Overview

Welcome to the heart of Austin, where you'll find the friendly Firehouse Hostel. There's a story behind our name: our building was the longest-standing fire station in Austin, originally built in 1885. Cool right? Even cooler, since opening in 2013, we've become the largest hostel in the whole of Texas. Our attached Firehouse Lounge is a great place to meet people, sip on handcrafted cocktails or locally brewed beers, and enjoy live music. And the morning after, we'll make sure you're treated to a wholesome free breakfast.

Location

Coming here from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport? Get MetroAirport bus 20 for just over a dollar. After about 40 minutes, you'll need to get off at Lavaca and 8th Street, and then we're an 8-minute walk from there. Easy! Once you're here, you'll be within walking distance of Austin's lively centre. We're just around the corner from historic 6th Street, known for its nightlife and music scene. If you're here for sightseeing, it'll take you just over 10 minutes to walk to the Texas State Capitol building or the Colorado River.

Rooms and Dorms

There's plenty to choose from: go for a mixed or female-only economy dorm or upgrade to a deluxe or a private room for some alone-time. The deluxe dorms have custom-made bunks with built-in lockers, and each bed has power outlets and a reading light. Whatever you choose, towels and bed linen are free, plus we'll give you not one but two pillows! All our rooms have air con and are accessible via elevator.

Extras and activities

If you haven't made any evening plans, withdraw some cash from our on-site ATM, then head through the hidden bookshelf in our lobby to discover our speakeasy-style cocktail bar. Alternatively, pop into our common room to make some new friends... then head to our kitchen areas to impress them with your cooking skills. Swing by reception – our staff are there 24/7 – to get friendly Texan-style tips on the best of Austin, and pick up a free map.

I had a fantastic experience with Firehouse Hostel. I hate sharing rooms but the staff was friendly, the facilities were clean and comfortable, and the dorms were not as bad as expected. People visiting were also courteous so I had a great experience.

It was such a peaceful place to rest and study when I was off of work. I had the whole place to myself and I enjoyed that. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It is right next door to 6th street so food is readily available. There was a bit of noise outside (since 6th street is the most popular places in Austin. If you are a light sleeper just make note of that. It did not bother me too much. I would definitely go again. I recommend it to any travelers. Joe

Fantastic hostel with great facilities! The staff are friendly and helpful. Joe, Jared and Mark really made my stay with their going-beyond attitudes, thanks! Great location downtown, between the Capitol, 6th Street and the Bridge which made exploring and going out really easy. There's a speakeasy hidden downstairs which has a great atmosphere for meeting travellers and locals alike. They also give you a guest discount. A great place to start your evenings in a great city!

The hostel was great, close to everything, but there's also a bar right there in case you don't want to head out. Rooms were nice and clean and so were the bathrooms. Jarred at the reception was so incredibly helpful, he had great suggestions and knowledge of the area, as well as helping us out with a pharmacy when I was ill, parking and anything we threw at him.

Fantastic location, clean rooms and facilities, great bar downstairs! Staff were friendly (except for one guy who I think was maybe having a bad day!) and overall one of the better hostels I've stayed in. Would recommend and stay again!

Firehouse wasn’t that bad. Welcoming and warming. It’s just a bummer that it wasn’t booming with festivities like most amazing hostels do because of the pandemic. Nonetheless, my stay was comforting and quiet! Very good location as well. I’d recommend.

Great location next to 6th street, and short scooter ride to Rainey St and Zilker Park Atmosphere was somewhat slow (less than 50% capacity) but TX is still ramping back up after COVID. I’m sure this place normally rocks. Met some great people anyway... The rooms are good. Cleaning happened daily in common areas. The only place to hang out is the small kitchen, but most of us were outside the hostel most of the time anyway. Overall recommend for a stay in Austin!
