Property Description

Amakaya Backpackers & Apartments now offers no contact check-in, private rooms, no sharing necessary.

We now do our own fogging after rooms and communal areas have been cleaned using a chlorine and alcohol free product, with no corrosive effects on usual materials during application. After use it simply degrades into harmless water and oxygen as one of the safest forms of disinfection. Remains effective for days after application.

We are still close to the shops, restaurants and pubs of Main Street and 800m from the popular Central Beach.

Welcome to Amakaya Backpackers & Apartments, your ‘home away from home’. The COVID19 virus has caused us to think 'out of the box'. We have shifted the accommodation offering to more private rooms and bunkless dorms as far as possible. Communal areas are still part of the traditional type ‘backpacking’ experience.

We offer a clean, friendly and homely place where you can relax after an exhilarating day in the area. We have hot showers (electric and gas), relaxed atmosphere and comfortable beds.

Enter the main building through our lounge and bar area. The lounge is equipped with satellite TV. Wi-fi internet is available anywhere on the premises.

Our upstairs dining area and balcony offers magnificent views of the Tsitsikamma mountain range, the lagoon and the bay. This is a great place to relax after a busy day's activities or for the early risers to watch the sunrise. Our internet station is also located in this area.

For the ‘private’ traveller or those who want some ‘me’ time, our range of double and twin private rooms and 2 sleeper private dorm is just what you need. For those who do not mind sharing we have a selection of standard and en-suite dorms that sleep 2 and 3 guests respectively in single beds. All our private rooms are fitted with TV sets for your convenience.

All guests have the use of our fully-equipped kitchen facilities, outside braai (BBQ) area, free tea & coffee, free wi-fi,

Parking is on the premises and is accessed by an electric gate.

For the traveller wanting to 'go it alone' our nearby Backpacker Apartments allows you and your partner/family your own space in a fully fitted apartment.

Great facilities, great location. Very safe and clean. Bit quiet but that was due to the off season in the town.

I was there in November and didn't see any other travelers. The hostel had plenty of cool shared spaces, but it was more of a hub for the laborers working in the city, normal from my South African experience, but there's typically a better mix of guests. It's a fine spot for a night, good location for the Garden Route, super safe, plenty of parking, reasonably priced, but I wouldn't stay any longer without a more diverse atmosphere.

Very friendly staff who showed around the hostel and explained everything when I arrived. They were also available if I needed advice about what activities to do. Dorm was comfortable and the kitchen was adequate, if a little understocked.

    Very Good

No proper security lockers in the dorm. Just a free-standing wire cage locker that can be picked up and walked out the door.

The location was centric but not very spectacular as one might expect on the Garden Route. Generally very boring but the service was good.

I really did not like this hostel, first the bed are very narrow, and the top bunk has no fence.. I was so scared flipping over during my sleep. You get a key to open your dorm room, but this one is left wide open all the time.. and there's no locker. It gets very warm during the night. It does smell pretty bad.

Very dirty rooms, a lot of ants in the room. Dirty and stinky bed sheets. The room for 8 people was very small with small windows. Therefore there was less fresh air in the room. Very hot and stinky room. Unfriendly and unhelpful female employees who walked away when we were busy with them. Also but kind and helpful. Contrary, the male employees were very helpful and friendly.
