Hostels in Guwahati

🇮🇳 Hostels in India: one country, a hundred trips in one

India isn't a place you tick off — it's one you sink into. Snow-topped Himalayas in the north, palaces and desert in Rajasthan, beaches and full-moon parties in Goa, and a spiritual pull along the Ganges that's hard to explain until you're there. It's loud, intense and endlessly rewarding, and the hostel scene has grown up fast to match — social, well-run and full of travellers figuring it out together. Compare 16 hostels in Guwahati on Hostelworld, all backed by real traveller reviews to help you book the right bed in 2026.

🤝 Where you'll meet people

India can feel overwhelming on day one, which is exactly why the hostels here are so social — everyone's swapping train tips, comparing routes and teaming up for the next leg. Rooftop chai, communal dinners, cooking classes and group tours to forts and ghats make it easy to fall in with people fast, whether you're 19 on a gap year or 45 and travelling long-term.

If you like plans before you land, the Hostelworld app adds a nice head start: book a bed and you're dropped into that hostel's in-app chat, plus nearby Linkups — free meet-ups where solo travellers find their crowd in a new city. Solo, but never on your own.

📍 Where to stay in India

India is huge, so most travellers pick a region and go deep. Good places to base yourself:

🛺 Delhi — the main arrival point and gateway to the north, with train links across the country.

🕌 Agra — home of the Taj Mahal, and an easy stop between Delhi and Rajasthan.

🏰 Jaipur — the Pink City, forts and bazaars, and the classic intro to Rajasthan.

🌅 Udaipur — lakes, palaces and rooftop sunsets; the prettiest city in the region.

🏖️ Goa — beaches, nightlife and India's most social, party-friendly hostel scene.

🧘 Rishikesh — yoga capital on the Ganges, plus white-water rafting and Himalayan treks.

🪔 Varanasi — the spiritual heart of the country, intense and unforgettable on the riverside ghats.

Most travellers start in Delhi, do the Golden Triangle, then head deeper into Rajasthan, north to the mountains, or south to Goa.

🛏️ What are hostels like in India?

Hostels in Guwahati usually mix shared dorms, private rooms, rooftop cafes and communal spaces built for meeting people. Many are run by Indian hostel brands that have set the standard for the region — think clean dorms, travel desks that book your onward trains and tours, and rooftops for yoga, chai or sunset beers. Air-con and female-only dorms are widely available, which matters in the heat and for solo women travellers.

Standards vary more than in Europe or Southeast Asia, so this is one place where reading recent reviews really pays off — the atmosphere rating and latest comments tell you how clean, safe and social a place actually is right now.

🎒 Is India good for solo travellers?

India is one of the most rewarding countries in the world to travel solo — and one where a good hostel makes all the difference. The social scene means you're rarely alone unless you want to be, and travel desks, group tours and hostel-arranged transport take a lot of the stress out of a big, busy country.

Solo women travellers should look for hostels with female-only dorms, high safety and atmosphere ratings, and plenty of recent reviews from other women. Those 115 reviews in Guwahati are the honest word-of-mouth that tells you which places genuinely feel safe, clean and easy to meet people in.

✅ How to choose a hostel in India

Start with the city and neighbourhood, then compare price, review score, atmosphere and safety — and check how close you are to the train station or old town. A few pointers:

Dorms are the cheapest option and usually the most social.

Female-only dorms are widely available and worth filtering for if you want them.

Private rooms cost more but keep the shared rooftops and common areas.

Read recent reviews, not just the score — in India they're the fastest way to check cleanliness, safety and vibe right now.

🌏 Backpacker routes through India

India rewards a bit of planning, and a few routes come up again and again:

The Golden Triangle — Delhi → Agra → Jaipur, the classic first loop.

Rajasthan — extend from Jaipur to Udaipur, Jodhpur and the desert.

The north — Delhi → Rishikesh → the Himalayas for yoga, trekking and cooler air.

The south — fly or train down to Goa's beaches, then on to Kerala.

Cross-border — many travellers continue north into Nepal.

Trains connect most of it, but they book up early. Line up your first nights here, then book each stop along the route as your plans firm up.

📅 When to book hostels in India

The best months are October to March, when it's cooler and dry across most of the country — that's also when hostels fill fastest, especially around Diwali, Holi and Christmas–New Year in Goa. The Himalayas are better in summer, when the plains are too hot. Whenever you're going, book early in 2026 for a better choice of location, dorm type and private rooms.
