The Leo Courtyard is much more than just a hostel with a great location. This famous Ming/Qing Dynasty courtyard has over 350 years of history and is a government protected structure. It is a main feature of all historic tours in the area, with visitors (non-guests) having to pay an entrance fee. The courtyard is most famous for being a former socialising venue for Beijing's rich elite, and sometimes even the emperor himself. In the evenings, hostesses would serve traditional meals and drinks, with musicians & performers in the background.

The courtyard is also famous for its romantic love story, where the famous General Cai-E and the beautiful hostess Xiao-Feng-Xian first met and fell in love. In fact, their love story is so famous that even a national TV series has been made about it!

The Leo Courtyard is now open for guests to stay. So during your stay in Beijing, don't just stay in a normal hostel, come join us and soak up the ancient atmosphere, and have a truly historic stay!

The Leo Courtyard is the larger sister hostel of the well-known nearby Leo Hostel (recommended by the Lonely Planet for over 4 years now). Our location is a short walk from Tiananmen Square and the subway. We are located in a hutong (ancient streets) area, with a residential quarter and market quarter, so there's lots to see and do (we can give you a free local area map when you arrive). We are a large hostel with lots of space to spread out, so it is quite a relaxed atmosphere amongst our guests - ideal to 'take a break from travelling' and lounge around with other guests. Having said that, with our famous Leo Movie World (hundreds of classic and new movies to watch) and our bar/restaurant (with beer/cocktail specials), there's also a chance to meet new friends and make your own party!

As we are a large hostel, we are one of the cheapest hostels in the area, offering basic and standard budget rooms, and discounts can also be offered to long term guests. Please read about our facilities & services below and then take a look at our photos to get a feel of the hostel. We hope to see you very soon for a truly historic stay!

the staff at leo courtyard was super friendly , helped us multiple times, you can easily communicate in English. The room with 4 beds was fine , we used common bathrooms which were clean all the time as well as toilets. the location is amazing,in walking distance of forbidden city. Dont understand the bad reviews , people from 10 beds rooms could use the common bathrooms too. it is true that you cant really lock the room, but there are boxes for your personal items with locks provided inside.

Nothing flash. Super simple. Quiet area. Still BYO ear plugs as my room was near old squeaky cooling fans. No drinking water on site, not even bottled for purchase. Lockers don't work. Staff didn't explain to me where facilities are, my room or that lockers in my room are not functioning. Staff cannot help with information for getting around. Showers & toilets are clean. As only one roll on the wall it runs out pretty quickly and nonevare around to replace it readily. Broken door.

We actually booked Leo Courtyard but upon arrival we were told that the heater was spoilt and we had to move to Leo Hostel. Good this is that a lower rate was offered to us. The room's renovation is rather old and the interior is not well furnished (holes and cracks in the walls) hence the room looked dirty. Slippers was provided hence we didn't pay much attention to the floor cleanliness. Bed is clean and we really appreciate that the hot water worked well in the cold weather.

Needed a cheap place to sleep on short notice and that's what this was. You get what you pay for - large parts of the building seemed to be basically still a building site when I arrived and parts of the room were shoddily constructed or falling apart. Also wasn't very clean. Would recommend spending a dollar or two more per night for a cleaner place.

Not impressed with the dorms, very run down and quite dirty, with holes in the walls through to the neighbouring rooms. Bedding was relatively clean, although stained and torn. Only toilets available are squatters, which were dirty without doors or privacy. Only 3 showers for the the whole hostel, also not that clean. However, the hostel has a sociable atmosphere and convenient central location close to subway station. V. friendly and helpful staff! Highly recommend the Ancient Wall Tour

Avoid-Stayed 3 nights-I could look past the fact it was cheap BUT the bathroom was never cleaned once, no toilet roll provided-thought that would be a given? WiFi hardly worked. The staff don’t talk English-that isn’t a problem-we are in China but couldn’t help me navigate a Chinese website either. Directions say to look out for another hostel name-didn’t see either name. Bed has a 2-3cm mattress. Not comfortable at all. No room to move in the dorm. Noise throughout night-hairdryers

Front desk staff were extremely slow, not very attentive or understanding. The one person on staff to greet me when I arrived in the morning didn't speak any English at all. Rooms were small and cold, bathrooms were unbearably small, smelly and wet. The whole place was loud and kind of gross honestly.

Very Very bad place! The bathroom floor was broken, the smell was awful. But still, it is the cheapest and near to downtown Beijing and the metro station. I was in a private room, and had like a 50 year old bed and desk. The bed was so noisy and the desk was meh. I asked for a chair to be able to sit and work on the desk, and they told me, "NO CHAIR" . It was like the one thing that they can say in English. The staff at the reception were good and recommended me places and were very nice.
