Lovely hostel and great staff who really cared about the hostel and kept it clean. Rooms were spacious and beds had curtains to pull across to shut yourself off from the rest of the room if you wanted to sleep early/ late etc. The facilities were great, sporting a hot tub, multiple lounge areas and lots of kitchen space (although you barely need to cook yourself since there is a free breakfast (including pancakes/ waffles!!) and soup every evening). Wifi reliable considering remote location!!

Beautiful place, staff were very helpful and great value for money. Just a shame the hot tub was out of order when we stayed.

Had a good stay. Could do with an overall makeover as it looks pretty old but was mostly clean. Had problems with bedbugs in one room but was moved and the room was closed to visitors, hopefully they manage to get it sorted before it spreads. Alright breakfast and soup in the evening. Friendly staff!

Initial impressions were very good. The guy working there the night we arrived had free hot choc and muffins for everyone, however the girl with the headphones on the next day didn't bother making any hot choc even though it's supposed to be daily, she also was very dismissive when I asked about the spa pool which was out of order. Good breakfast with pancakes and waffles. Old buildings which needed a dust and were cold. Beds were comfortable. A little work and could have great potential.

Nice place overall, free soup, hot tub. Like everyone else says, the rooms are moldy and need some deep cleaning though.

We stayed in a private room. This is both the most expensive and worst hostel I have stayed in in NZ. The room was outdated, not been refurbished for at least 30 years. This you could deal with but the bedding and pillows also had probably gone a similar time without being washed- if there was vacancy elsewhere in the town we would have left. If there was a photo upload I would show you the state of the pillows. Truly disgusting!!

Old, smelly, molded building. Even the bed smelled like feet. Breakfast and soup for dinner was a plus.

This hostel wasn't great. The only positives I have for it is the location, the free breakfast and soup. Staff were ok for the most part. When I was checked in, the key was chucked on the counter in front of me, the whole process took about a minute and verged on rude. I paid well over the odds for my bed in the 9 bed dorm, aptly named the stables! The room smelled terrible, there was no soap in the bathroom! The whole place was "rustic" being nice. It left a lot to be desired. I won't be back
