About Male

As the beating heart of the Maldives, Male lets you experience real Maldivian culture beyond its white-sand beaches. It's a pulsing metropolis in the middle of the Indian Ocean, where modern high-rises sit alongside colourful narrow streets and visitors get a real sense of community. Vibrant bazaars and quirky alcohol-free cafés make this capital city an energising break from the secluded shores of its surrounding islands, even if you only spend a day or two here.

You’ll find Male hostels both in the city’s bustling centre and in quieter spots on the surrounding islands. Stay within metres of the beach in Male’s southern Atoll and have snorkelling and island-hopping adventures on your doorstep. You can find hostels in Male with en-suite bathrooms and modern amenities such as cable TV, air con and free Wi-Fi. Expect perks like a minibar, complimentary tea and coffee, a free laundry service and free breakfast in a Male hostel, which will help make your travelling budget last longer.

Jumhooree Maidhaan (on the north coast) is the main square in Male, where you’ll most likely arrive by boat. A short walk from here is the Islamic Centre, which is home to the city’s Grand Friday Mosque. Slightly west of the main square, you’ll find the market area where vendors sell their products and fishermen dock up to prepare their catch. Also part of Male is the artificial neighbouring island of Hulhumale. Created to support the expansion of the city and house an international airport, its Eastern Beach is worth exploring.

Sultan Park is Male’s green area with ponds and leafy trees. You can even see a slice of the city’s history here with its remnants of The Royal Palace that once stood. Go shopping along Majeedhee Magu street to pick up souvenirs before heading to the eastern edge of the island for its sea-view restaurants. For island adventures, you’ll be a short boat ride away. Villingili is closest at only 20 minutes from Male’s jetty and is home to laid-back luxury, golf courses and the self-claimed world’s smallest mountain (which you can climb!).

Velana International Airport, on Male’s neighbouring island Hulhule, is a short boat ride away. Dhonis shuttle services depart throughout the day and into the night. When you arrive in Male, you’ll be able to walk to most places within an hour or so as the city is quite compact, but there are also taxis available. Boats to the other islands depart from the Villingili Ferry Terminal to the southwest of the island.
