Overview

Our best-loved feature here at El Arsenal Hostel Boutique? It's got to be our outdoor pool for those laid-back afternoons in the sun. We've got air con, too! Breakfast's included and there's a communal kitchen for working on your arepa-making skills (it's a local type of bread). You can make a Colombian coffee for free if you need a quick pick-me-up, or get a beer from our bar if you fancy something stronger. Chocolate-related emergency? Snacks are available 24 hours a day from the vending machines!

Location

Colourful Cartagena is a treat for the eyes (and your Instagram), and you'll be staying in one of its prettiest streets. We're in the hip Getsemani Old Town neighbourhood right by the bay – wander down there to check out the sunset – and a 5-minute walk from the historic clock tower. The Gold Museum is 9 minutes away on foot for an intro to some of Colombia's history. Coming to the hostel from the airport? Rafael Núñez International's a quarter of an hour's drive away.

Rooms and Dorms

Bunks in mixed or female-only dorms have lamps, plug sockets and linen included, all with shared bathrooms. We've got some private rooms with en-suites (great if you like to take your time getting ready) and sea views. You'll have a locker in your dorm, too.

Extras and activities

Our traditional hacienda-style casa has plenty of sociable common areas both indoors and outdoors. There's cable TV if you want to catch a show – or practise your Spanish by watching a Colombian soap opera! Pick up a free city map to get you out and about. And our staff are on hand for questions if you want some local tips. You can also have a go on the pool and foosball tables, or make the most of the free Wi-Fi to Skype family back home.

Well located in getsemani, close to busy streets full of restaurants and bars. Nice view from balconies. Overall good stay.

The amenities are great, and the breakfast was very delicious. Nancy at the front desk is delightful. I wish the bar did not blast the music so loud, it definitely deterred many people from socializing in that area, and from eating breakfast there. Beer pong night was fun, but I think they can do a better job to create a more social atmosphere. Overall, good place to stay for 2-3nights, but not the best if you want to socialize with others.

I stayed at El Arsenal for 5 nights and thought it was great. The pool area was a big selling feature. It was in a beautiful courtyard and was a great place to sit, cool off from the hot Cartagenian sun and to meet people. The graffiti art in the bar added to the atmosphere. The free breakfast was basic, but handy to have. The dorm beds all had one plug in and a light. Overall, I would stay there again!

Don't book 4 bed dorm, tiny tiny rooms! We moved to a spacious 8 bed which was great. Bar and pool area can be loud, pool is small and not many seats. There's seats upstairs but not enough space to relax overall. Amazing breakfast. They partner with pizza picos and recommend it, we went there but had bad experience. 45 minutes waiting for margarita which we cancelled, the manager said they went to shops on other side of town to buy tomatoes which is why it took so long ...lol

Great location, fantastic staff and a good free breakfast. However anyone can walk in through the bar and you have to specifically ask for a room key. I met some great people but it wasn’t the most sociable.

Breakfast was great and kitchen well-equipped. Not much atmosphere but wanted somewhere more chilled out - however beds weren’t very clean, sheets stained and lots of hair in the beds which made us uncomfortable.

    Very Good

I thought it was a really big disadvantage that the doors of the rooms couldn’t be locked. This meant that everyone could basically just walk in if they wanted to. Pros: the breakfast was good and the pool was nice. Atmosphere was a bit party-ish but alright.

Do not book the 4 person room. My friend and I arrived and 2 people were there already and it wasn’t possible for us to all fit in the room with the bags in. The staff said she couldn’t do anything about it and didn’t even offer us an apology or try to rectify the problem and said they were full so we ended up moving hostel and losing our deposit. It was a shame as it looked like a nice hostel with a good vibe but the staff and room size ruined it for us.

They turn off the AC during the day. At night they turn it to 24 and turn on the fans. Way too hot. I asked the reception if she could turn it on during the day because I wanted to take a nap and except the heat and she refused. Don’t advertise AC if your not going to use it.
