Very great hostel in Chicago. Good entrance, lobby, eating space, kitchen (seems to be a long-stay visitor) and vending machine. The room was good. Annoying things are generally midnight roommates (especially when travelling in a big city) and huge snoring next to me as usual although it is not due to this hostel.

5 stars for everything but cleanliness. The common areas were clean and tidy but our room smelled horrible. It was a bad combination of body odor and cigarettes even though the rooms were supposed to be non-smoking. The linens could have been cleaner, I’m thinking they use a weak or watered down detergent, and the floors clearly needed to be mopped. I’m thinking the body odor smell was coming from the floor, the previous guest must have had sweaty feet. Overall, I’d still recommend it.

Aside from the bed itself, everything about the place was top notch! Bathrooms were clean and spacious. The kitchen and dining area were large. Free popcorn (freshly popped). The location was in a seemingly safe residential area, about a 5 minute walk to the nearest train station to take you towards downtown chicago. Bed was slightly uncomfortable, but after a long day of walking around chicago, I fell asleep instantly regardless. I would definitely stay here again!

The hostel is in a great location, between downtown and Wrigley Field. There are many bars and restaurants within walking distance. The women's showers dont have anywhere to store clothes or towels in them so you have to get a little creative when you're getting out. Also, the washrooms are separated by gender on opposite sides of the floor, so if you are roomed on the wrong side, you have to walk out of your corridor, through the lobby and into the next corridor.

I guess for the price is good. The only thing I disliked there was no air conditioning in the bedroom I was in. It was hot and humid at times. Also the women’s shower there was always hair in the floor and a bit dirty. over all the breakfast is perfect and more than enough. The beds are not the comfiest neither the pillows but it works. towels are provided which is a plus and you have vending machines Incase you need a snack or whatever.

The hostel is generally great - especially the common areas. The only thing was the bathrooms with showers were not that clean, definitely something to work on to improve the whole stay. The location is not in the immediate center but I would say in a really nice residential area with some cool hotshops (not *too* many tourists as in downtown).

Lovely building and nice personal. Amazing neighbourhood! Awful bathrooms and awful ventilation system (windows could not be open and with 18 degrees Centigrade outside heating was on!!). Breakfast not enough for everybody (shortage of bread!): if you wanted to have at least a couple of toasts you had to go right after they started serving.

Very small room ( pictures show bigger space), a bit uncomfortable bed, sadly poor breakfast ( one day no bread - staff answered "it is finished, what can I do?". Bathrooms and room could be cleaned more properly. The rest was great: location was great, it was relatively quiet at night, front desk staff was nice felt safe and secure.

The hostel is located in a nice, quiet residential area which you can easily walk or take the metro to neat places. The hostel was stylish and had keyed access to all areas of the building. The atmosphere was alright, but it seems to be better geared towards groups who wanted somewhere they could stay for a reasonable price and hang out together. Not much of vibe for travelers wanting to meet or have a quiet moment. The rooms were infrequently cleaned with dirty linen and garbage left for days.

Chicago Getaway Hostel says

I think we offer some great extras to our guests, like our continental buffet breakfast, which includes coffee, fresh fruit, cereal, breakfast breads and more. We also offer discounted museum and attraction tickets, bike rentals, and daily social events. We also give you a bonus of one free meal weekly. In the summer it's a BBQ and in winter a warm meal.
What a lot of people don't know about our hostel is that it was originally built in 1928 as part of the Eleanor Foundation in order to provide affordable housing for women coming into the city and entering the workforce. Nearly 84 years later, we're still offering affordable lodging in an amazing and historic neighbourhood.
In my opinion, there's three places that you can't leave Chicago Getaway Hostel without checking out. The first is Kingston Mines a legendary Blues bar located a few blocks away. Secondly, you can't leave Chicago without trying Lou Malnati's deep dish pizza. Thirdly, you haven't lived until you've had a Chicago hot dog from Chicago's Dog House. These three places will make your trip unforgettable. Mathew, General Manager
