Property Description

Welcome to Bassetto Guesthouse!

We are located in Certaldo, in the belly button of Tuscany, a beautiful region of vineyards, olive groves and medieval towns. This is the place where you will find a true taste of Tuscany and the 'bella vita' in an authentic XIVth century setting.
We are bringing Tuscany country living to the backpacking world. If you need a relaxing break from the busy cities, then we are the place for you. At Bassetto, you will be able to regather your thoughts while you relax next to our pool or swing the afternoon away in a hammock with a glass of wine in hand and then at night, you can take a walk through a garden while being surrounded by fireflies after you have had a dinner in our wine cellar.
Bassetto Guesthouse was formerly a convent of Benedictine monks that was always open to pilgrims passing through. In 1998, our family opened Bassetto Guesthouse again to travellers with the same notion of hospitality as the monks centuries ago. We wanted our guesthouse to be unique in terms of setting and location, a place you would want to return to and somewhere to relax from city life.
We accommodate everyone here, from the lovers on their honeymoon in our private rooms to the solo backpacker in our dorm style rooms. Our private rooms and dorms, are separated from each other across the yard, with their own both kitchens and common areas.
Explore through landscapes sculpted by sunflowers, rolling hills and farms either on foot, bicycle, and horse. Day trips by train are easy from Certaldo to go exploring the big cities to see the splendours of Florence, Siena, Pisa which are mostly an hour away.
We organise and run a number of activities from a fresh pasta cooking class with a local chef to day trips to San Gimignano and wine tour. When the weather is amazing, we can even take you out to Pisa for a day.
Bassetto Guesthouse will always make you feel like you won’t want to leave and with our friendly English speaking staff who are always able to help. We are situated in the perfect place to experience the real Tuscany.

There is something for everyone here!

We also offer a free pick up (5pm) and drop off (9:30am) service to Certaldo train station. More details will be sent to you in the confirmation email.

Please note, due to a tourism levy in the region, we have to charge a 1€ per night, per person tax.

We look forward to seeing you in Certaldo. View House Rules

A home from home in the rolling Tuscan hills. Bassetto is a sprawling complex of old buildings, fascinating in itself. The staff are great, and more like friends after a day or two. Comfy beds, blankets for warmth (you might need them out of season), kitchen for cooking and long chats into the evening, over wine and guitar playing. It's also a good base for exploring Florence, San Gimignano and Siena, though I was happy just mooching about Certaldo and the countryside around.

Came across the Basetto while I was looking for a place to stay in Florence. Drawn in by all the positive reviews, I decided to give it a go. The amazing staff offer a pick up from the train station and before the end of the evening I had decided to extend my stay. Jo and the rest of the staff are incredible, welcoming and unbelievably hospitable. I truly felt like I was at home and surrounded by family during my stay. Basetto holds a special place in my heart & I look forward to my next visit.

Great vibe. Rustic buildings. Lots to see in the area and plenty of places to go for a day trip (pisa, florence, cinque terre, etc) Jo was amazing and super helpful. Rest of the staff were also super nice. This place was a very welcome stay after being in Rome for a few nights. Would recommend!!

Staying here is an experience! Quiet, beautiful, friendly and lovely staff who genuinely cares about your wellbeing and experience (Jo, you're the best!). Lovely place to unwind and experience a slower Italian lifestyle in the Tuscan hills. But note--the hostel itself is not cushy. It can get quite cold at night and the wifi doesn't really work, but there are hot showers and hammocks outside to read in, and that's more the reason why you come to Bassetto. P.S. Cooking class is an AMAZING value.

Really enjoyed my stay here! It’s a really unique experience to stay in a 13th century monastery in the Tuscan countryside and if you’re looking for some chill time in between Rome and Florence then this is a must! The town itself is small but nice to explore and nearby San Gimignano and the vineries are definitely worth a visit. Thanks to Jo for being a great host and sharing her amazing chocolate cake with us! PS- they have amazing warm showers!

Great hostel for meeting people. I came just as they were starting again for the season so there wasn’t as much to do and it was freezing cold at night but I can only imagine how beautiful and fun it is in the summer!
