We've kept the gorgeous stained-glass windows of Belford Hostel – which used to be a church – and added a whole lot more besides. Think free Wi-Fi, a lively bar (for hanging out with new travel mates) and an outdoor barbecue. You'll find Scottish and sporty memorabilia all over the common areas, from a caricature of Braveheart to artwork showing the National Anthem's opening verse. We've also got a huge screen for watching films and live sport, along with a pool table and dartboard if you feel up to starting a mini-tournament.

We're in a pretty central location in Edinburgh's West End, close to old Dean Village and the Water of Leith. You can get to the hostel easily from Edinburgh Haymarket station – it's about a 15-minute walk away. If you're heading to us from Edinburgh Airport, jump on express bus 100 to Haymarket Station. It's around a quarter of an hour's drive.

Rooms and Dorms

You'll have a bunk with two plug sockets in your mixed or female-only dorm – useful for charging a couple of things at once. There's also a free locker for keeping your stuff safe and we'll store your backpack for you on the last day if you're not leaving Edinburgh till late. We've got private rooms, too, some with en-suites. Linen's included whichever space you book.

Extras and activities

Our free city maps are on hand to help you get around and we've got a book exchange for a little light reading in between checking out Edinburgh Castle or strolling up the Royal Mile. Want to save your pennies? There's a kitchen for cooking up some grub (ideal when you're not using our vending machines or trying out local delicacies like deep-fried Mars bars!). Making your own tea and coffee using our facilities also helps the budget stretch a bit further.

I stayed here with my girlfriend and I can make sure that, if you're going to Edinburgh, this is one of the best places to stay. Cheap, clean and comfortable at all times!

I love this place! Just one thing, the top bunk bed is too low for me to sit there, so I went down to kitchen and lounge, which opens 24 hours to do Internet stuff. Staff is great and really unique place!

Very cool place, the hostel is beautiful! It was very quiet when I was there but there is a bar and a beautiful commun place, so it’s easy to make friends. Awesome kitchen, everything was clean and the staff was very nice and helpful. Also, really nice location! Walking distance from everything, but not located too much in the centre, so it’s quiet.

The Slovakian and South African receptionists are amazing and really caring. The atmosphere is nice and welcoming. Obviously the facilities are pretty basic, but still, the beds were comfortable. Just behind the hostel there is an amazing village to visit :)

The converted church is cool, though not overly obvious. Sound carries, and the door locks create slamming sounds. The 10pm quiet rule is not strictly enforced. As long as you are a heavy sleeper/don't mind sound it's a fine. The common area in the basement and is alright, but not conducive to meeting fellow travellers. The kitchen area is great: big, clean, and well appointed. Showers a bit dirty, but everything else was very clean. In a quieter part of town but still walking distance to all.

I don't know whose idea this hostel was but it's questionable. It's a 200 year old church converted into a hostel. Walls are just sheetrock thrown up around existing structures like columns. There's open vents and you can hear literally every noise possible. Can't open windows so no ventilation. It was HOT. There was a window in the ceiling directly above my bed which was kind of weird. All showers are in the basement. It's far from anything interesting. Has a kitchen, small bar, wifi was okay.
