Hostelworld says

Hostelworld guests have had high praise for Duo Housing DC, saying 'the staff are really friendly and the atmosphere fosters a welcoming community'. This hostel has a very home-like atmosphere, with free Wi-Fi and internet, a study area, free towels and even a guest phone. We like their no-shoes policy, contributing to a clean, secure, friendly house.

Property Description

Everything is all brand-new - we've got new bathrooms and a new media room!

We also have the cleanest rooms in DC because we have a policy of no shoes in the house and no food/eating in the guest rooms.

Check out what makes Duo Housing the #1 choice for students, travellers, and interns!

Interning or moving to Washington DC? Just exploring the United States Capitol? We're convenient to public transportation. This is the perfect housing alternative for international students and interns in any of the cities we service!

We're located just 15 minutes to the US Capitol and just five minutes to Chinatown and are surrounded by cafés, stores, shopping, and nightlife.

There's also free coffee and tea as well as free kitchen utensils if you want to cook for yourself.

Room rates include free bed linen, free bath towels, free maid service and a free lockable locker - bring your own lock!

There's also free Wi-Fi, free Internet, free computer usage, free use of our Nintendo Wii and free house events!

...and, of course, free meeting new friends. :) The big city is intimidating to new guests, but you can plan on making some great new friends. Many of our guests end up becoming friends and getting apartments together!

Duo Housing is designed to encourage interaction among our guests as much as possible. Our rooms are shared, as are the bathroom facilities, kitchens, and living rooms. The living room (or social room) has a huge 42' flat-screen TV, all the premium cable TV channels, DVD player, and a phone to call anywhere in the continental US.

Need some down time? There's a separate quiet study area, too.

What makes us different? The biggest difference is our hostels were started by people just like you and are run by people with needs just like yours. So instead of coming home from school or your internship to an impersonal warehouse of beds, you feel like you're coming home - you're staying with people who fast become your friends; you cook with people from all over the world; you get to learn and experience the city first-hand with friends.

Our friendly staff are on duty 24 hours a day to help you with anything you might need, whether it's directions or restaurant suggestions. This also means there's no lockout, you can check in anytime and there's security on the property 24/7.

Please note that we do not accept guests under the age of 18. All guests in a party must be over the age of 18.

Duo Housing and all affiliates are not responsible for any actions of the guests and their parties during their stay.

Overview

With cosy rustic décor, free breakfasts and friendly staff, our Duo Housing DC hostel is a real home base in the US capital. Take it easy with a game of chess in our cosy lounge, or make the most of the free Wi-Fi to catch up with family in our study. Our rooftop deck is the place to be on sunny days, with views across the DC skyline – make sure to snap a selfie with your brand-new travel companions.

Location

We're in the centre of Washington DC, just a 20-minute walk from the White House. Our neighbourhood – Logan Circle – is one of the trendiest areas around. 14th Street is just a few blocks away, where you'll find craft beer bars, hip restaurants and boutiques selling quirky home goods. If you fly into Washington Dulles International Airport, you can get to us in just over an hour using public transport.

Rooms and Dorms

We've got three types of mixed dorms: basic, superior and deluxe. The superior rooms are in a separate, more peaceful building, and the deluxe ones have their own private bathrooms and kitchens attached. Every room is set up with free bed linen, towels and maid service. You also get your own locker – just bring along a padlock to keep your stuff secure. You might want to pack some slippers, too: we have a 'no shoe' policy so you can always enjoy a clean crash pad.

Extras and activities

Every Sunday we have a pizza and movie night – drop in for some much-needed downtime during your trip. On top of serving up breakfast, we also have free coffee and tea all day. Grab a mug of strong brew and a novel from our book exchange for a chilled-out afternoon. With our late check-out, you can sleep in if you want to so you're geared up to discover DC's super chic cocktail bars.

    Fabulous

The staff and guests were friendly and location good. The value for a clean bed to sleep in was good. But some small things: the light bulbs in the bathroom and bedroom were very low wattage so it felt a little gloomy at night. I was able to see that the shower on the 2nd floor of the second building had mold growing. The shower door did not slide and close easily. Contrary to what was promoted, there were no lockers in the second building for me to secure my things while I went out.

    Very Good

The overall atmosphere was great but a few things let the hostel down. The showers weren’t very clean and powerful and the beds were crammed into tiny rooms. The living area was very open and friendly and the free breakfast was ok as the only option would be pancakes. The staff were very helpful and polite when they were needed.

Good hostel in a good part of DC. Just 15 mins walk from the Mall which is ideal.

The price was low thereby accommodating those with low expectations. So some security was appreciated but unfortunately the size and clientele one could not be more choosy over. A small ten bed co-dorm room with several snorers and shoeless rules made for a very uncomfortable stay.

Overall a neutral experience, but would avoid to stay again. Pros: good location, simple breakfast, bathrooms fairly clean. Cons: smelly bed sheets with stains; no power sockets by the top beds (couldn't charge my phone, unless risking it being stolen); bad air ventilation in rooms; no prior information about the requirement of taking shoes off; no locks for lockers (again, no prior information about that). Generally, low value for the money paid. Shout out to Yasmin for being very friendly.

For a variety of reasons, Duo Housing did not meet my expectations. Complimentary breakfast was borderline misleading. The hostel offered pancakes and lemonade. That's not breakfast; that's just sugar. The staff seemed bothered when I had questions and requests. Security was more of a nuisance than it was effective. I ended my reservation early and went to a nearby hostel I had stayed previously that more than met my needs.

I slept in the basement A1 with 12 bunk beds. There was no air conditioning or ventilation. It was so hot I couldn't sleep. My neighbors in the other bunk beds were all tossing and turning. I asked the the overnight front desk person to turn on the air conditioner. He said he couldn't. It could only be authorized by the owner and he was now asleep and didn't like to be like to be woken up. The owner of this place is a miser that he keeps AC off or low. But we suffer. So inhumane.

Duo Housing DC says

I think what really makes us special is our extras, particularly the comprehensive map tour given by one of our friendly, multi-lingual, knowledgeable resident assistants. They give a lot of great suggestions for things like their favourite Smithsonian Museums, their favourite places to eat inexpensively or where to get the most beautiful photos of the skyline. We also give each guest a house tour to acquaint them with our property in an effort to make them feel comfortable and welcome.
We strive to make this each guest's home-away-from-home and endeavour to make guests feel at home, as if they're staying with friends rather than in an impersonal environment.
The National Mall, where all of the Smithsonian Museums and national monuments are located, is about a 20-minute walk from our property. Personally I recommend that all of our guests make sure to stop by Georgetown Cupcake-they won a national cupcake contest!
We have activities planned for almost every day of the week, like Movie Night, American Football Night, Bingo Night, etc. Our staff have also compiled a list of fun things to do and fun places to visit that we've arranged by neighbourhood. Plus there's an announcement board with a daily-updated list of fun things going on in town. This always includes something cultural, something for food and drinks and something just for fun.
