The highlight of America del Sur Hostel has got to be the view over Lake Argentino from our huge windows – which you can gaze at while eating your free breakfast every morning. We've also got underfloor heating to keep your toes toasty and a fireplace to hang out around in our cosy common area when it's chilly. Our classic Patagonian wooden building is inspired by our surroundings, so it's sure to get you in the mood for an adventurous trip into the nearby Andes.

While it feels like we're in the middle of nature, we're only a 15-minute walk from the centre of El Calafate. El Calafate Bus Terminal is about the same distance away, and it's a 20-minute car journey to El Calafate Airport. We'll arrange a transfer for you if you get in touch in advance. We're close to one of the world's most epic glaciers, Perito Moreno, which you can visit on a guided bus trip. It takes about an hour and a half to get there (it's well worth it!).

Rooms and Dorms

Our private rooms and dorms – some with shared bathrooms and others with en-suites – are cleaned every day. You'll get your bed made, too, for that hotel-like experience. Double rooms have cable TV and a safety deposit box. Linen is included in all rooms, and there's free Wi-Fi so you can Skype home from bed. Lockers help to keep your stuff safe while you're sleeping or out exploring.

Extras and activities

Our hostel is clean and comfy, designed to suit everyone from solo travellers to sociable couples, and people love our friendly, helpful staff. You can order well-priced Argentine grilled meats or Patagonian meals in our restaurant and bar, or cook in our guest kitchen if you prefer. We can store your backpack for you in our luggage room if you're checking out but leaving El Calafate later in the day.

Excellent hostel that is perfect for exploring Calafate and the glaciers. The staff helped me book all our tours before we arrived and made everything easy. Everyone there was really friendly and helpful and always knew what was going on, I like the voucher system for booking. The facilities are great, especially the large kitchen in which multiple groups can cook, and there was a friendly vibe in the common areas. We found the dorms very comfortable and regularly cleaned. It was tough to leave!

Best hostel we have ever stayed at! Really chilled out but great for socialising and meeting new people if you want to. The staff are genuinely outstanding. Elena (we think that’s her name) talked us through activities/tours in the area for an hour after we had checked in. The recommendations were superb and genuinely made our stay. If we could have stayed longer we definitely would have. Comfy dorms with good access to chargers and secure lockers. We loved this hostel so much!!!

This is an excellent base from which to explore Patagonia. Very well connected to services, and the onsite food is amazeballs. In particular, Lusio, Gonzo, and Jess were exceptionally kind and helpful. The place is very clean, and they even make your beds and have a same-day laundry service. The prices are a little higher than other places, but you are definitely getting what you pay for. Amazing place. Also like the resident dogs!

One of the most beautiful hostels I’ve stayed in. The architecture & view are spectacular. I noticed immediately how friendly & helpful the staff were. They can book many different tours for you. The included breakfast had scrambled eggs, bread, cereal, butter & preserves. Coffee was terrible, I don’t recommend trying it – good coffee is hard to find in Argentina, but this was amongst the worst. Dinner is available at the restaurant; the bbq is great value. The house made pasta was yummy.

Really nice common area and restaurant. Comfortable beds and nice showers. Ten minute walk from the town center. Staff is awesome and will help with anything you might need. Would stay here again.

Most expensive hostel I stayed at, but it was nice, modern, clean. It’s a bit big though which makes it harder to meet people and the WiFi is good (which is a plus but everyone’s heads in their phones). Breakfast is good. Only problem is our shower didn’t work and we told them multiple times and it never got fixed. It was too expensive to not have working showers. Nice individual lights and plugs and lockers. Would stay again.

Great staff. Amazing hangout area with a great view and good food. The bathroom is semi open in the bedrooms though which is a bit awkward

This is a fine hostel- maybe I had too high expectations given the high overall rating. I found the accommodation nice but not overly amazing- individual bunk lights and outlets are great. In a 4 bed en-suite, nice to have toilet and shower separate, but the shower is effectively contained within a closet. Location is sort of on its own away from the main center, but it functions as it’s own social scene- v nice.

America del Sur feels more like a hotel than a hostel. Our private room was cleaned everyday. It included fresh towels, shampoo, and soap. The views are amazing. You can have your laundry done, book tours, order lunch boxes, have a drink at the bar, and grab dinner there. All the staff are friendly and helpful. It is pricey for a hostel but like I said, it doesn’t feel like you’re staying at one. The only issue is the drains don’t drain properly. Both shower and sink overflow.

    Very Good

The hostel has a really great social area, and the view of the lake is nice, only a 15 min walk from the bus station. I don’t really think it’s worth the price though, probably one of the most expensive hostels I’ve stayed in, rooms were basic and the shower in my room was awful! One key per room is a bit weird aswell. Staff were friendly though! The America del sur hostel in Buenos Aires is so much better.
