Overview

Here at The Cambie Hostel – Gastown, our decades of experience mean we know how to look after our guests. Downstairs in the city's oldest bar – The Cambie – you can meet people from all over the world, from artists to professionals to here-for-the-night travellers, and listen to live bands each week. Upstairs there's a kitchen zone in the common room – sink into the comfy sofa to watch some TV. It's a favourite spot to connect to our free Wi-Fi and post pics from the night before.

Location

Find us in the historic heart of Vancouver – Gastown. From the airport, take the SkyTrain for 30 minutes to Waterfront Station and we're a 4-minute walk away. You can also jump on the Airporter, which stops at the Pan Pacific Hotel in downtown Vancouver – 10 minutes from us on foot. To explore the city, the Granville metro station is only a 10-minute walk away or, to go further out, you can get a train from Waterfront Station. Discover nearby Granville Island (a 30-minute walk) and order some award-winning beer from Canada's first microbrewery, Island Brewery Co.

Rooms and Dorms

Your room has essentials like fresh bed linen, plus an en-suite or shared bathroom with hot showers – you can hire a towel from reception too. Stay in a mixed or female-only dorm for a social atmosphere or a private room if you're a couple or fancy a bit of seclusion. You can store your bag in an under-the-bed locker, just remember to add 'padlock' to your packing list.

Extras and activities

Start your day with a discounted hot breakfast down in the bar. There's also an ATM on site so you can keep your cash flow topped up. Before heading out, talk to our staff to get the lowdown on the must-visit areas – we'll sort you out with a free city map too. But our most popular team member has to be Oreo the cat!

Great hostel, great location even though it is close to east Hastings felt super safe. Staff always super kind and friendly. Stayed in a private room with a fan, heard the dorms on the first floor didn’t not have fans sadly as there is no central air. Added bonus with the 40% coupons for the bar below!

Nice hostel joined to their own bar in a cool part of town. Walking distance to a lot of touristy things as well as 2 skytrain lines so easy to get around. The hostel itself is a little run down but seems organized.

    Very Good

The staff were lovely and everyone staying was friendly. The main cons were the lack of air conditioning- luckily I was alone in my room because it was nearly imposed to sleep it was so hot. Other con is it's proximity to East Hastings, something out of the hostels control. It's very jarring and unsettling and didn't make me want to wander around alot at night.

Lowest priced hostel in Vancouver. Good location. Old building - no a/c or fan in dorm room and windows didn't open so it was really hot and stuffy. Need better ventilation.

    Good

This is my second time staying at the Cambie. One major issue, which seems to effect other hostels in BC too, is that they’ve decided to start letting older, long-term, seemingly out-of-work (homeless?) people stay there. It kills the atmosphere and is contrary to the spirit of backpacking. Maybe they did this to make money when there were no travellers due to COVID, but they really need to stop, or else just become a homeless shelter. As always, Danielle at reception is great.

Pros: there's a restaurant right under the hostel, you can cook your food in the kitchen/pit in fridge, walk distance to downtown/water front, cute cat und Floor 1 Cons: you can't lock the windows, our curtains were broken, the floor in the room was dirty/old, everywhere homeless people as soon as you step out of the hostel

This place was a disaster, the beds were the only thing that was great but that's because they upgraded us for free beyond that it reminds me of going to my university dive bar. The atmosphere was poor with nobody chilling or hanging out in the common room, nobody is ever at the desk when you have questions, it takes 5-10 mins to get hot water in the shower. The rooms and hallway have this musty smell, the bar under it is super loud, and random people playing music every night at 4 am
