With its lakes, beaches, volcanoes and wildlife, San Martín de los Andes ticks all the boxes for nature lovers. This idyllic town in the Argentinian side of Patagonia is on the doorstep of Lanín National Park and home to the tranquil Lake Lácar, where you can kayak on the clear blue water. You can have a go at skiing in the winter or try your hand at mountain climbing during the warmer seasons.
Take a breather in the great outdoors at a San Martín de los Andes hostel that has its own park, complete with barbecue facilities. La Islita is a 5km walk away from the centre of San Martín de los Andes, and it has a small beach where you could have a picnic. At Plaza San Martín, you can pick up souvenirs at an artisan market. Thrill seekers can amp up the adrenaline with white-water rafting at Río Chimehuín and enjoy some outstanding scenery along the way.
The closest airport to San Martín de los Andes is Aviador Carlos Campos Airport. From there, the town is just an 11-minute taxi ride. Buses run in and out of the Terminal de Ómnibus de San Martín de los Andes. To get around, you can hire a car or go off-road on a mountain bike. There are shuttle buses running to the national park and beyond too.
