About Portoroz

Portorož on Slovenia's Adriatic coast has shores blanketed with brightly coloured parasols and waters dotted with shiny yachts. Since the 13th century, the small town has been known as a centre of holistic healing. Today, visitors can still immerse themselves in its natural hot springs and relax with therapeutic mud treatments. Offshore, there are plenty of water sports to enjoy, too – be it diving, kitesurfing or stand-up paddleboarding.

Hostels in Portorož include a traditional Slovenian villa with a leafy garden, where guests can relax on sun loungers underneath a towering palm tree. You can expect a Portorož hostel to have handy amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi and towels, plus free city maps to help you get around with ease. Some Portorož hostels have vending machines, as well as tea and coffee-making facilities. Most places are located in the heart of town, mere metres from the promenade and beach.

Portorož is compact and colourful, with a handful of sandy and rocky beaches, a modern promenade lined with bustling casinos, as well as a marina filled with sailing boats. Neighbouring Piran is equally picturesque, with an Old Town full of Gothic architecture, winding passageways and seafood restaurants. Just south of Portorož is the municipality of Seča. One of its chief attractions is the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, which features ancient saltpans that date all the way back to the Middle Ages.

Portorož is home to a number of spas and wellness centres, where reinvigorating treatments combine ancient rituals with modern medical knowledge. Inland, visitors can sign up for gourmet tours of vineyards and olive groves. Alternatively, head out to sea and explore the various coves along the coastline by boat. There's loads to discover below the waves too, such as several WWII shipwrecks, the remains of an ancient Roman road and a lively coral reef.

The closest international airport to Portorož is Trieste Airport in Italy. From here, it's around a 4.5-hour journey to Portorož, first via a train into Trieste's centre and then a scenic bus ride along the coastline. Within Portorož, there are frequent buses, some of which will take you to nearby destinations like Piran, Izola and Koper. Avid cyclists can try tackling the long-distance Parenzana trail, which connects Portorož to neighbouring Strunjan as well as several inland cities on the Istrian peninsula.
