Property Description

Welcome travellers :-)

Room categories are as follows (facilities, activities, breakfast and EVENING DINNER are included in the rates):
PRIVATE SINGLE = PARK YOUR VAN in one of our parking spots
Private Double Bed = Private room with a double bed
Private Double Bed = Cozy caravan with a double bed
2 Standard dorm rooms with 4 resp. 5 beds

We are a vibrant, diverse and friendly travellers' community running a sustainable homestead with organic gardens, cats and chickens. The heart of our community is an old farm house in which we would like our visitors to feel home away from home.

Each day we share a big veggie dinner together, which is included in the rates, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to meet everyone. Some nights we light a campfire which we share stories, experiences, great conversations and music around. Sundays are usually Pizza nights. We have a library full of different books and frequently watch movies together. Our intention is to cultivate a peaceful environment with a focus on learning and sharing.

We run workshops and skill sharing sessions, such as bread baking, upcycling, crafting and organic gardening. You are welcome to join our workshops and learn, or offer one yourself if you have a skill you would like to share with others.

Following the concept ”Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, we use compost showers, an outdoor fire bath, compost and recycling systems and a bicycle-powered washing machine.

Whether you want to make treats, do yoga, read or relax, the open green space and cozy living areas lend themselves to all kinds of needs and projects.
We are located off the beaten track and a little outside the city centre, but still easily accessible by train.

We look forward to seeing you!! :-) View House Rules

As soon as you step foot onto the property, you can feel this place has a heart and soul. The communal vibe and community energy is something so rarely found. This place feels like home, there's creativity in ever corner and a relaxed familiar vibe. It really felt like coming home. Everyone is so welcoming, laid back and just flowing with life. Also so appreciative of the vegan dinners and breakfasts every day, as well as the environmentally conscious and up cycled amenities. Much love 🌻✨

Hidden gem in Auckland. This space has a spirit of warmth, openness and connection. Be ready to experience a beautiful socialist experiment :)

Among cats, trees and train tracks I have discovered a home in the big city. A community of travellers who truly live in a connecting way with a simple but effective framework. Sharing meals, experiences and life happens daily in a natural flow. The five nights at Fat Cat Backpackers fulfilled my need for connection, community, fun, adventure and simplicity. Basically, I have found my anchor in the big smoke of Auckland.

I quarantined at FatCat for level 3/4 and couldn’t think of a better hostel to have done it in. It’s like a family and a home. It was so different to any other hostel I’ve stayed in, even when I returned a while later in my trip everyone is so much more friendly and welcoming than any other hostel. The shared dinners and breakfasts give a real community feel. It might not be the most modern or sparkling places but it’s about the people.

Pros: - Friendly, chilled people - Two tasty and nutritious free vegetarian meals a day - A good bed in the private room with a nice firm mattress and good bedding - Off the beaten track but still easily accessible from Auckland CBD - Feels safe, not a big drinking/party hostel, more 'green' Cons: - Crowded and chaotic - Kind of dusty and run-down - Thin walls and lots of noise from 7am to 1am, hard to get a good night's sleep if you need more than 6 hours

This is a very unusual backpackers! More like a massive group house, really. The amount of 'stuff' was a bit overwhelming at first, and because there are so many things it's a somewhat dusty environment. The culture is delightful, though - such a lovely social group who come together for an evening meal. Long-term residents will probably get more from this place than folks staying one or two nights.

Folk are very friendly here, the atmosphere is like a backpackers community which is fine, but I gather the owners live overseas now and the building is pretty run down and not very clean. The volunteers who clean it in return for free board do their best,, but people seem to leave it in a mess. If you want a cheap friendly place to stay it's OK but be warned its run down and not clean
