We love this Hostel!

It gets our thumbs up for consistently high guest reviews.

Hostelworld says

Flying Pig Uptown is located near Leidseplein, the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, and is also next to the large Vondelpark, a popular relaxation spot. We like that this hostel has a bar and smoking area downstairs and is 'very close to bars and the tram stop', according to our guests. Several visitors have also told us they appreciate the homey atmosphere, which feels 'more like hanging out in a friend's house than a hostel'.

Property Description

As the original Flying Pig hostel, we can't wait to welcome you again!

We're located perfectly central in-between the museum and fashion district, the Vondelpark and Leidseplein, where the best concert-halls, clubs, bars and coffee shops are and most locals go out. You'll get that real Amsterdam feel and are still close enough to the red light district, which is only a 25-minute walk.

The Pig has been world-famous for its laid back atmosphere, with a hostel bar that everyone keeps talking about and friendly, helpful staff. We have a guest kitchen and an indoor smoking area where you'll meet plenty of fellow travelers. This lively bar has regular event nights, the cheapest beer in town and daily drinks specials!

Almost every bed in our dorms has a reading light, (including both our single and queen-size bunk beds) and free individual lockers in the rooms (bring your own padlock or buy one at reception for €3.50.

The Flying Pig Uptown provides free linen, free use of our reception safe for small valuables, free Wi-Fi, a book exchange and munchy food for sale! There is also a continental style breakfast available every morning for €4.

This spring and summer you can enjoy Amsterdam's famous green grass in the beautiful Vondelpark, right outside the Flying Pig Uptown. Enjoy some drinks, smokes, or have a picnic. You can also check out the free musical and cultural performances on the park stage or play games with your (new) friends out on the open grassy areas.

If you're in for some culture, the Van Gogh, Stedelijk and Rijksmuseum (with the 'Nachtwacht') are just around the corner, same as the beautiful Concert Building. Do you want to explore the Red Light District, some historic sites or Chinatown? Just take a stroll - everything is within walking distance. Public transport is close by, too.

But there's always more: go shopping at one of the local markets (such as the Albert Cuijp in the Pijp area) or the 'Nine Little Streets', drink a beer at the Amsterdam Heineken Museum or have a wild night out in the so-called pop temple the Paradiso, within crawling-home distance.

We're open 24 hours with night security and no curfews or lockout. Access is by keycard.

Please note that the Flying Pig has an age restriction; we welcome guests from above 18 to the eternal young at heart! We do not accommodate anyone under the age of 18 years. A form of Photo Identification is required upon check in. Accepted forms are a valid passport or national ID card. Driving licences are NOT accepted.

We also want to inform you that we have a hostel cat, Lola, who is allowed in the bar area of the hostel but who we do not allow in the rooms. We don't have a lift in our building and quite some stairs so if you things this would be a problem for you, please contact us before you book!

Please read our Things To Note below. We only accept groups of up to 10 people through Hostelworld. View House Rules

Sick hostel to stay at, beds were comfy and clean but you never spent a lot of time in them. Atmosphere is good especially in the smoke room

Overall a nice hostel - very comfortable rooms. Loads of stairs and a bit of a maze initially but you get used to it! Lots of toilets and showers of varying standards. A lovely location opposite a park and right next to all the main museums. 20 min walk away from the centre which was perfect for me. Pricey enough but you’d be hard pushed to find somewhere better in Amsterdam I think.

Very good hostel- not a long way from the centre and the walk there is lovely either way. Toilets and showers were always clean and the hostel staff were very helpful and accommodating.

Nice hostel a little bit outside of the Centre of Amsterdam. If you want to just party I would suggest something more central but if you want to relax this is the place to be. Beds are really comfortable. Lockers under the bed are huge and there are enough showers and toilets. Nothing to complain

Hostel is great and at good vicinity of tourist locatiots. Me and my fiance were alloted the top rooms in the building and it was very tough time climbing to the 4th floor. If anything is needed to inform at reception one needs to come all the down. My suggestion : Please provide a intercom communication to the reception on last floors such that one can communicate and need not come all the way down. :)

    Very Good

Overall the hostel was fine, a bit overpriced for the value in my opinion. My room was incredibly hot even though every night it was very nice and cool outside. The room window barely opened and someone in the room kept turning the fan off. I guess that just the price you pay when staying in a hostel.

Truly an average place. The paid staff was nice, they helped me with my luggage a couple of times and always willing to help out. Whoever was cleaning the rooms was not so nice and also wasnt great at cleaning. Bathrooms were small, usually clean and so were showers. Atmosphere was just not my vibe. I looove partying but people here only smoked and kinda called it a night. I didn’t see a single event held by the hostel the time I was there and happy hour was nice but not a community event at all

This hostel felt like a franchise. Charge for everything and no sense of community. Staff was friendly but uninterested in sharing knowledge about Dutch culture and Amsterdam. I don’t think any Dutch people work here. Rooms/facilities were small and almost laughable. As compact as possible. Way more expensive than many nice hostels I’ve stayed in. It’s a hostel for 21 year-olds that are excited to smoke weed... (I’m 27 and felt very old here).

Flying Pig Uptown says

I think that one of the best things about this hostel is our smoking area, because let's be honest....a lot of people come to Amsterdam to smoke! But if you don't like to smoke you can also have a great time at our hostel. We have a bar and we're really close to the famous Vondelpark, Leidseplein (the entertainment area), Museumplein (Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum) - so if you want to go out and shop, eat, drink, visit museums or find a coffee shop, everything is just around the corner. Personally I recommend that visitors go for a stroll around the 'Nine Little Streets', called '9 Straatjes' in Dutch; they're great for shopping, food and drinks and nice views over the canals.
For fun we have daily free walking tours and pub crawls as well as great drink specials all day, every day. Our main age group is young travellers who like to meet new people and party, chill or do both!
