Overview

We've kept the gorgeous stained-glass windows of Belford Hostel – which used to be a church – and added a whole lot more besides. Think free Wi-Fi, a lively bar (for hanging out with new travel mates) and an outdoor barbecue. You'll find Scottish and sporty memorabilia all over the common areas, from a caricature of Braveheart to artwork showing the National Anthem's opening verse. We've also got a TV for watching films and live sport, along with a pool table if you feel up to starting a mini-tournament.

Location

We're in a pretty central location in Edinburgh's West End, close to old Dean Village and the Water of Leith. You can get to the hostel easily from Edinburgh Haymarket station – it's about a 15-minute walk away. If you're heading to us from Edinburgh Airport, jump on express bus 100 to Haymarket Station. It's around a 30-minute journey.

Rooms and Dorms

You'll have a bunk with two plug sockets in your mixed or female-only dorm – useful for charging a couple of things at once. There's also a free locker for keeping your stuff safe (don't forget your padlock). For a small charge, we'll also store your backpack for you on the last day if you're not leaving Edinburgh till late. We've got private rooms, too, some with en-suites. Linen's included whichever space you book.

Extras and activities

Our free city maps are on hand to help you get around and we've got a book exchange for a little light reading in between checking out Edinburgh Castle or strolling up the Royal Mile. Want to save your pennies? There's a kitchen for cooking up some grub (ideal when you're not trying out local delicacies like deep-fried Mars bars!). Making your own tea and coffee using our facilities also helps the budget stretch a bit further. Check in is between 2pm and 3am.

This was a really cool hostel! Good vibe, nice staff, and it was warm and quiet at night. Comfortable beds and they also have laundry service available. I would recommend this place to people staying in Edinburgh.

An absolutely fantastic place to celebrate hogmanay and new years eve. It was a cool hostel in a good location being on a quiet street but still close to town. During hogmanay it was a good place to stay as a solo traveler as everyone met in the onsite bar before going to the street party. Only downfall is that the rooms got a bit too hot at night. The staff were nice and friendly.

Great hostel and great price! It was really great to sleep in a hostel located in a church. My main comment would concern the fact that it was cold in the halls (the room was okay).

Building was characteristically interesting. Good use of space. Bit scruffy/worn but not unpleasantly so. Fantastic kitchen and eating space. Bedding could do with being updated.

    Very Good

I enjoyed my stay at Belford and lucked out a bit; I was supposed to be in a 6-person female dorm, but ended up being the only person the whole night! However, the building is quite loud. Some people left around 4 AM and every noise they made seemed to echo. I also had to be up early so it wasn't a big deal, but my guess is it's probably difficult to get a good night's sleep here. That being said, the facilities are nice and everything was clean.

The hostel is pretty, and might be fine in the summer, but it felt like there was no heat except in the room itself. The female showers were in the basement, and the stairs were so cold. Room wasn’t much warmer either, we are from cold climates, and wore layers to bed to stay warm. Reception was closed from 3-8, which forced us to miss breakfast and get an Uber because we had to be across town by 8:20, and had to hustle to not miss our bus, as we didn’t want to lose the £10 deposit for 1 night.
