The origin of the name.
Our guest house name 'Rengishi' is derived from one of the Kabuki play.

A shishi is a mythological lion-like animal said to be the king of beasts. Renjishi describes a lions harsh way of raising a cub, in which a parent pushes the cubs into the bottom of a ravine and only those which manage to climb back up are raised.

With a spirit of the cub, which overcomes many difficulties to live, we are putting great effort to offering an opportunity to know about good old days of Kyoto for more people.

We are looking forward to seeing you at 'Renjishi'. View House Rules

The owner of this hostel is the kindest and most generous person I met during my entire two week trip to Japan. He greeted me outside upon arrival and showed me everything I needed to know about the guesthouse. He was very helpful with information and was always cheerful and friendly. We drank together and enjoyed conversation even though there was a language barrier, we used technology to make it work. The house itself is a two part traditional home and very beautiful. Close to a lot.

Our stay at this guesthouse was awesome. Our host was so sweet and caring, always open to offer his help. We really loved the room as it was in a lovely ancient building and beds were so comfortable. We absolutely loved the place itself as well as its helpful owner. Thank you Kabuki Guesthouse, we totally recommend!

The shower was inconveniently on the opposite side of the house, but I think this only applied to the dorm I stayed in. The house was a little far from downtown but there were bus stops nearby and Kyoto station was only a 20 min walk away. The host was extremely welcoming and made an effort to speak to us in English. This quaint hostel gave me an idea of what living like a local in Kyoto would be like, and I would honestly love to stay here again!

Found this small guesthouse in Kyoto, Was looking for tatami experience and was not disappointed! You are waken by the monks in the temple next door, great to start the day in a spiritual way! Owner was lovely, gave us tips and tricks around the city

    Fabulous

The owner is the main reason why this guesthouse is so great; he's so nice and attentive. From the moment we arrived, he worked hard to make our stay in Kyoto memorable; he drew a map and gave such helpful tips. The guesthouse and neighborhood are also super cute and traditional, as well as peaceful, which provided for great sleep. The one suggestion I have is for the bunk bed to be removed from the private tatami mat room; it took up so much room, and I was expecting futons on the floor.

Very nice authentic place. The owner has put a lot of effort into providing information and is very nice. Kyoto started charging lodging tax, and the owner will ask for this tax to be paid in cash.
