Discovery Melbourne is currently under renovation to make us even more awesome. Some of our facilities may be closed temporarily.

We're a hostel that's just as cool as the city itself. We have a rooftop patio (one of the biggest in the area), so you can settle down on a sunlounger or fire up the barbecue. Downstairs, our spacious guest lounges are havens for hanging out, and the kitchen's set up so you can prep everything from snacks to three-course meals. Need to buy ingredients? Join in on one of our free city tours – or grab a free map – and we'll show you the top shopping spots.

You'll find us right by the open-air Queen Victoria Markets – the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere – as well as fun bars and pretty parks. We're a 9-minute walk away from the central business district and around 20 minutes on foot from the Skybus coach terminal, where the public transport from Melbourne Airport will drop you off. The ride in takes about 20 minutes.

Rooms and Dorms

Save cash for those flat whites in Melbourne's on-trend cafés by staying in one of our mixed or female-only dorms, or splash out on a private room. They all come with cushy 9-inch-thick mattresses and en-suite bathrooms, and linen's always included in your booking. If you want to keep anything important under lock and key, come and ask to use our safety deposit boxes at the 24-hour reception desk.

Extras and activities

We have capped free Wi-Fi in the lobby, and you can get unlimited internet for an extra charge. If you're staying in Melbourne long-term, check out our jobs board to find your ideal role. The laundry facilities will come in handy when your boss-to-be calls you up for an interview. Feeling tired after your first shift or day's exploring? We have an elevator to take you up to bed.

The hostel is really nice, the common space are really big and the cleaners often cleans the rooms and common areas. The main problem of this hostel is the security !!! The food in the kitchen disappear almost every times and if you notify the reception they don’t anything. Same with the rooms, few times it happen that people enter in the rooms just to sleep and then go early morning without paying the room. It not secure at all, that anybody can enter the room without having keys !!!!

I enjoyed my stay at Discovery Melbourne. As I arrived to check it, they had some wonderful music playing in the background. I couldn't help myself to sing along and patiently groove as I wait to be served at the desk.

    Very Good

Great location, friendly staff, clean rooms. Having renovation work currently which is a bit disrupting. One thing that really bothered me is the use of single use plastic in the kitchen, plastic cutlery & cups & lack of recycling - could be doing more for this planet!! But overall good value for money.

This hostel has decent security and decent kitchen. However there are a lot of things missing in the kitchen and the atmosphere is similar to what you'd expect in a prison. Long concrete hallways with cell-like rooms. I realize that the hostel is going through later stages of renovation, and it has a lot of potential. However at the current state I didn't really enjoy my stay. If you're looking for something central and aren't planning on spending a lot of time in the hostel then it's decent.

They are currently renovating. No where on the website do they announce that there are facilities as marketed on the website. When I mentioned that they wouldn’t even offer a discount. Also construction noise early in the morning ...

The people staying there were very nice. But some of them were disgusting. They don’t know how to use both rooms at all. The kitchen was big and easy to move around but it gets quite dirty with food scraps at times. If you can stand dirty restrooms and are looking for somewhere to get to know people for cheap prices this is the place for you.

Reception area is very dirty and the hostel itself is very secluded making it hard to find. You’ll feel like someone is about to sell you heroin as you walk down the alley way. It’s a pleasant surprise to reach the dorm floors and realize the place isn’t so dirty after all, at least not on my level 1. The rooms were clean as well although a tight squeeze. The doors are really loud and the hallways echo so I do not recommend if you’re a light sleeper. The beds are so comfy and there’s sockets.

If you want to try out a prison for a night, then this is your place. I understand that its cheap, but I have stayed in places cheaper than this and not felt like I was in the latest episode of Wentworth. The room was very basic. Beds squeaked and kept the room awake. The shower was cold and spat water everywhere, and with no where to hang my clothes they were made very wet. The "Common" area / hall was the most uncomfortable place Ive ever seen This place needs a serious upgrade, Never again.

Not a fussy or likely person to complain normally, but this place was quite a dump to be fair. No hot water or even cold water for showers during the key times of the day 8am-2pm. No electricity to charge your phone most of the time. All of which I was only informed of after I had payed the fee to stay already. Not whats advertised in the pictures. I would say stay somewhere/anywhere else but here.
