will come from renting a bike- nothing beats Hawaiian wind in your hair.
