Property Description

The dock by the water slowly fills with people doing their morning wake up routine, while coffee and breakfast with toast, jam and a wide range of fruits, waiting for the hungry travelers. Now the day can begin with a swim in the crystal clear water of the lagoon, or go for a tour to the best spots on the lake of seven colors by paddle-board.

While relaxing in one of the hammocks you can see where the lagoon got it's name. You also see the entrance to the pirate's channel, marked by an abandoned bar in the shape of a ship. As you go down by the pirate channel you will see mangroves along the edge as you float with the gentle current. When you return you can visit the old ruins used to defend from pirates. You can go for a 5 minute walk to the black cenote.
Wade out a few meters and look down into the abyss, then jump into it from fallen tree. Once you're hungry it's a quick to the plaza where you will find small locally owned stores to buy groceries for cooking or try the local cuisine. At the end of the day having BBQ with your fellow traveler. The hammocks and gazebos are great places to meet your neighbors in tents or dorms and make new friends.

After dark you can watch the stars with your new family and fall asleep in your tent as you watch the sky through the mesh. Or try a comfy bed in either a 5 or 4 bed dorm. Or a 4 person private room. With such an inspiring place you might find a forgotten love for writing, drawing, singing or meditation on the dock, while listening to the waves. Let the Green Monkey hostel inspire you, let yourself go.

Also with us you can book PADDLE BOARD tours, to visit the Bacalar lagoon and see the sunrise, Los Rápidos in Bacalar. We also make archaeological visits to the ruins of Dzibanche, Kinichná and Oxtankah. Visits to the beach of Xcalak, paddle in Xul-Ha.
You can book those tours when you arrive at the hostel, make a bank transfer or a previous deposit and save your place!

Great hostel with perfect surroundings! My only complaint is it’s quite noisy every morning as they operate sunrise tours from right outside the rooms. Not a problem if you’re involved though!

I stayed a night in a priviate room. Didn’t get bedbugs. Staff was nice. Breakfast was full of flies so I didn’t have that. That was just a bonus so I can’t fault the hostel on that.

Good spot right in town and with lake access. Breakfast has lots of fresh fruit. Only thing to improve is putting lockers in the cabins.

    Fabulous

Very nice place to stay, crazy view on the lake. Nice sunrise. 20 min walking distance from ado station. I would recommend to book a private Bungalow instead of dorms (I have got bitten by many bugs) which are cleaner and more quiet and comfy. Staff are really nice and helpful however the owner is non tolerant and does not have the spirit of backpacker’s hostel. Despite of this, I would recommend you to stay, it’s worth it !!

    Good

We only stayed here for one night and I would say this hostel is good for short stays. The major upside is the outside area near the pier, which was spacious and had large beach chairs for use. However, the facilities were very average with a freezing cold shower and our room smelt awful. Not a horrible stay but nothing special.

Bugs! Past reviews speak of bed bugs, I wouldnt have stayed if I'd known before hand as I'm very susceptible to getting bit. I didnt see them myself but I definitely got bit 5-6 times that night so I had to move the next day and clean everything in my bags. Also the bathroom smelled awful and the room smelled musty and strongly of cleaning supplies at the same time. They may have sprayed chemicals for the bugs and it's not safe to sleep there. Mattresses were plastic wrapped. Stay away.

The room smelled like a fresh dump was taken on the floor. The beds were covered in plastic wrap which encourages the idea that the place had bed bugs recently and my roommates in the dorm got robbed. However the staff was very helpful in rembursing the roommates. I also very much enjoyed the SUP sunrise experience with Mario and the other dudes! As well as my kayak rental. Breakfast was nice too. Thanks for the stay and hopefully you can address some of these issues

This hostel is really awful. It’s totally overpriced for what it is. Which is a really dirty, bed bug ridden horrible place to stay. We got there and our room smelled so badly of sewage. We were then moved into a double room which had not been cleaned and when we got into bed we saw bed bugs climbed up the walls and were also on our pillows and in our hair. We told them the next day and they wouldn’t give us our money back. Also two people were robbed whilst we were there. AVOID.

I sayed 2 nights there. When i arrived they didn't have a key of my room so i had to wait to my roommates to enter to the room. The first night one girl in my room had fleas on her bed. The next day i change my room and that afternoon some one stole money from our bags and some guys left their things on the lockers and there were broken so someone alse stole them from the lockers. Is the worst place i've ever been
