Property Description

The dock by the water slowly fills with people doing their morning wake up routine, while coffee and breakfast with toast, jam and a wide range of fruits, waiting for the hungry travelers. Now the day can begin with a swim in the crystal clear water of the lagoon, or go for a tour to the best spots on the lake of seven colors by paddle-board.

While relaxing in one of the hammocks you can see where the lagoon got it's name. You also see the entrance to the pirate's channel, marked by an abandoned bar in the shape of a ship. As you go down by the pirate channel you will see mangroves along the edge as you float with the gentle current. When you return you can visit the old ruins used to defend from pirates. You can go for a 5 minute walk to the black cenote.
Wade out a few meters and look down into the abyss, then jump into it from fallen tree. Once you're hungry it's a quick to the plaza where you will find small locally owned stores to buy groceries for cooking or try the local cuisine. At the end of the day having BBQ with your fellow traveler. The hammocks and gazebos are great places to meet your neighbors in tents or dorms and make new friends.

After dark you can watch the stars with your new family and fall asleep in your tent as you watch the sky through the mesh. Or try a comfy bed in either a 5 or 4 bed dorm. Or a 4 person private room. With such an inspiring place you might find a forgotten love for writing, drawing, singing or meditation on the dock, while listening to the waves. Let the Green Monkey hostel inspire you, let yourself go.

Also with us you can book PADDLE BOARD tours, to visit the Bacalar lagoon and see the sunrise, Los Rápidos in Bacalar. We also make archaeological visits to the ruins of Dzibanche, Kinichná and Oxtankah. Visits to the beach of Xcalak, paddle in Xul-Ha.
You can book those tours when you arrive at the hostel, make a bank transfer or a previous deposit and save your place!

Here at Green Monkey Bacalar, we've perfected laid-back, lagoon-side living. We look out across the water but we're also close to bars, clubs and restaurants in the town. With a free breakfast laid on every morning (including tropical fruit, of course) you'll be set for a day of active exploring or lazy lounging in a hammock. Hang out by our barbecue and get to know other travellers over a burger and beer (or a tequila!). If you're keen to try paddle boarding and you love a bright early morning we can sort you out with a sunrise tour of the lagoon.

From Corozal Airport it takes about an hour to reach us by taxi. We're a 10-minute walk from the local supermarket if you want to stock up on drinks and snacks and there are loads of Mexican restaurants a short stroll away. The famous El Canal de Los Piratas is just across the lagoon, and we can take you on a trip to the nearby rapids, too. Find out about the local wildlife with a day at Bird Island bird sanctuary – a 25-minute walk from the hostel.

Rooms and Dorms

You can crash out in a mixed dorm or share a private room with your mates – most rooms are en-suite. We'll provide fresh linen to lighten the load in your backpack. Mexican summers can get sticky, so we've got air con to keep you cool while you sleep. Your gear will fit neatly into one of our lockers. Need a towel? They're ready to hire at reception.

Extras and activities

With our free Wi-Fi, you can update your social media with envy-inducing photos and catch up on the latest news from home. Stay on top of your budget (and try your hand at some Mexican dishes) in our guest kitchen. To help you discover the best bits of the local area, we've got a tour desk and friendly staff who can arrange trips to beaches and ruins nearby.

A respectful and local place where everyone is friendly - only planned to stay two nights but extended on location. Takes me 15 seconds from my bed into the water. Unbeatable. Renting a kayak here is highly recommended, too!

Great hostel with perfect surroundings! My only complaint is it’s quite noisy every morning as they operate sunrise tours from right outside the rooms. Not a problem if you’re involved though!

Mediocre dorms; expensive for what you get (overall) relative to other places in Mexico but I guess reasonable for Bacalar. There is no real common area and not much has been done to make this place feel vibrant and fun, but you are on the water. International volunteer staff is super friendly and cool, actually they are probably the best and most memorable part of my stay at Green Monkey :).

We only stayed here for one night and I would say this hostel is good for short stays. The major upside is the outside area near the pier, which was spacious and had large beach chairs for use. However, the facilities were very average with a freezing cold shower and our room smelt awful. Not a horrible stay but nothing special.

The room smelled like a fresh dump was taken on the floor. The beds were covered in plastic wrap which encourages the idea that the place had bed bugs recently and my roommates in the dorm got robbed. However the staff was very helpful in rembursing the roommates. I also very much enjoyed the SUP sunrise experience with Mario and the other dudes! As well as my kayak rental. Breakfast was nice too. Thanks for the stay and hopefully you can address some of these issues

Had a very weird vibe. I think it was a quiet time, but the staff were unwilling to help with my minimal spanish, no guests were talking to each other, private room was pretty dusty. Bar area closed, looked abandoned. Bit of a downer on bacalar in general, sadly.

Overall I felt that we were slightly short-changed. We were promised a lockbox and expected aircon. However upon arrival we found that our private room was right next to the road offering minimum security. Upon arrival, the staff members spoke minimum English (a sensitive point as it is arguable that they shouldn’t need to in their own Spanish speaking country) which made it difficult to check in. We were told that The Yak Lake House was the place to stay and we could not agree more.

Staff is not nice at all. Didn’t want to help me get a taxi in the morning. The bathroom are really dirty and uncomfortable. Wasn’t worth the money. Wouldn’t go there again

I sayed 2 nights there. When i arrived they didn't have a key of my room so i had to wait to my roommates to enter to the room. The first night one girl in my room had fleas on her bed. The next day i change my room and that afternoon some one stole money from our bags and some guys left their things on the lockers and there were broken so someone alse stole them from the lockers. Is the worst place i've ever been
