You must stay here if you’re passing through Otavalo! While the location seems far away, on the map above, the market and city are a quick/clean ¢.30 bus ride away. The town of Illuman is beautiful and there is always street food and events going on in the main square. The Imbabura Volcano towers over the city and the Peguche Waterfall is close. The owner and his family are very kind, and we fell in love with their German Shepard’s Max and Crystal! The rooms are cozy, clean, and tranquil!

This is such a wonderful little family farm. It's so beautiful and the hosts do a great job of making everybody feel welcome and a part of the family! and its so easy to get to both Iluman and Otavalo!

A unique hostel on a Quechua family farm, really peaceful place away from touristy Otavalo. Easy to get to (30 cent buses run every few mins from Otavalo to Iluman). Tio and his family were very friendly and welcoming. Only compliant, there was no soap in one of the toilets and the bathroom wasn’t the cleanest. Other than that, a great place to stay.

This hostel is perfect if you want a relaxed place in a slightly remote setting. The hostel is located about 10min walk from the centre of Iluman village, it’s got great views of the surrounding volcanoes. They grow lots of organic produce and you can use certain leaves from the plants to make tea which is really nice. ‘Tio’ who runs the place is really lovely, great to chat to and he is really passionate about his project. Kitchen is a little small but good to have for cooking.

The hostel is not directly in the city of Iluman as it shows on the map, however it is a short walk away on the owners farm and well worth it. It's very tranquil, has a shared kitchen and bathrooms, the beds are great, and it's very relaxed. It has more of a rustic feel with farm animals around, dogs, cats, and more. Wifi is only in the reception area in town which is nice because people hang out at the hostel instead of staring at devices. I would definitely return.

    Fabulous

We were very pleased overall with our stay at El Tio Hostal. It is an excellent value for the price, in a very beautiful location, and great for staying a little bit away from the hustle and bustle of the city of Otavalo. The hostal office is located close to the central plaza in the town of Iluman, which is a very quick bus ride from Otavalo. Buses come and go from Otavalo frequently. The facilities are pretty good, but it is a family run organization so adjust expectations accordingly

    Good

It is a nice place to stay for some days in tranquility and nature. The owner and his family are very friendly and open, helping with any issue and let you participate in their cultural activities. However, it is a very basic service they offer. There is just one shower which has hot water just if it is more dropping than flowing. The kitchen is very untidy and small, so usually in the morning and evening always crowded. There is NO Wifi (other than stated) just at the reception (15min walk).

Rather misleadingly, this hostel lists itself as being close to Otavalo. It’s actually 7 miles away and from there requires a 5 minute drive from a concrete structure that looks like a regular tienda which they call “reception”. That’s where the internet is — I don’t mind a remote finca, but they should be honest that there is no internet outside of a dark musky room in the back of a liquor store and that it’s much further than claimed. Location: wrong. Facilities: wrong. Staff was indifferent.
