The Leo Courtyard is much more than just a hostel with a great location. This famous Ming/Qing Dynasty courtyard has over 350 years of history and is a government protected structure. It is a main feature of all historic tours in the area, with visitors (non-guests) having to pay an entrance fee. The courtyard is most famous for being a former socialising venue for Beijing's rich elite, and sometimes even the emperor himself. In the evenings, hostesses would serve traditional meals and drinks, with musicians & performers in the background.

The courtyard is also famous for its romantic love story, where the famous General Cai-E and the beautiful hostess Xiao-Feng-Xian first met and fell in love. In fact, their love story is so famous that even a national TV series has been made about it!

The Leo Courtyard is now open for guests to stay. So during your stay in Beijing, don't just stay in a normal hostel, come join us and soak up the ancient atmosphere, and have a truly historic stay!

The Leo Courtyard is the larger sister hostel of the well-known nearby Leo Hostel (recommended by the Lonely Planet for over 4 years now). Our location is a short walk from Tiananmen Square and the subway. We are located in a hutong (ancient streets) area, with a residential quarter and market quarter, so there's lots to see and do (we can give you a free local area map when you arrive). We are a large hostel with lots of space to spread out, so it is quite a relaxed atmosphere amongst our guests - ideal to 'take a break from travelling' and lounge around with other guests. Having said that, with our famous Leo Movie World (hundreds of classic and new movies to watch) and our bar/restaurant (with beer/cocktail specials), there's also a chance to meet new friends and make your own party!

As we are a large hostel, we are one of the cheapest hostels in the area, offering basic and standard budget rooms, and discounts can also be offered to long term guests. Please read about our facilities & services below and then take a look at our photos to get a feel of the hostel. We hope to see you very soon for a truly historic stay!

Great little historic hostel! No frills no fuss and right in the centre of Beijing. This hostel is perfect for people who want to come back to a quite and comfortable room after a long day of exploring.

Its the best place if you want to experience real chinese life and close to everything to see actually. The dorms are bit uncomfortable, beds are too close and room is small. People work there are amazing. Overall i am truly happy with the hostel :)

There were some things mentioned in the description that were not there like the restaurant, but overall it was a great experience. It was about a 15 minute walk to some popular tourist spots like the Forbidden City, but still in a quiet area where you can escape the large crowds of people.

    Very Good

    03 Jan 2020
Was in a room with 3 young Chinese men who were all looking for jobs and had been living there for 4 months. One very nice lad who spoke English quite well and he was interesting but still not a very good atmosphere in the Hostel. Not many people travelling. However the Leo Hostel up the road from this one had plenty of people travelling from different countries and had a better atmosphere.

The best thing about this place is location. Otherwise the staff are a little disorganised and slow to communicate. Lots of things seemed to go wrong while we were there. But if youre just looking for a comfortable bed for the night so you can exlore all day, then this place does the job.

The rooms were very dirty and smelly. The bathroom had terrible mold and poor ventilation. I was shocked by how poor the facilities were, especially considering all of the high reviews. There are better places to stay, wouldn’t recommend. A couple minor suggestions: shelves and curtains on the bunk beds would be a huge improvement. The man at the front desk was very kind to come find us and help us find the hostel. However, other staff members weren’t helpful.

Our room had mold and was basically unlivable. We checked out after one night despite booking 5 nights there. There are beautiful hotels nearby that are the same price. I recommend the Beijing Package nearby.

Leo hostel is 5 minutes away and is at a better location than this. 90% people I noticed staying here were locals and was not very clean. I decided to change to leo hostel and it was a wise decision. Made a lot of international friends there

The receptionist was lost the whole time. Made lots of mistakes with registering, keys, etc. This hostel is pretty far from things and hard to find. Beds were not that SOFT as described. Not much of an atmosphere.
