Split, nicknamed the ‘Mediterranean Flower’ for its all-year-round great climate, overlooks the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast. Explore the Old Town’s cafes dotted around the cobbled streets, among the historic buildings still standing from their Roman Empire origins. Or chill on one of the white sandy beaches and hop aboard a party boat as night falls. Whether you’re heading to Split to be immersed into Croatian culture or just to enjoy its natural beauty, it’s easy to fall for this peninsular city’s charm.
Split hostels are something special: expect a mixture between budget and modern chic hostels, incredible activities like yoga lessons to improve your ‘downward dog’, boat parties to unleash your party soul, or nightly pub crawls to test Croatian beer. From HOSCARs award winners to independent boutique hostels to traditional youth hostels, Split has it all – see our blog post about best hostels in Split. Dorms? Checked. Privates? Checked. Free Wi-Fi to make sure mum and dad are not worried? Check. Ideas on what to do tonight? Check. Or if you’re disconnecting, the hostel staff will ensure you are never bored or short of ideas of what to see or do.
Most of the hostels in Split are located in the city centre but you can find plenty a little further outside if you are looking for nature and a more chilled experience. If it’s iconic Split you’re after book into a Split hostel on Marmont Street and you’ll be right amongst it, with shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as a theatre and Split’s first ever cinema. It’s also possible to stay right on the edge of The Riva, a spacious promenade with a distinct French influence, and an ideal morning coffee spot. Staying right on the beach, just a stone’s throw from The Old Town, gives you a little bit of everything that Split has to offer.
Start by travelling back in time to the Roman period at the Diocletian’s Palace and the Cathedral of St Domnius and reach the last century at the Meštrović Gallery for incredible sculptures and art collection. The city centre is a gem where getting lost is worth it. If you do, just follow the sound of the waves till the Riva or head to the beach to get a tan! Finally, for amazing views (and pictures!) across the city do not miss Marjan Hill and the Pilgrimage Split.
The city is quite easy to explore on foot. Tip: ask at your hostel’s reception for the walking tour to get orientated with the city and main sights. After that, we promise you won’t have any issue finding your way around. From the city airport of Resnik you will find plenty of options for buses that will take you to the city centre in a blink of an eye! If you are coming by ferry, the only thing you will need is Google maps to find your hostel in Split.
